HANSON BALDWIN COLLECTION
Scope and Content Note
Hanson W. Baldwin served as military editor of the l~ew York
Times from 1942 until his retirement in 1968. The bulk of the
Baldwin collection concerns events which took place during that time
span.
The collection consists of three major series. An attempt
to retain some original order was made since Baldwin's research on
certain events for his newspaper articles, periodical articles, and
books led to his unique collection of facts and materials.
Series one contains a small amount of material on World War I,
mainly government reports and articles concerning World War I casualties.
Also included in this first series are statistics concerning events
leading up to World War II.
Series two co~prises the bulk of the Baldwin collection.
Materials here chronicle World War II events and are arranged by
subject matter. They consist of military operations reports (published
and unpublished) including one box on the Battle of the Bulge; war plans
strategy session reports; national and international press releases;
articles, speeches, and notes by Hanson Baldwin, and Nuremburg Trial
documents. Of special importance here is a correspondence file
concerning a proposed history of the World Wars. Among the major
correspondents are Hamilton Fish Armstrong, Sylvan M. Barnett, Bruce
C. Clark, Malin Craig, Jr., R. Ernest Dupuy, Walter Krueger, S. L. A.
Marshall, Samuel Eliot Morison and Willis Kingsley Wing. An extensive
general correspondence file is also part of this series. This file
contains critiques of Baldwin's books as well as valuable first-hand
accounts of many World War II battles. It includes major correspondents
such as Hamilton Fish Armstrong, H. H. Arnold, Sylvan M. Barnett, Arleigh
Burke, Bruce C. Clark, Mark W. Clark, Virginius Dabney, C. E. Dornbusch,
Ira C. Eaker, Manton S. Eddy, Hobart R. Gay, Armand Hammer, E. N. Harmon,
Ernest J. King, Arthur Krock, Husband E. Kimmel, B. H. Liddell-Hart,
John Lukacs, Douglas MacArthur, Maurice Matloff, Louis Morton, Robert
Sherrod, Arthur H. Sulzberger, John Warner and Willis Kingsley Wing.
All correspondence is arranged alphabetically. Also included in this series
is an unpublished manuscript by Lewis B. Sebring, Jr. concerning the
1ife of Douglas MacArthur",,, -' F
" I '" I I
Post World War II materials through 1977 comprise the third series.
Much of the current material was collected by Baldwin on fact-finding
missions for his own research interests and because of his dealings with
historians, military personnel and government officials. Among these
materials are correspondence and government reports dealing with the
Korean conflict, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the U.S.S. Pueblo incident,
the Middle East problem and the Vietnamese TET offensive. These materials
are arranged by subject matter with all correspondence being arranged
alphabetically.
In addition to these major series are individual magazines, clippings, and other printed
materials covering the period from World War I to the present. An additional group of books,
periodicals, and newspapers has been transferred to the library collection.
Also included in the collection are maps, certificates, and a sizable collection of photographs, many of them having to do with a proposed pictorial history of the Army.
Additions were made to the collection in May 1994 and June 1994. Included in the May
1994 addtion are correspondence, biographical information, manuscripts, and clippings from the
years 1903-1987. The June 1994 addition includes correspondence, photographs, miscellaneous
documents, programs, and certificates, retirement messages, newspaper and magazine clippings,
and newsletters from the years 1963-1982, and a copy of Reminiscences of Hanson Weightman
Baldwin, U. S. Navy (Retired), Volumes I and II.

Hanson W. Baldwin, 88, a retired
military editor of the New York
Times, the winner of a Pulitzer

days of World War II and the author
or editor of a score of books on military and defense topics, died of
heart ailments Nov. 13 at his home
in Roxbury, Conn. He had Parkinson's disease.
Mr. Baldwin joined the Times in
1928. Over the next 40 years, he
earned a reputation as one of the
nation's most respected military
commentators. During World War
II, he covered campaigns in the
South Pacific, North Africa and Europe.
He won the Pulitzer Prize for
1942 for his reporting from the Pacific. The accompanying citation
spoke of his "accurate reporting,

give an off-the-record briefing on
the conditions he had observed.
When one officer objected that he
was in possession of top secret information, Mr. Baldwin replied that
he had not published it and had no
intention of doing so.
Despite this incident, Mr. Baldwin had generally good relations
with the military. For example, he
was aboard the command ship Augusta for the D-Day landings in

had cordial relations with the leaders of all the services.
Mr. Baldwin's books included
"The Caissons Roll: A Military Survey of Europe," which appeared in
1938 to "The Great Arms Race: A
Comparison of U.S. and Soviet
Power Today," which came out in
1958, and "Strategy for Tomorrow" which was published in 1970.
He ~lso wrote a number of histories
of World War I and World War II
and collections about famous sailors
and sea fights.
In 1968,. Mr. Baldwin retired
from the Times. He spent the next
several years as a roving editor for
the Readers Digest. He was a contributor to the Saturday Evening
Post, Harper's, the National Review and other periodicals.
Mr. Baldwin was born in Baltimore. He graduated from the U.S.
Naval Academy at Annapolis in the
class of 1924 and spent the next
three years serving on battleships
and destroyers in the Atlantic
Fleet. He resigned his commission
in 1927 and joined the Baltimore
Sun as a police reporter.
