Monday, January 9:
1. Read a “New Criticism” interpretation based on “Formalist” theory about “The Love Song of J. Alfred
Prufrock.” Rea page 881: background of T.S. Eliot.
2. Read the Wikipedia background first.
3. From my webpage, go to the link of the audio of the poem. The play button is on the right side of the
screen. Follow along in the text as the audio plays. Pause to clarify as needed.
4. Discussion questions:
A. Is Prufrock a bold or timid man? Justify your answer.
B. Some argue that Prufrock sees only negativity. Do you agree? Why or why not?
C. What demonstrates that Prufrock is unable to take action?
D. Explain why or why not you believe Prufrock is a tragic character.
5. Assign pages 966-969. Look for examples of how the criticism focuses on formalist theory. Refer to
pages 7-17.
6. Write one paragraph explaining what new insights you gained from the critic’s interpretation. You
also need to address HOW that interpretation relates to the definition of formalist criticism as you
understand it. Due Tuesday
Tuesday, January 10
1. Go to my webpage and access the audio of the poem, “One Art.” Have students open their books to
page 840-1 and follow along. They should listen to this poem twice. Have them write down what they
think the poem means.
2. Assign reading p992-5. This is the biographical interpretation of the poem. Determine how this
interpretation lends itself to a clearer understanding of the poem.
3. Review sociological and Marxist criticism p. 1613-4. Then assign: p. 1569-73. Write 2-3 paragraphs of
interpretation—does this author have a solid argument? What proof does the author provide? What
questions are left unanswered or what needed clarification or support? What do you understand now
about Marxist criticism that you didn’t before? Due Wednesday.
Wednesday, January 11
1. Begin working on the senior memory book. You can access the handouts for this unit on my
webpage. Upload writing to Turnitin by the end of class on Friday. Join their new Turnitin
classes. The new classes will be labeled as followed: English Comp 2-3 (2012) and English Comp

Title your paper with the name of the chapter you’re submitting. (Family, Friends, etc.)
2. Assign: p. 586-91—write 2 paragraphs of at least 8 sentences summarizing the main points of
Leslie Marmon Silko’s article “Language and Literature from a Pueblo Indian Perspective.”

1. Do quickwrite. What are the most important lessons life has taught you? It can be a secondhand experience that made you think, or it can be something you experienced directly. Come up
with at least 5 life lessons.

3. Read 334-5 and 340-1, again focusing on the lit analysis and reading strategy for each selection.
For Wednesday, read p. 336-8 and answer p. 339# 1-3 and any four questions from 4-10, and p.
342-4 and answer questions p. 345 #1-3 and any three questions from 4-8. (Due Wednesday)
4. Use the audio on Classzone and read along while listening.
