Greetings to All,
It’s time for us to begin looking ahead and making plans for our 2017
Travel Schedule. You will find next years Travel Survey in the back of this
newsletter. Please take a moment and tell us what you would like to see us
offer.
For the past two years Washington, DC and a cruise to the Bahamas were
third and fourth choices of those that returned their surveys to me. So I
thought it was time for me to see if we could accommodate those choices.
We are looking at doing Washington, DC, but the date has not been set. In
researching for a Bahamas Cruise (which is 7 days and three islands), we
found that we could do a Southern Caribbean Cruise 7 nights, but see six
islands for about the same price. We chose to do the Southern Caribbean.
See complete brochure on pages 10—12.
We still have several trips left for this year including our trip to Jefferson.
We had to reschedule this one due to all the flooding that has been plaguing
the areas in and around Caddo Lake. We have made a few changes to the
trip itinerary, but I think this will work much better and no one will feel
rushed.
Waco, Granbury and Glen Rose scheduled for October 6—8, is going to
be a lot of fun. So much to see and do just in Waco. Who knew?
Please look these over and sign up as soon as possible. A deposit is
required to insure your reservation.

Our Rescheduled Day to Get Away!
Let’s Explore Historic
Jefferson, Texas
The Mystic Caddo Lake
Thursday, October 20, 2016
$130.00 per person
Registration Deadline—September 7
It’s late autumn in East Texas and a perfect time of the year for this one
day outing that we had to reschedule due to the flooding in early spring. It’s
not too hot and not too cold, just right for us to venture to Jefferson, Texas,
home of the mysterious Caddo Lake, which boast as the only natural lake in
Texas. Covering over 26,000 acres, half in Texas and half in Louisiana, Caddo sports Spanish moss hanging from the cypress trees and imparts an unforgettable atmosphere of eeriness. Beauty is an understatement. This is indeed
a photographers paradise. We will cruise the lake late afternoon and listen for
the sounds emanating from the swamp.
Arriving early in Jefferson, we will first tour the Excelsior House Hotel.
The Excelsior will welcome you as it has welcomed travelers since the late
l850’s. Southern charm graces this historic hotel with rich rosewood, cherry
and mahogany furnishing.
We are on our own for lunch to dine at any of the neat, quaint dining venues located downtown Jefferson. There is Bayou Bakery, The Cork Yard,
Auntie Skinner’s Riverboat Club, Austin Street
Bistro, The Old Hamburger Store, Kitt’s Kornbread Sandwich Place and Joseph’s Riverport
Barbecue. The choice is yours.
Time to tour the beautiful 1872 “House of The
Seasons” & Gardens. The house is a fine example
of the transition period between Greek Revival and
Victorian styles of architecture. The most unique features of the house are the
cupola and murals. In the cupola each wall contains a different stained glass
that creates the illusion of the seasons of the year.
After visiting this gorgeous home and gardens, we head back downtown for
a time of free shopping or exploring on your own the many tours available.
Places you can tour include Jefferson Historical Museum, Museum of Measurement and Time, Scarlett O’Hardy’s Gone With the Wind Museum, Lafayette Street Vintage Car Museum, or you can choose a carriage ride. Nearby
the Excelsior is Jay Gould’s private Railroad Car , the “Atlanta.” It is neat to
tour with such an interesting history. Oh, don’t forget to stop by The Old General Store for a milk shake or a malt. This store has served East Texas as a
hardware Store and a General Store since the 1870's. Enjoy the authentic
atmosphere, put a nickel in the juke box, sip
on a root beer float, play a game of checkers
and cool your heels. They have lots of neat
stuff to look at and buy..... 5 cent Coffee,
Soda fountain, handmade Pecan Pralines,
Blue Bell Ice Cream, Old-Time Candy
Counter, Texas jams, jellies, and salsas, Texas souvenirs, Old Time toys, T-shirts, hats & caps, candles, Texas Music,
books, greeting cards, antiques, and lots more.
A little before four, we will board the motorcoach and head to Karnack,
Texas to board pontoon boats for our guided tour of Caddo. Be sure to bring
your cameras and binoculars. There over 250 species of birds that make Caddo Lake their home and you never know when you might get that perfect
photo. Occasionally you will also see that elusive alligator. Sit back and enjoy the views.
Immediately after this tour, we will dock at The Big Pine Lodge for a
delicious dinner. Followed by little apple stixs and ice
cream for dessert.
Now it’s time to head back home with a new appreciation of days gone by and thoughts of the tranquil life
of those who live on the banks of the mystic Caddo
Lake.

Tour Highlights: Homestead Her itage Village
* Magnolia Market & Silos * Dr. Pepper Museum
Refreshments * Fossil Rim Wildlife Ranch
* Granbury Town Square * “The Promise”
* Bosque Museum & Arts Center
What a great Fall Tour planned exclusively for the Hometown
Travelers. This time we are traveling “Deep in the Heart of Texas”
where many interesting, inspirational, entertaining & educational experiences await our discovery.
On Day 1, enjoy touring & lunch at Homestead Heritage Traditional Crafts Village, a Chr istian agr icultur al settlement located a few
miles outside Waco. Inside the 200-year old restored barn are handcrafted furniture and accessories plus hundreds of one-of-a-kind heirloom gift items—pottery, wrought iron, quilts, handmade brooms and
baskets, mesquite shepherd’s lamps, wooden cutting boards and
spoons, oil lamps, beeswax candles, natural soaps plus specialty foods
and Gristmill Baking Mixes. Enjoy lunch at Cafe Homestead.
Next we’ll travel into Waco for time at Chip & Joanna’s incredible
Magnolia Market & Silos histor ic shopping ar eas as featur ed on
HGTV’s Fixer Upper. You’ll be amazed at the insight they had fixing
up an old grain depot and converting it into a must-see shopping experience. Ending our day will be a visit to the Dr. Pepper Museum for ice
cream floats. Just an hour away is historic Granbury and our home for
the next two nights overlooking Lake Granbury.
Day 2 and we ar e off to Glen Rose and the adventur e-filled
Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. Escape the ever yday, and explor e the
rugged beauty of Fossil Rim Wildlife Center. Here you will discover a
sanctuary for endangered species. Their goal is promoting the preservation and procreation of threatened/endangered species. After lunch,
the short drive to the Historic Granbury Square for exploring and
shopping with time at our hotel prior to our evening extravaganza.
This evening, a great dinner followed by lower reserved seating for
“The Promise”. The Promise is a one-of-a-kind musical production
performed annually at the Texas Amphitheater in Glen Rose, Texas. It
combines a 150-person cast and crew, live animals, historically
accurate costumes, and breath-taking lights, sound and special effects,
all of which tell the story of the life of Jesus Christ in modern familyfriendly fashion. Patrons have called it a "life-changing experience",
"an outstanding performance", and a "very inspirational" presentation
for all audiences. Since its start in 1989, The Promise remains the
largest permanent outdoor amphitheater in the State of Texas.
It’s time to start heading back east on Day 3 but not before a stop
in Clifton, the “Norwegian Capital of Texas.” Since 1954, the awardwinning Bosque Museum has been a “must see” destination for anyone wishing to better experience the rich and diverse history of Clifton and Bosque County. One of the museum’s most popular attractions has been the permanent “Horn Shelter Exhibit.” The exhibit documents visually the earliest known inhabitants of Bosque County, dating back 11,200 years.
All this and more awaits us on this adventure “Deep In the Heart
of Texas!” We look forward to you joining us on this exclusive Fall
motorcoach tour with the Hometown Travelers.
