TITLE: The First and Last Freedom: The Teachings of J. Krishnamurti
DESCRIPTION: J. Krishnamurti was lauded as the new messiah or world teacher
and was to be the head of the newly created “Order of the Star of The East”
founded by the Theosophical Society. However, just as he was handed the
reigns of this organization in 1929, he disbanded it. Krishnamurti lived out the
rest of his life questioning organized religion and spiritual systems and
showing people how most of their beliefs are conditioned into them from the
time of their birth. In this class, we will use various books and lectures written
and conducted by J. Krishnamurti to pose difficult questions to ourselves
about what we actually believe, and why.

TITLE: History of Genocide: “What”, “Why” and “For Whom” from Sparta to
Myanmar
DESCRIPTION:
This in-depth survey of the history of genocide is not a dark,
mournful course, but a discussion of why particular human behavior has
transcended time. It is designed to prompt objective debate rather than
encourage subjectivity and emotion. It will concentrate primarily on
genocidal acts committed in the 20th Century, but it will search for causation
from antiquity to the present. The course will be based on the discipline of
history but it will utilize a multi-disciplinary approach as it seeks cause, effect
and possible solutions to genocide and associated crimes against humanity.
DATES: Wednesdays, July 5, 12, 15, 26; from 3:00pm to 4:30pm
LOCATION: Lawrence Center, Room B, 200 E. New England Ave., Winter Park,

NOTES:
Because of my academic and scholastic credentials, I was deliberately
positioned by the military to witness firsthand, genocide in Rwanda, Sudan,
and Bosnia. These twin experiences, academic and military, I now bring to a
discussion of the intricacies of genocide
INSTRUCTOR: Patricia Farless
TITLE: Women and the Wage Gap in American History
DESCRIPTION: Ever ask yourself why there is still a pay gap between men and
women? This course looks at the history of women, property, wages and the
law from the Colonial period into the 21st Century. In doing so, it considers
how married women were viewed legally and how their legal status barred
them from owning property or their wages. Additionally, it explores the social
and economic limits placed on single women. The course also examines the
fight for economic and legal rights in the 19th Century and how women were
seen as consumers, not providers, thus justifying lower pay for the same
work. Within this consideration, the course will also discuss how women used
the growing economic power of consumption to create greater political
leverage. Finally, it will look at legal changes in the 20th Century that on the
surface offered economic equality, but in the end failed to close the wage gap
between men and women.
DATES: Wednesdays, July 12, 19, 26; from 4:00pm to 6:00pm
LOCATION: Lawrence Center, Room B, 200 E. New England Ave., Winter Park,
FL 32789
INSTRUCTOR: Patricia Farless
TITLE: The Gilded Age in the United States: Bring Us Your Industry
DESCRIPTION: This course examines the rapid economic growth that took place
following the Civil War and Reconstruction. It considers the greed and
political corruption associated with the Gilded Age as the pursuit of “free
labor” ideology became distorted in an economy that saw the rise of
monopolies. In doing so, it looks at the rise of big business and the challenges
these gains posed to farmers, labor and the middle class. Finally, it fleshes out
the shift in legal thought that saw corporations viewed as “persons” and the
establishment of “liberty of contract” and economic substantive due process
as a way to limit state and federal regulations.
DATES: Wednesdays, July 12, 19, 26; from 6:00pm to 8:00pm
LOCATION: Lawrence Center, Room B, 200 E. New England Ave., Winter Park,
FL 32789
INSTRUCTOR: Robert Bernstein
TITLE: Introduction To Meditation For Everyday Life
DESCRIPTION: This class is good for those new to meditation or those wishing to
review or deepen their practice. You will receive an in depth overview of
meditation: what it is, what it says, how it works. There will be instruction in
several methods so you can find one that feels right for you. We will examine
and discuss thoughts related to meditation from the Dalai Lama, Eckart Tolle,
Marianne Williamson, Ram Dass, Carl Jung and others. Please bring any
quotes you may like, books that have been helpful to you, to share. Meditation
teaches us how to: Love our neighbor as ourself, but, not more, or less, or
instead of ourself, as ourself. Meditation underlines that as Carl Jung wrote:
“The greatest and most important problems of life . . . can never be solved but
only outgrown.” And above all that: there are only two ways to see, to feel, to
experience anything in our lives, with peace of mind or without.
Robert is a 15 year meditation teacher, certified, Integral Yoga Institute, NY.
