In honor of Johnny Appleseed, here are some apple
recipes and activities to try with your family!

olk legends tell of Johnny Appleseed wearing
a pot for a hat, a coffee sack for a shirt, and no
shoes. There are many tales which describe him as a
medicine man to the Indians, and stories of him giving apple seeds and saplings to people everywhere
he went. He was a hard worker who did his clearing
and planting himself, and he often lived alone for
weeks at a time with wild animals for companionship. Although we don’t know if these stories are

4 unpeeled chopped apples
2 TBs. honey or brown sugar
Dash of ground cinnamon
• Cut apples into medium-size pieces.
Boil in 1 inch of water over low heat
until tender. Stir in honey or brown
sugar. Add a dash of cinnamon.

name John Chapman, and was only
later nicknamed ‘Appleseed’ after
planting apple trees across the
frontier.

Let your children help whip up this dessert
quickly and easily.
Ingredients
4 apples
1/4 cup crunchy breakfast cereal
1/4 cup cinnamon
1/2 cup raisins
2 Tbsp. honey
• Core the apples. Combine cereal, cinnamon, and raisins in a small bowl. Place
the mixture inside the apple cavities. Place
in a shallow baking dish and add 1/4 cup
water. Bake uncovered for 40 minutes at
350 degrees.
