Riverwalk Landing was superb! Hope you were able to attend. It was really
good to see in the program the recognition given to the YWC, and many
others, for the support to this event. Our club does great things!
The Fifes and Drums of York Town were featured in the Pre-concert
program. The Yorktown Woman’s Club is very proud to support this
talented group of young people! The YWC supports many activities in our
community and truly represents the GFWC’s “Living the Volunteer Spirit.”
The Pre-concert program also included the judging of several picnic groups
based on their theme, decorations, and presentation. “The Little Table by
Jones” was selected for Honorable Mention. I was glad to be a member of
this group headed up by our own Connie Jones. We do have talent in YWC!
All members, and especially our new members, are encouraged to attend

Gladys and I are very excited to have so many members
volunteer as Docents this year - 23! We just received the
preliminary schedule from the School Board and want to
assign Docents to the days in the list provided as soon as
possible since the program starts Sept. 17. The program
runs on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is best for us to know
ahead of time what days you cannot serve, so please send
me an email or phone reply telling me what Tuesdays and
Thursdays you cannot serve. You can say something like
“no 2nd Tuesdays or no Thursdays at all, etc.”

We are starting off the new year with a September
th
meeting on the 19 at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Jane
May,104 Brantley Ct., Yorktown.
We will be planting bulbs for Christmas blooms! Hope to
see you there! RSVP: Jane, 867-6717 Twyla, 988-1006
We are now in the season of anticipation for Yorktown
Day. I want to remind everyone, but particularly new
members, that we do have a collection of dresses. Kind
members who are no longer participating in Yorktown
Day have generously donated their colonial dress. We
currently have 8 dresses. They range from plain to fancy
with waist sizes 36 to 40 ½. Some have a design that
could be let out in the waist. If you are in need of a dress
and would like to adopt a one of our dresses, please call
me. We do have several dressmakers who can also
make you a dress. I can help you with getting this done.

Yorktown Day Updates:
YORKTOWN DAY PIES
Martha Copes
Each member is expected to provide either 2 deep dish
pies or 24 cookies or $16.00.
1..2..3..4….Do you hear it? It’s the beat of a march! Who’s
marching? We are – step by step drawing closer to October
th
19 and Yorktown Day. And Hallelujah – there will be a
parade!
As some of you may have heard the National Park Service is
not co-sponsoring Yorktown Day this year. While they have
issued a permit to the Woman’s Club for use of the grounds
where we hold our stew event, they will not be providing the
usual support for Yorktown Day; such as digging the fire pit,
providing trash receptacles and picking them up at the end of
the day and mowing the grass prior to the event, unless it
happens to be in their regular schedule. And of course there
was to be no parade.
NO PARADE ON YORKTOWN DAY? WHAT? Many folks
were aghast at the prospect of not having a parade. But…I
am extremely happy to tell you that the VFW 824 has come
forth to sponsor this year’s Yorktown Day Parade, a uniquely
patriotic American event. The theme for this event is “The
Birth of American Independence”.
So now it is September and Brunswick stew is little more than
a month away; but we are good to go! All required tasks to
date are completed and all of the issues caused by the
change in the participation of the National Park Service
resolved. Many thanks go to Mary Moore, Lynda Burton and
Carol Scott for their help in bringing this about.
So, onward we march! In this issue you will find your
committee assignments for Yorktown Day and Preparation
Day. Look at them carefully. Committee chairmen will be
contacting you soon to let you know the details of your
participation. Each member will have 2 assignments, one for
Yorktown Day and one for Preparation Day.
This year we will be using only bought iced tea, sweet and
unsweetened. This is so that we are in compliance with the
Health Department. It is most likely that each member will be
asked to donate 2 gallon jugs of tea. There will be an update
regarding this in the October newsletter. The unsweetened
tea is sometimes difficult to find but I did locate it in the cold
beverage section near the orange juice in several stores.
We will be using the bamboo serving trays as they worked
well last year. So those of you who have trays please bring
them to the Parish Hall on Prep Day. Don’t forget to put your
name on them.
I do hope you are looking forward to this Yorktown Day as
much as I am. Since it falls on a Saturday it may have a
slightly different flavor. So let’s step together and make this a
fantastic Yorktown Day!
If you have questions about Yorktown Day you can contact
your Committee Chairman or me – your
PIES may be chopped pecan, fruit (apple, cherry,
blueberry, peach), or Japanese fruit pies. You may bake 2
Mrs. Smiths or Marie Callender pies if you prefer. Note:
Please spray pan before putting in crust in order to make
cutting and serving easier. Pies should not be warm when
delivered to Grace Church. AND PLEASE NO LATTICE
TOPS, CUSTARD, CREAM OR PUMPKIN PIES AS
THESE ARE NOT APPROVED BY THE HEALTH
DEPARTMENT.
Please deliver your cooked pies to Grace Church between
th
9 and 10 am on October 18 .
Please do not bring commercial prebaked pies. They do not
hold up well.
COOKIES – If baking cookies you will find recipes on the
club’s website or you may buy sugar or molasses type
cookies at Kmart or Costco. Each cookie should be a least
3 inches in diameter. They should be packaged in Ziploc
bags -- 2 to the bag -- and delivered to Grace Church
th
between 9 and 10 am on October 18 .
Don’t forget, if you send $16.00 it must be received by the
th
Treasurer at least 2-days before October 18 (pie cutting
day.) Another member will have to make pies for you.
Maybe a friend who is not a member could bake and deliver
for you.
The public looks forward to our Home Bakes Pies.
Happy Pie Baking Day!!
Enclosed are your
Yorktown Day
Assignments!
Please be sure to read the list carefully. In most cases,
you will be assigned two committees. One will be prior to
the 19th and one will be on the day of the event. If at all
possible, please be there in a timely manner! Yorktown
Day is on Saturday this year and we expect a large crowd.
Please contact Merle Burgess at 757-898-5022 or
[email protected] if there is a problem with your
assignment or if your name does not appear. We need
many hands to support our biggest Fundraiser. All
proceeds used to support charities.

Yorktown Day, Oct. 19, commemorates the victory of George
Washington and Allied troops over British General Lord
Cornwallis. After Cornwallis’ surrender on Oct. 19, 1781, Victory
in the Revolutionary War was assured by this last major land
battle. Each year on Oct. 19, the National Park Service and York
County sponsor festivities to mark the victory celebration.
The Brunswick Stew Luncheon at Yorktown Day is the main
fundraiser for our club. Each member is asked to participate by
working and baking 2 pies or 2 dozen cookies.. The luncheon,
consisting of Brunswick stew, 2 ham or butter biscuits, pie and a
beverage, takes place on the lawn of Grace Episcopal Church on
th
Main Street. The stew is made on 2 days before the 19 in the
kitchen of a York County school and transported to the church.
th
On the 18 , pies are delivered to the church where they are
sliced, and ham and butter biscuits are put together.
th
On the 19 , rented tables and chairs are set up on the grounds.
Members dressed in Colonial dresses help decorate the tables,
give out programs and menus, serve the luncheon, help guests
take their food to the tables, total bills, take payment, clear tables,
clean the kitchen, and do various other tasks. The lawn is a
beehive of activity from early morning until around 1 when all the
food is gone. Members return home bone-tired, but content that
they have made a lot of people happy!
Projects Report
Gracie Wetzel
I Hope you all had a great summer, with family and friends. I
received an e-mail letting me know that I have new members on
the Project Committee. Yeah! They are co-chair, Camille
McDonald, Susan Batson, Ginny Napier, Kris Butz, Margie
Dumas, and Robin Milewski. Welcome, to all of you.
I would like to plan a get together at my home, so we can brain
storm, and think of some ideas for a club project after the
holidays. Now I am collecting the small bottles of shampoo,
lotions, soaps, etc. that you do not use when you stay at hotels. I
would like to give these out to our homeless vets and DAV. I
would and also help the VFW during the year, especially during
upcoming holidays. Yes, we can do this.
ICE CHESTS
ICE CHESTS
ICE CHESTS
Soon, we will be celebrating Yorktown Day, and I ask anyone
who has an ice chest, if we can borrow it to hold ice bags during
Yorktown Day. I plan to buy extra ice, because this year our
Yorktown Day falls on a Saturday. Hopefully we will have more
people and sell more cold drinks, I will need more ice chests to
keep drinks cold. If you can help me out, let me know at 757-3698112.
In addition, if any of you have some unused yarn, that you would
like to donate, please let me know. In the meantime, I will start
collecting" COOKBOOKS. I would like to sell cookbooks. If you
have books to donate, let me know.
Ladies, any of the things we sell or raffle help raise extra
money, for our club.
