Absent Reaganomics, what would have happened to American Psycho (Bret Easton Ellis)? How did the literature of the hippie counterculture give rise to an entire film sub-genre? LC This learning community will examine the formation and development of what it has meant to be “American” from Reconstruction to the present. Students will explore questions such as, What are the defining characteristics of American culture and society? Who can be an American? What does it take to go from being an immigrant and foreigner to becoming “red-white-and-blue?” Why do some groups have an easier time of it? Is it possible to be “American” in an age of “multiculturalism” and “diversity”? Using government documents, personal letters and diaries, poetry, fiction, political cartoons, and even modern Hollywood cinema, we will read and write about how Americans have shaped, defined, and defended their identities. There just isn't a better, more fun place to study early America than Virginia and Richmond. Think about it: Where else can you spend a day visiting one of the first English settlements, stop by an early plantation to see life of the rich and poor, visit where Tom Jefferson went to school, sit in the graveyard where Poe's love is buried, stand where Patrick Henry said (we think), "Give me liberty, or give me death," and see where the fate of the Civil War was decided. Much of the history of early America took place in our own back yard, and this class brings together a chance to study this history alongside the writing that helped produce it.
