Verb Tenses
Monday – Present Tense
The tense of a verb tells when an action takes place.
A verb in the present tense tells what is happening
now or on a regular basis.
Ann sits down as her mother sets the table.
Jade runs to the net for the winning shot.
(what is happening now)
Selena often runs to the net.
(a regular action)
To form present-tense singular regular verbs in the
third person, add –s.
The dog lies down.
The cat lays its paws on my lap.
Add –es to regular verbs that end in s, ss, ch, sh, x,
or zz.
She rises early to go to work.
He raises his hand.
The car passes the school.
He catches the ball.
She washes dishes.
He waxes the floor.
She buzzes the doorbell.
If a verb ends with a consonant and the letter y,
change y to i before adding –es.
Dad worries. Mom carries.
Monday Practice
Use the simple present tense of the verb to complete these
sentences.
Make sure that the subjects and verbs are in agreement.
1. (write) He sometimes ______ his stories in a
notebook.
2. (write) This pen ______ in green ink.
3. (write) You ______ with your left hand, right?
4. (write) We always ______ our names on our
backpacks.
5. (write) They never ______ down the area code.

Tuesday
A verb in the past tense tells about an action that
took place in the past.
Add –ed to most verbs to show past tense: walked.
If a verb ends in e, drop the e before adding –ed:
raised.
If a verb ends in one vowel and one consonant,
double the consonant before adding –ed: petted.
If it ends in a consonant and y, change y to i before
adding –ed: tried.
A verb in the future tense tells about a future action
and is formed with the helping verb will: will lie, will
lay, will sit, will set, will rise, will raise.
Tuesday Practice
Use the simple past tense of these regular verbs.
1. (wash) I my hair last night.
2. (turn) Who off the light?
3. (pull) He a muscle in gym class.
4. (smile) They at me in class.
Use the simple past tense for these irregular verbs.
1. (find) The police his stolen bike after your phone
call.
2. (hit) She three home runs in yesterday’s game.

4. (sink) The battleship in just 30 minutes.
Wednesday
Capitalization and Punctuation in Poetry
Quotation marks appear around titles of short
poems. A line of poetry may “break” a sentence into
two or more lines.
Many lines of poetry end with a comma. The
commas tell when the reader should pause.
Periods mark the end of a complete thought.
In many poems each new line begins with a capital
letter.
Wednesday Practice
Use the future tense of the verb.
1. (write) We a list of instructions for you before we
leave.

tomorrow.
Use the simple past or the future tense of the verb.
1. (share) They their water until we get the pump fixed.

hill in town.
Thursday
Correct the punctuation and verb tense in the following
sentences.
1. The dogs laid down to sleep.
2. Bill set down and said, “Sit this glass ehre on the
table”
3. I rised my hand and rush to give the answer!

Thursday Practice
Name the verb. Then identify whether the sentence is in the
past tense, simple present tense, or future tense.
1. The mayor postponed the meeting until next week.

3. Too much pollution hurts the environment.

Common.
6. Jennifer and I will practice all day tomorrow to get
