Lesson 5.05
DIRECTIONS
Use complete sentences to respond to each question about your novel or short story.
Title of short story or novel _________ “All Summer in a Day” _______________
Author _______Ray Bradbury__________________________
Part 1: The Climax of the Story
1. Describe the climax of your novel or short story in a three- to five-sentence paragraph.
The climax of the story occurs when the rain returns and the students realize that Margot is still
locked in the closet.
2. Provide two examples of dialogue from characters in the story that support the climax you identified.
“‘Oh. Oh.’” In reference to feeling raindrops fall on her. (Bradbury 4)
“‘Margot!’
‘What ?’
‘She’s still in the closet where we locked her.’
‘Margot.’” (Bradbury 4)
3. Provide two examples of text evidence (other than dialogue) to support the climax you identified.
“A few cold drops fell on their noses and their cheeks and their mouths. The sun faded behind a stir of
mist. A wind blew cold around them. They turned and started to walk back toward the underground
house, their hands at their sides, their smiles vanishing away.” (Bradbury 4)
“They stood as if someone had driven them, like so many stakes, into the floor. They looked at each
other and then looked away. They glanced out at the world that was raining now and raining and
raining steadily. They could not meet each other’s glances. Their faces were solemn and pale. They
looked at their hands and feet, their faces down.” (Bradbury 4)
4. In a paragraph of six to eight sentences, explain how the dialogue and text evidence support the climax you
identified.
The examples of dialogue and narrative text plain that when the rain comes back and when the children
realize that Margot was locked in the closet is the climax of the story because they begin to turn the plot
around. When the rain comes back, the children realized how wonderful the sun was and that life will
soon go back to normal. The dialogue “oh oh” represents the students understanding of this wonderful
gift going away. The text other than dialogue shows how devastating the rain is, it violently rains and
breaks spirits and makes others angrier. The dialogue in which the children realize that Margot is still in
the closet is also part of the climax because the children realize that they’ve done something incredibly
wrong and need to fix it. The text support also shows that the children feel horrible. The author uses a
simile to show the remorse the other students feel.
Part 2: Falling Action
In a paragraph of three to five sentences, explain at least two falling action events from your novel or short story and
how they relate to the climax.
The first falling action occurs when the students enter back into the tunnels underground and realize that the
sun is gone for a while.
“They stood in the doorway of the underground for a moment until it was raining hard. Then they
closed the door and heard the gigantic sound of the rain falling in tons and avalanches, everywhere and
forever.
"Will it be seven more years ?’ ‘Yes. Seven.’” (Bradbury 4)
The second falling action occurs when the students realize they need to open the door to let Margot out.
“‘Margot.’
One of the girls said, ‘Well...?’
No one moved.
‘Go on,’ whispered the girl.
They walked slowly down the hall in the sound of cold rain.” (Bradbury 4)
