The Sterilizing Hood
Who Can Attend?
DNA testing is a highly sensitive technique. Preventing contamination is critical within the
free program. However, the class limit is 25 participants to ensure personal attention and time for
laboratory. GPF purchased the sterilizing hood so forensic specialists can work in an environment
where foreign DNA and trace evidence will not contaminate evidence. Sterilization occurs with
UV lights and thorough cleaning of the work space. After which, evidence can be processed for
DNA testing.
NIBIN and the Stereozoom Microscope
The lab uses the NIBIN equipment to acquire digital images of cartridge cases recovered from
crime scenes or crime gun test fires. The forensic specialists enter the samples into the NIBIN
equipment. The samples are run against other NIBIN entries at local, regional and national levels.
This allows the VRCL to establish links between crimes quickly, even some that might not have
been detected otherwise.
GPF bought the microscope so forensic specialists are able to examine the fine details on the
cartridge cases which are used to position the cartridge cases properly into the NIBIN equipment.
Anyone who works or lives in Glendale and is over the age of 18 is eligible to apply to attend this

“As a business owner in Downtown Glendale I already had a deep appreciation and respect for GPD. So when I was introduced to the Academy I had
no problem deciding to attend, and it turned out to be one of the highlights of
my time in Glendale.
“It opened my eyes in different ways. The Academy is intended to allow
citizens to learn about
police operations.”
Jorge Acevedo, past
participant.
There was clearly a lot of planning to ensure we had special access to areas,
and information that’s normally only for law enforcement. I finished with a
better understanding of what goes on in the department. I also had a lot of
FUN! Along with lectures & field trips we had some hands on moments (no,
you’ll have to find out for yourself) . I invite you to have your own ‘behind the
scenes’ experience.” Sincerely, Vickie McConnell
