Coeliac WA 2015 – 2016 Annual Report
Since 1979, Coeliac WA has been active in enhancing the
quality of life for individuals requiring a gluten free diet in
Western Australia. This has been achieved through Coeliac WA
providing a single, credible source of information and being the
voice for people with coeliac disease.
Our Vision – To be the leader in promoting diagnosis, awareness and support
of people living with coeliac disease and dermatitis herpetiformis in Western
Australia.
Our Mission – To improve the quality of life of people living with coeliac
disease and to increase the diagnosis rate of coeliac disease in Western
Australia.
Our Values - Each of the five values and their associated behaviours guide our
personal and business conduct:
Respect - In all our activities we demonstrate respect for individual needs
Empowerment - We endeavour to empower our members to make informed
choices
Improvement - We constantly improve our services to members and build on
our strengths
Accountability - All funds are directed to improving the lives of people with
coeliac disease
Integrity - We act with integrity in all our dealings with members and the
broader community
Strategic Directions 2015 – 2020




Creating a sustainable future
Expanding services to the wider community, including those with
associated gut/auto-immune diseases
Building strategic partnerships with other service providers across WA to
not only build awareness of coeliac disease but also the benefits of a
gluten free diet to the wider community
Becoming a well-known point of reference for information and delivering a
high quality service of diet and nutrition advice, in particular around a
gluten free lifestyle.

Coeliac Disease Awareness
Coeliac Awareness Week is held annually from 13-20 March. The 2016
campaign focused on creating awareness among general practitioners. By
engaging GPs through medical publications and networks, awareness of coeliac
disease and best practice for screening will be raised. Coeliac WA sponsored the
St John of God 2016 GP CPD Session in February 2016 with over 100 GPs in
attendance.

President’s Report
As I sit to write my tenth President’s report, I am reflecting on how
the organisation has grown over time. Where once we were a group
of well-meaning people trying our best to provide education and support for a
relatively unknown disease, we are now well known within both the community
and a vital organisation within the health system. Most importantly timely
diagnosis and awareness are consistently gaining momentum.
Changes to government policy regarding the funding of not-for-profits in
general, coupled with the changes within the Health Department, have given us
the opportunity this year to reflect on where we want to head for the future and
how we can best serve the wider community.
To ensure we are adaptive and responsive to a changing world, we embarked on
a strategic process that has given us an even greater understanding of the value
we provide to the community.
Our evidence based clinical knowledge not only on coeliac disease, but also on
the benefits of a gluten-free lifestyle for other related diseases, gives us the
opportunity to work collaboratively with other organisations to promote
diagnosis and awareness across a range of disorders.
We are hoping over the next 2-4 years to shape these partnerships, provide
greater knowledge about other diseases and their symptoms to our members, as
well as share our own internal knowledge with other community organisations.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank our staff who have been
instrumental in supporting us through this strategic process and their
commitment to our members and their wellbeing goes above and beyond
expectation.
We hope you will find value in the changes we are making to ensure our
sustainable future and to work more collaboratively across our unique health
sector. Thank you once again for your support, for without you we would not be
here.

NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2016
___________________________________________________________________
NOTE 1: STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANT ACCOUNTING POLICIES
This financial report is a special purpose financial report prepared in order to
satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Association Incorporations Act
(WA). The Committee has determined that the Association is not a reporting
entity.
The financial report has been prepared on an accruals basis and is based on
historic costs and does not take into account changing money values.
No Australian Accounting Standards or other authoritative pronouncements of
the Australian Accounting Standards Board have been applied.
The following material accounting policies, which are consistent with the
previous period unless otherwise stated, have been adopted in the preparation
of this financial report.
INVENTORIES
Inventories are measured at the lower of cost and net realisable value. Costs
are assigned on a first-in first-out basis.
PROPERTY, PLANT AND EQUIPMENT
Each class of property, plant and equipment is carried at cost or fair value less,
where applicable, any accumulated depreciation.
a) Property
Freehold land and buildings are measured on the fair value basis, being the
amount for which an asset could be exchanged between knowledgeable
willing parties in an arm’s length transaction.
b) Plant and equipment
The carrying amount of plant and equipment is reviewed annually to ensure it is
not in excess of the recoverable amount from those assets.
15
Coeliac WA 2015 – 2016 Annual Report
THE COELIAC SOCIETY OF WESTERN AUSTRALIA INC.
NOTES TO THE FINANCIAL STATEMENTS
FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 JUNE 2016
___________________________________________________________________
The recoverable amount is assessed on the basis of the expected net cash
flows that will be received from the assets employment and subsequent
disposal. The expected net cash flows have not been discounted to present
values in determining the recoverable amounts.
c) Depreciation
The depreciable amount of all fixed assets including buildings and capitalised
leased assets, but excluding freehold land, is depreciated on a straight line
basis over their useful lives to The Coeliac Society of Western Australia Inc
commencing from the time the asset is held ready for use. Properties held
for investment purposes are not subject to a depreciation charge. Leasehold
improvements are depreciated over the shorter of either the unexpired
period of the lease or the estimated useful lives of the improvements.
EMPLOYEE ENTITLEMENTS
Provision is made for the liability for employee entitlements arising from services
rendered by employees to balance date. Employee entitlements expected to be
settled within one year together with entitlements arising from wages and
salaries, annual leave and sick leave which will be settled after one year, have
been measured at the present value of the estimated future cash out flows to be
made for those entitlements.
Contributions are made by The Coeliac Society of Western Australia Inc to an
employee superannuation fund and are charged as expenses when incurred.
The Coeliac Society of Western Australia Inc does not record, as an asset or a
liability, the difference between the employer established defined benefit
superannuation plan’s accrued benefits and the net market value of the plans
assets.
The Coeliac Society of Western Australia Inc operates an ownership-based
remuneration scheme. Profits or losses incurred by employees, being the
difference between the market value and the par value of the shares acquired,
are not recorded as remuneration paid to employees.
