Krishnamurti was lauded as the new messiah or world teacher and was to be the head of the newly created “Order of the Star of The East” founded by the Theosophical Society. However, just as he was handed the reigns of this organization in 1929, he disbanded it. Krishnamurti lived out the rest of his life questioning organized religion and spiritual systems and showing people how most of their beliefs are conditioned into them from the time of their birth. In this class, we will use various books and lectures written and conducted by J. Krishnamurti to pose difficult questions to ourselves about what we actually believe, and why. This course looks at the history of women, property, wages and the law from the Colonial period into the 21st Century. In doing so, it considers how married women were viewed legally and how their legal status barred them from owning property or their wages. Additionally, it explores the social and economic limits placed on single women. The course also examines the fight for economic and legal rights in the 19th Century and how women were seen as consumers, not providers, thus justifying lower pay for the same work. Within this consideration, the course will also discuss how women used the growing economic power of consumption to create greater political leverage. Finally, it will look at legal changes in the 20th Century that on the surface offered economic equality, but in the end failed to close the wage gap between men and women. DATES: Wednesdays, July 12, 19, 26; from 4:00pm to 6:00pm LOCATION: Lawrence Center, Room B, 200 E. New England Ave., Winter Park, FL 32789 INSTRUCTOR: Patricia Farless TITLE: The Gilded Age in the United States: Bring Us Your Industry DESCRIPTION: This course examines the rapid economic growth that took place following the Civil War and Reconstruction. It considers the greed and political corruption associated with the Gilded Age as the pursuit of “free labor” ideology became distorted in an economy that saw the rise of monopolies. In doing so, it looks at the rise of big business and the challenges these gains posed to farmers, labor and the middle class. Finally, it fleshes out the shift in legal thought that saw corporations viewed as “persons” and the establishment of “liberty of contract” and economic substantive due process as a way to limit state and federal regulations. DATES: Wednesdays, July 12, 19, 26; from 6:00pm to 8:00pm LOCATION: Lawrence Center, Room B, 200 E. New England Ave., Winter Park, FL 32789 INSTRUCTOR: Robert Bernstein TITLE: Introduction To Meditation For Everyday Life DESCRIPTION: This class is good for those new to meditation or those wishing to review or deepen their practice. We will examine and discuss thoughts related to meditation from the Dalai Lama, Eckart Tolle, Marianne Williamson, Ram Dass, Carl Jung and others. Please bring any quotes you may like, books that have been helpful to you, to share. Meditation teaches us how to: Love our neighbor as ourself, but, not more, or less, or instead of ourself, as ourself. Meditation underlines that as Carl Jung wrote: “The greatest and most important problems of life . . . can never be solved but only outgrown.” And above all that: there are only two ways to see, to feel, to experience anything in our lives, with peace of mind or without.
