Lemesos Newsletter - May 2015 Dear Friends and Colleagues, This month we celebrate two years of the Lemesos Newsletter. During this time we tried to bring Lemesos town and district - closer to you by including information about places and events, as well as new additions to what our area has to offer. We hope that we made you love this place a bit more. . One thing, though, is for sure. Lemesos becomes better every day. With this newsletter we take to the countryside, which in spring time is at its best! The flower of the month Ruta chalepensis – Fringed Rue- Πήανος, Απήγανο Foetid-smelling indigenous subshrub flowering in February to May. It occurs on rocky places and cliffs – Akamas, Pentadaktylos mountain range, Germasogeia and elsewhere (0-800m alt.). Native to Mediterranean countries and Atlantic islands. A lowdemanding species that thrives on all types of well-drained soils. The medicinal properties of this plant were well known to the ancient Greeks. It was used as an antidote for “aconite” poisoning. Ancient writer Athenaeus Naucratitus (end of 2nd A.D. – beginning of 3rd A.D.) describes the tyrant Clearchus, who forcibly put to death many persons, giving most of them aconite to drink. Those who ate rue beforehand were not at least injured by drinking aconite. Treis Elies Ecovillage A new project is born in the little village of Treis Elies. The very first Eco Village. A group of people with ambition to create a project that caters to a healthy and sustainable lifestyle is responsible for this new idea. Their combined knowledge in agriculture, tourism, education, biology, architecture, environmental engineering etc is their greatest asset; they aim towards a healthy living for locals and visitors while educating the local population. They already attracted young people to the village, which will give new life and new sources to the place by introducing biological cultivations and the organised cleaning of the area. The small cafeneion of the village is now a station for breakfast for tourists as the nearby nature trail attracts hikers. Their plans are ambitious and include Ecofarm, Ecohotel, Ecospa, Eco camping etc. More information at their facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/EcovillageTrisElies (Photo from Treis Elies Ecovillage Facebook site) Hiking? Yes, please! Treis Elies Nature Trail The trail near Treis Elies village is part of a longer trail known as Venetian Bridges. It’s only 2.5 kilometers long, linear and of medium difficulty to walk. The flora is especially beautiful and interesting in spring months. This year it was included in the 2nd Cyprus walking Festival. (Photos : George Economides, tourist guide , during the 2nd Cyprus Walking Festival) Mesa Potamos: Water Falls and Monastery Mesa Potamos is a place known to many Limassolians as a place where we had our school excursions many years ago. A great place in the forest with picnic places, and a water fall that was the highlight of the excursion. Nearby was a small chapel dedicated to Timios Prodromos - John the Baptist. Today, the visitors of Mesa Potamos will thankfully still find the beautiful small waterfall, the picnic place where one can make a souvla, but also something more to visit: The Monastery of Timios Prodromos. In the peacefulness of this forest, next to the small chapel of our childhood, exists now a monastery where ten monks have dedicated their lives.
