Bricks 4 Kidz
Animal Adaptations
In this hands-on workshop, you
will build structures out of
LEGO® bricks, using one-of-akind model plans designed by
engineers and architects. While
exploring STEM principles, you
will develop problem solving and
critical thinking skills. You'll
love our interactive Bricks 4
Kidz® models!
Animals are amazing! They have
evolved over time to use their covering,
color and physical structure to adapt,
camouflage, survive, and escape danger.
Through a study of animal pelts and
animal mounts, you will explore the
different ways that vertebrates
(mammals, reptiles, fish and birds) use
their adaptations to survive in various
environments. You will also learn about
patterns and classification.

Egg-Marine Challenge
Theater in Motion
Participants will make egg-marines to
experiment with neutral buoyancy in
water. This is an example of
biomimicry: a submarine uses air and
water to control its level in the water the
way a fish uses its swim bladder.
You will learn about the art of
storytelling through an interactive
and immersive hour of theater
games, creative play and non-stop
fun! Please wear comfortable
clothes and be prepared to move!

ADULT PROGRAM
KEYNOTE ADDRESS, 1:00-2:30 PM ~ WORKSHOPS, 2:55-3:55 PM. YOU CAN ATTEND THE KEYNOTE AND ONE WORKSHOP.
KEYNOTE ADDRESS by Elissa Brown, Ph.D.
The Three R’s: Rigor, Relationships, and Relevance: Educating Gifted Learners in the 21st Century
We now live in an increasingly diverse, globalized, and complex, media-saturated society. We have no idea of what the
world will look in five years, much less 60 years; yet we are charged with preparing our students for life in that world.
What does it mean for parenting and teaching gifted learners in the 21st century in terms of meeting their academic and
social/emotional needs? What are supporting and impeding structures in place which help or hinder us? This interactive
presentation will provide the key elements and essential ingredients needed which contribute to models of excellence for
21st century learning.
Dr. Elissa F. Brown is the director of the Hunter College Center for Gifted Studies and Education and program coordinator of Hunter’s Advanced
Certificate Program in Gifted Education. Before coming to Hunter, she was the North Carolina state director of gifted education and teacher
preparation programs. Dr. Brown was the former director of the Center for Gifted Education at the College of William & Mary from 2002-2007. She
has been a district gifted-program coordinator, the principal of a specialized high school, and a classroom teacher. She has served as an adjunct
professor at several universities, including Rutgers and Duke University. She is a published author in the field of gifted education and presents
widely. She is the parent of three children and lives in East Harlem, NY.
WORKSHOP #1 by Scarlett Lewis – A Formula for Choosing Love
Scarlett will talk about the importance of Social and Emotional Learning in schools and her advocacy in the past three years since the
murder of her 6-year-old son in his classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary. She will share a simple yet profound formula for choosing
love in any situation. She will talk about the neuroscience behind choosing love and its benefits. Scarlett will also discuss Post
Traumatic Growth and the importance of consciously choosing love over fear for a meaningful, connected and fulfilled life.
Scarlett is the founder of The Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation and author of Nurturing Healing Love. Inspired by a simple message her son
wrote on their kitchen chalkboard the day he died, she has been on a journey of forgiveness and a mission to change thoughts of anger into love.
WORKSHOP #2 by Kate Maupin - “Why do I have to do this?” Understanding Your Child’s Worth Audit
Gifted students become very frequent auditors of worth: “What is this assignment, why am I doing it, what does it mean to me and my
life?” Sometimes, it even goes as deep as, “What is the teacher saying about me by having me do this assignment?” Bright children of
all ages can perform this audit, though the language evolves as the child’s reasoning skills do. “This is no fun” or “I don’t want to do
this” in kindergarten and first grade becomes “Why do I have to do this?” in early elementary, and finally, this can ultimately lead to
an “I won’t do this.” What does this process mean for our gifted students, how can we communicate it with our children’s teachers,
and how can we help? A step-by-step process will be detailed and discussed!
Kate Maupin is a gifted-education teacher and enrichment specialist in Connecticut, is the author of the book: Cheating, Dishonesty, and
Manipulation: Why Bright Kids Do It. She is an alumna of the National Research Center on the Gifted and Talented, at the University of
Connecticut, Storrs, and has worked with students throughout New England, as well as in China and Germany, before settling in Connecticut, where
she works with students K-6 and lives with her husband, son, and far too many pets.
WORKSHOP #3 by Gena M. Rotas, LICSW – New Family Habits
With all of the daily academic, social, and extracurricular demands children meet every day, navigating their busy lives can become
overwhelming--particularly for gifted children, whose social and emotional needs require a delicate balance. What if parents could
improve the entire family's well-being by practicing simple daily habits? Starting early in life, we teach children to brush their teeth
and buckle their seat belt, essential practices for health and safety. In this workshop, you will learn how to implement easy researchbased skills and strategies that will help everyone in the family reduce stress and anxiety, flourish, and thrive.
Gena is a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker with a private practice in East Longmeadow. She is the author of Love Your Slim Self and
Love Your Sober Self, a series devoted to helping you find love for yourself and a map to help you flourish in life. She provides strategic and
compassionate Life Coaching using HeartMath, Mindfulness, EFT or Tapping, and mBraining!
WORKSHOP #4 by Robert Selverstone, Ph.D. – Teaching our VALUES to our children; if not now, when?
No lecture; just a chance to consider what VALUES we want our children to learn, to cherish and to live by.
Bob Selverstone, a Westport psychologist in private practice, taught a “Values” course at Staples H.S. for 20+ years – and has conducted 1000+
workshops and presentations in 29 states and on 3 continents to parents and to professionals.
WORKSHOP #5 by Anca Cristina Micu, Ph.D. – Digital Marketing Strategy and Privacy
Companies are using increasingly sophisticated tools to learn our preferences and passions as well as engage us in conversations in the
digital environment. Many times we are not aware of the extent of such corporate efforts or of the type and amount of consumer
information collected. This workshop presents some of the consumer data collection methods through familiar platforms as well as the
kind of information collected. It is then up to us whether or not to share (at least some) of our digital traces.
Anca Cristina Micu, Ph.D. is Associate Dean and Program Director, MS in Digital Marketing at the Jack Welch College of Business at Sacred
Heart University in Fairfield.
WORKSHOP # 6 by Matthew Benjamin – FIRST Robotics: The Varsity Sport for the Mind
Learn about FIRST Robotics, which has been shaping the minds of students in Elementary, Middle and High School for 25+ years
through JrFLL, FLL, FTC and FRC. FIRST, an acronym for “For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology”, is an
international competition to inspire young people to be science and technology leaders by engaging them in exciting Mentor-based
programs that build skills.
