The lesson plans are flexible, and instructors/facilitators should encourage the students to be as active and involved in their learning as possible. For example, if students are working on the unit “What a Laugh!” (themes: comedy, jokes, cartoons, comic strips, riddles, etc.), students are encouraged to bring in items to read and share, including comics, joke books, etc.. This allows the students to take ownership of their learning. In addition, the pacing of any unit can be adjusted to suit student interest levels, or specific learning focuses. Independent and Buddy Reading Too Cool, Trackers/Trackers – Math, and High–Fliers are a variety of nonfiction and fiction books that supplement the core program. They link with the unit theme and extend the learning. Allow students to access these books easily and without disruption. They should be available before the after school program begins (as the students are transitioning from room to room) and after the core lesson is completed. Take–Home Reading High–Fliers fiction and nonfiction texts link with the unit theme, and give the students opportunities to read more extensively at home. 1 During each day’s session, students complete the designated Literacy Power activity. 2 Each student chooses a title for Independent or Buddy Reading to read during rest of session. NOTE: A student may choose to read the same title over several days. 3 Each student chooses a title for take-home reading. NOTE: A student may choose to read the same title over several days.
