ROOT INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL Welcome How wonderful that there’s to be a festival in Hastings and 1066 Country to mark the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings. I was born in St Leonards in 1947, and after four years, our family moved along the coast to Bexhill. Without any question, Hastings and Bexhill were two of the least festive towns in the country. Given the extraordinary history of the district, and the seminal things which had happened there, people seemed entirely uninterested in the past, and would have regarded any kind of celebration as being unseemly. From time to time, Billy Smart’s Circus might visit, or there’d be a carnival with Sabrina or Yana being pulled round on the back of a truck but for the most part I was brought up in stifling and decorous silence. Clearly things have changed, and they’ve changed for the better. A visitor from the 1950s would be amazed both to see the work at the Jerwood Gallery in Hastings Old Town and to see the peeling, tatty De La Warr Pavilion transformed into a temple of conceptual art. It’s hard to remember how hard some of us had to fight in the 1980s to prevent this Modernist masterpiece being sold off as a pub. Now, thanks to the Lottery, it’s restored to its original splendour – and it’s used. ROOT 1066 comes along at just the right moment to mark the re-birth of this part of the world. Its curious beauty and distinctive melancholy are as powerful as ever. But now at last it has sturdy young life as well. I am proud to be a Patron of the Festival and am sure it will be a rip-roaring success. David Hare Festival Patron Welcome to the ROOT 1066 International Festival and to six weeks of exhibitions, performances and events from a wonderful array of artists. The Battle of Hastings was such a significant moment in this country’s history and a hugely rich source of inspiration - both the history itself and the impact it has had on our culture and identity. So this programme, which includes 13 new commissions and premières, explores some big themes: Who are we? Where do we come from? What is important to us? We want to shine a light on this exciting and creative part of the country, literally and metaphorically through projects that tell the story of 1066 Country and its communities. Following the festival programme will take you to some of the finest venues in the country and help you discover some hidden gems. There is also work in public spaces so keep a look out around the Town Centre and Rock-a-Nore. Finally we want to celebrate our connections with our Norman neighbours, with artistic exchanges between Hastings and Normandy. I hope you enjoy the festival and thank you for marking the 950th anniversary with us. Hastings & 1066 Country Photo/Jonny Thmpson Hastings has a unique history and heritage, which has been the inspiration for this exciting festival. It also has a long artistic tradition and a growing reputation as a cultural hot spot for outstanding contemporary arts, with an eclectic arts scene fuelled by a thriving community of artists. These are huge assets for the town, improving the quality of life for local people and attracting tourists and investment. In this year of the 950th anniversary of the Battle of Hastings we wanted to support a project that would build on these strengths and connect the past and the present. Working with partners around 1066 Country, ROOT 1066 shows off the best the area has to offer, with unique projects from local, national and international artists that will linger in the memories of audiences and leave a lasting legacy for the area. Arts and culture are a key part of the ongoing regeneration of Hastings and ROOT 1066 will make a significant contribution to the journey. If you’re unfamiliar with Hastings I’d like to welcome you to a town that’s vibrant, exciting, innovative and more than a little eccentric. But whether you were born and bred here, or visiting for the first time, it gives me great pleasure to offer you our very special ROOT 1066 Festival. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it. Harvey’s most recent work forges motifs and emblems of Britishness, such as military memorabilia and joke shop knickknacks, into collaged portraits of historical figures – from Nelson to Margaret Thatcher, Napoleon to Tony Blair. ‘I gravitate towards British issues, not in a political way, in an iconic way…I’m just beginning to have the audacity to call myself a history painter.’ Marcus Harvey Ticket prices: www.jerwoodgallery.org 09 Sat 3 – Fri 9 Sept Leigh Dyer and the British Artist Blacksmiths Association/ Blacksmiths on the Beach Live forging event/New Commission/ Hastings and Rother Schools/ Mightier than the Sword Photo/Dave Reading Exhibition/ The thrill of seeing craftspeople shaping hot iron, the smell of coke fires and the noise of hammers on anvils combine to produce terrific theatre. The sculpture, called The Landing, will rise like the prow of a Norman longboat out of the shingle. It incorporates a time capsule of letters from local residents to friends, family and the community, to be opened in 2066 on the 1000th anniversary. Hastings-based sculptor Leigh Dyer, in collaboration with the British Artist Blacksmiths Association, will produce a new piece of public art at a live blacksmithing event. Starting with the 14 close compatriots of William the Conqueror thought to have been at the Battle of Hastings, they used the Battle Roll to expand the pool of names to over 400. John Cole has been photographing the Hastings fishing community since 1991 and a number of his photos can be seen hanging on the black net huts and fishmongers’ shops of Rock-a-Nore. ROOT 1066 has sent John to Normandy, to photograph the fishermen and their families of the small fishing village of Quiberville, near Dieppe. During the festival, a dozen Quiberville portraits will hang on the net huts alongside their Hastings counterparts. The project illustrates the strong connections between the two fishing communities, binding England and France through an 12 1066contemporary.com The contemporary Normans who have collaborated in this project may have direct or more convoluted connections with the past – but they most certainly would not be named as they are had the Norman invasion not happened. industry that has been important to both for so many years. It was a wooden ‘motte and bailey’ construction brought over in pieces on the Norman longboats for quick and easy assembly, allowing time for a stone castle to be built. Inspired by this story, ROOT 1066 commissioned Hastings artist Bob Humm to make his own version. As the story goes, at least one version of the story, William the Conqueror asked one of his close companions, William Malet, (Alice Mallet’s ancestor) to bury King Harold. William claimed Harold had lied to him about supporting his claim to the English throne; therefore he did not deserve a proper religious burial. An account by William of Poitiers relates that some Normans remarked ‘in jest’ that “he who guarded the coast with such insensate zeal should be buried by the sea shore”. Harold’s mother Gytha, desperate, asked for his body and proposed to give in exchange the weight of the body in gold. This was refused 14 1066contemporary.com to her. The body was buried on the beach under a cairn of stones, and later moved to Waltham Abbey. On Saturday 1 October a live event will commemorate this story with a new vocal work by composer Norman Yamada, sung by local choir the Shady Pines. Visitors can take away a golden pebble as a reminder of a mother’s love. See p38 for more information. Leading British artist Fiona Banner presents an immersive installation exploring her ongoing interest in language and its limitations. The exhibition, which takes place both inside and outside of the gallery, is a play on digital vs. material experiences. Banner continues her Full Stop sculptures – a sequence of full stops from typefaces blown up to human scale, previously produced in polystyrene and bronze – reformed here as large inflatables. They will be presented as a series of happenings around the Pavilion. Full stops also feature in a vast 32 1066contemporary.com window installation spanning the full length of the gallery, making illusory sculptural interventions, or Buoys, on the seascape beyond. The Vanity Press, Banner’s publishing wing, has been central to her practice since 1997.
