How to Register for a Learning Community
Getting a Clue LC
This learning community will help you learn to make those critical life choices (like

Virginia Community College System’s first-place honors for Excellence in Education.

Everyday American History LC
This learning community offers students a unique opportunity to learn how major
historical events and policies impacted the everyday life of Americans. Questions to
be explored: How did the Comics Code Authority influence how people perceived
comic books for the next fifty years? Absent Reaganomics, what would have
happened to American Psycho (Bret Easton Ellis)? How did the literature of the
hippie counterculture give rise to an entire film sub-genre? Students will tackle these questions, and
more, with guidance from Labor historian Dr. Jason Sampson (History) and Prof. Josh Watson (English)
through a series of linked assignments that bring students an immersive experience in history and
literature! Students interested in this learning community must register for both course sections listed.

What Does It Mean to Be an American II? LC
This learning community will examine the formation and development
of what it has meant to be “American” from Reconstruction to the
present. Students will explore questions such as, What are the
defining characteristics of American culture and society? Who can be
an American? What does it take to go from being an immigrant and
foreigner to becoming “red-white-and-blue?” Why do some groups
have an easier time of it? Is it possible to be “American” in an age of
“multiculturalism” and “diversity”? Using government documents,
personal letters and diaries, poetry, fiction, political cartoons, and
even modern Hollywood cinema, we will read and write about how
Americans have shaped, defined, and defended their identities. Students interested in this learning
community must register for both course sections listed.

Global Boundaries-Global Connections II LC
College is all about finding your place in the world. Here’s the venue for those of you who want to gain a
wider understanding of different cultures, and who want to improve your ability to overcome the
boundaries (whether based on geography, language, culture, economics, etc.) which can separate you
from others. We help you make connections, and through exploring history, we help you explore and
understand the web of connections between yourself, the place where you live, and the world around you.
This learning community provides a great follow up to “Connections I,” but new students are also
welcome.
This LC pairs the follow ing classes at PRC:
51707
51463
ENG 112-01CP, Tues & Thurs, 1-2:15 pm
HIS 112-01CP, Tues & Thurs, 2:30-3:45 pm
Making History LC
Extra-credit opportunities abound for students in this
learning community. There just isn't a better, more fun
place to study early America than Virginia and
Richmond. Think about it: Where else can you spend a
day visiting one of the first English settlements, stop by
an early plantation to see life of the rich and poor, visit
where Tom Jefferson went to school, sit in the
graveyard where Poe's love is buried, stand where
Patrick Henry said (we think), "Give me liberty, or give
me death," and see where the fate of the Civil War was
decided. Much of the history of early America took place
in our own back yard, and this class brings together a
chance to study this history alongside the writing that
helped produce it. Students interested in this learning
community must register for both course sections listed.

th
the study of 20 Century America with significant
films Hollywood created to entertain and influence
a mass audience. Students will come to

the way in which a growing American film industry
interpreted and presented historical events, social
trends, societal issues, and political challenges.
Neither HIS 122 nor CST 152 are sequential
courses. The only prerequisite for both courses is
placement in ENG 111 or in co-requisites ENG
