ROOT
INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
Welcome
How
wonderful
that there’s to be a festival in Hastings
and 1066 Country to mark the 950th
anniversary of the Battle of Hastings.
I was born in St Leonards in 1947, and
after four years, our family moved
along the coast to Bexhill. Without any
question, Hastings and Bexhill were
two of the least festive towns in the
country. Given the extraordinary history
of the district, and the seminal things
which had happened there, people
seemed entirely uninterested in the
past, and would have regarded any
kind of celebration as being unseemly.
From time to time, Billy Smart’s Circus
might visit, or there’d be a carnival with
Sabrina or Yana being pulled round on
the back of a truck but for the most
part I was brought up in stifling and
decorous silence.
Clearly things have changed, and
they’ve changed for the better. A visitor
from the 1950s would be amazed both
to see the work at the Jerwood Gallery
in Hastings Old Town and to see the
peeling, tatty De La Warr Pavilion
transformed into a temple of conceptual
art. It’s hard to remember how hard
some of us had to fight in the 1980s
to prevent this Modernist masterpiece
being sold off as a pub. Now, thanks to
the Lottery, it’s restored to its original
splendour – and it’s used.
ROOT 1066 comes along at just the right
moment to mark the re-birth of this part
of the world. Its curious beauty and
distinctive melancholy are as powerful
as ever. But now at last it has sturdy
young life as well.
I am proud to be a Patron of the Festival
and am sure it will be a rip-roaring
success.
David Hare
Festival Patron
Welcome to the ROOT 1066
International Festival and
to six weeks of exhibitions,
performances and events from a
wonderful array of artists.
The Battle of Hastings was such
a significant moment in this
country’s history and a hugely
rich source of inspiration - both
the history itself and the impact
it has had on our culture and
identity.
So this programme, which
includes 13 new commissions
and premières, explores some big
themes: Who are we? Where do
we come from? What is important
to us?
We want to shine a light on
this exciting and creative part
of the country, literally and
metaphorically through projects
that tell the story of 1066 Country
and its communities.
Following the festival programme
will take you to some of the
finest venues in the country and
help you discover some hidden
gems. There is also work in public
spaces so keep a look out around
the Town Centre and Rock-a-Nore.
Finally we want to celebrate
our connections with our
Norman neighbours, with artistic
exchanges between Hastings and
Normandy.
I hope you enjoy the festival and
thank you for marking the 950th
anniversary with us.

Whats on...
Hastings & 1066 Country
Photo/Jonny Thmpson
Hastings has a unique
history and heritage, which
has been the inspiration for
this exciting festival. It also
has a long artistic tradition
and a growing reputation
as a cultural hot spot for
outstanding contemporary
arts, with an eclectic arts
scene fuelled by a thriving
community of artists. These
are huge assets for the
town, improving the quality
of life for local people and
attracting tourists and
investment.
In this year of the 950th
anniversary of the Battle of
Hastings we wanted to
support a project that would
build on these strengths
and connect the past and
the present. Working with
partners around 1066
Country, ROOT 1066 shows
off the best the area has to
offer, with unique projects
from local, national and
international artists that will
linger in the memories of
audiences and leave a lasting
legacy for the area.
Arts and culture are a key part
of the ongoing regeneration
of Hastings and ROOT
1066 will make a significant
contribution to the journey.
If you’re unfamiliar with
Hastings I’d like to welcome
you to a town that’s vibrant,
exciting, innovative and more
than a little eccentric. But
whether you were born and
bred here, or visiting for the
first time, it gives me great
pleasure to offer you our very
special ROOT 1066 Festival.
I’m sure you’ll enjoy it.

Jerwood Gallery presents a major
exhibition of the celebrated
English artist Marcus Harvey. ‘Inselaffe’ is a German word
meaning ‘Island Monkeys’ – used
to describe the people of Britain,
a tongue-in-cheek theory that
evolution must have stalled in
the UK, explaining the yobbish
manners of the British.
From national emergency to local
celebrations, kings to smugglers,
local industries to scientific
breakthroughs and famous artists
to Punch & Judy – all the items on
show played a part in creating the
unique and quirky town you see
today.

Hastings may be most famous
for the battle of 1066, but a lot
has happened here in the 950
years since. This new exhibition
presents a snapshot of the town’s
most significant people and
events through 66 objects, many
suggested and voted on by the
local community.
Harvey’s most recent work
forges motifs and emblems of
Britishness, such as military
memorabilia and joke shop knickknacks, into collaged portraits of
historical figures – from Nelson to
Margaret Thatcher, Napoleon to
Tony Blair.
‘I gravitate towards British issues,
not in a political way, in an iconic
way…I’m just beginning to have
the audacity to call myself a
history painter.’

The sculpture, called The Landing, will rise like the prow

Hastings-based sculptor Leigh

Exploring the idea of ‘living
history’, Andrew Moran and
Nigel Green decided to seek
out the modern Normans in
our midst by using inherited
surnames. Starting with the 14
close compatriots of William the
Conqueror thought to have been
at the Battle of Hastings, they
used the Battle Roll to expand
the pool of names to over 400.
John Cole has been
photographing the Hastings
fishing community since 1991 and
a number of his photos can be
seen hanging on the black net
huts and fishmongers’ shops of
Rock-a-Nore.
ROOT 1066 has sent John to
Normandy, to photograph the
fishermen and their families of the
small fishing village of Quiberville,
near Dieppe. During the festival,
a dozen Quiberville portraits will
hang on the net huts alongside
their Hastings counterparts. The
project illustrates the strong
connections between the two
fishing communities, binding
England and France through an

The Flat Pack
Castle
Pop-up Space/

Did you know that the very first
Hastings Castle was a flat pack?
It was a wooden ‘motte and
bailey’ construction brought
over in pieces on the Norman
longboats for quick and easy
assembly, allowing time for a
stone castle to be built. Inspired
by this story, ROOT 1066
commissioned Hastings artist
Bob Humm to make his own
version.
As the story goes, at least one
version of the story, William the
Conqueror asked one of his close
companions, William Malet, (Alice
Mallet’s ancestor) to bury King
Harold. William claimed Harold
had lied to him about supporting
his claim to the English throne;
therefore he did not deserve a
proper religious burial. An account
by William of Poitiers relates that
some Normans remarked ‘in jest’
that “he who guarded the coast
with such insensate zeal should be
buried by the sea shore”.
Harold’s mother Gytha, desperate,
asked for his body and proposed
to give in exchange the weight of
the body in gold. This was refused
14 1066contemporary.com
to her. The body was buried on the beach under a cairn
of stones, and later moved to Waltham Abbey.
On Saturday 1 October a live event will commemorate
this story with a new vocal work by composer Norman
Yamada, sung by local choir the Shady Pines. Visitors
can take away a golden pebble as a reminder of a
mother’s love. See p38 for more information.

Stranger on the
Shore
As night falls on 14 October 1066,
thousands of men lie dead in a
field. None will ever again see
their families, their land... or their
dinner.
Film/
It’s different by the sea. A
bit strange even – a site of
eccentricity, transgression,
colour and romance. Stranger
on the Shore is a cycle of videopoems looking at the bohemian
eccentricity of Hastings, the
dockside desolation of the
Thames Estuary, and the spooky
enchantment of Whitby.
Raise a glass to their ghosts
– and enjoy a delicious locallysourced three-course meal
created by innovative chefs
Blanch and Shock – as your hosts
pick over the bones of a battle
which still affects our daily lives.
The Hastings film will also be
shown on a loop at Jerwood
Gallery on 6 September, between
4-8pm.
Whether you’re Norman, AngloSaxon or just hungry, come
dressed as a battlefield ghost
for this celebratory communal
experience about the past,
present and future.
Veggie/vegan option. Cash bar.

Seven Hastings choirs converge
on Sussex Coast College’s atrium
in a thrilling choral invasion. Each
has teamed up with a composer
and a poet to create musical
narratives inspired by the Bayeux
Tapestry. The choral creations
are linked by a new piece from
Orlando Gough, accompanied
by percussionists Liam Genockey
and Emmanuel McDonald.
Leading British artist Fiona Banner
presents an immersive installation
exploring her ongoing interest
in language and its limitations.
The exhibition, which takes place
both inside and outside of the
gallery, is a play on digital vs.
material experiences.
Banner continues her Full Stop
sculptures – a sequence of full
stops from typefaces blown
up to human scale, previously
produced in polystyrene and
bronze – reformed here as
large inflatables. They will
be presented as a series of
happenings around the Pavilion.
Full stops also feature in a vast
32 1066contemporary.com
window installation spanning the full length of the
gallery, making illusory sculptural interventions, or
Buoys, on the seascape beyond.
The Vanity Press, Banner’s publishing wing, has been
central to her practice since 1997. In the gallery Banner
uses www.thevanitypress.com as an interface to
present film projects as a series of large projections.
The website, which is usually used to access an artist’s
work when the work itself isn’t present, here becomes
integral to the work.

How do you get a whole town
to tell its story? Hastings Speaks
held a Diary Day on 12 May, where
Hastings people from all walks
of life recorded their day using
words, images, digital media
and conversations. It captured
people’s everyday experiences –
what made them get out of bed,
what made them angry, what
made them laugh.
Some of the stories captured will
be shared at this event, through
diary readings, songs and videos.
Diary entries will be displayed
at Hastings Museum from 13

anthology will also be published.

The Bayeux Tapestry is an
extraordinary example of AngloNorman art and workmanship.
In addition it is chronicle,
political propaganda and visual
evidence of 11th century mundane
objects and way of life, all on a
monumental scale.
3,000,000 pieces of spring steel, it holds the Guinness
World Record as the largest steel mosaic. The artwork is
a complete re-creation of the Bayeux Tapestry and was
created over 20 years by Michael Linton. It measures 64
metres in length and weighs 450kg.
Celebrate the story of the event
that transformed England’s
culture and heritage, as told by
those that were there at the time,
and interpreted by Gale OwenCrocker, Professor Emerita of The
University of Manchester.

In the wake of the EU referendum this exhibition takes ideas from ‘The Europeans’, a novel by
Rye author, Henry James, on the 100th anniversary of his death. James’ novel explores the

This group of contemporary European artists investigate these ideas and raise questions
