Annual Report - South County Habitat for Humanity

FRAMING THE FUTURE
OF SOUTH COUNTY
ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014
ABOUT US
“Construction can be accomplished only
when we have volunteers to do the work.”
FROM THE
PRESIDENT
MISSION
The mission of South County Habitat for Humanity is to
contribute to the elimination of substandard housing by
creating decent homes in partnership with people in need.
HABITAT’S REACH ACROSS
WASHINGTON COUNTY
SCHH HISTORY
South County Habitat for Humanity (SCHH) was founded in
1990 as an affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International.
Ted Seymour, one of the original incorporators, was
named the first Executive Director. SCHH dedicated its
first home in 1992 and in 1994 completed a Blitz Build of
two homes in Charlestown in the space of a week. Later in
1994 the SCHH-URI partnership was formalized when the
URI Campus Chapter was established. The first womenbuilt house in 1997 recruited many women volunteers,
some of whom still serve on the Women’s Crew.
In 2003, Ted Seymour retired and Lou Raymond, who
first volunteered with SCHH on the 1994 Blitz Build, was
selected as Executive Director. In 2007, the completion
of the Operations Center and the establishment of a
Habitat ReStore put SCHH on a firm financial footing.
SCHH has continued to expand. Now, after 24 years
in operation, SCHH has completed 45 homes and
given a hand up to 54 South County families.

Planned Homes
South County Habitat for Humanity is a bunch of
do-gooders who build houses and sell them with minimal down
payments on interest-free loans to people who would not
otherwise qualify for a home mortgage! The Merriam-Webster
Dictionary describes a do-gooder as “an earnest often naïve
humanitarian or reformer.” We are earnest humanitarians,
but we are not naïve! We contribute to the elimination of
substandard housing by creating decent homes in partnership
with people in need. We follow a business plan that would
be totally unacceptable to a for-profit business, but fits our
mission nicely. We are proud to be do-gooders, guided by
God’s hand, and we follow our mission enthusiastically!
number of volunteer hours has increased by 13.45%. In
the ReStore alone, the number of volunteers has gone
up 7.9% and the number of hours has gone up 6.5%.
SCHH has had an extremely successful 2013-2014 Fiscal
Year. Home construction, lot purchases, volunteer hours,
URI student participation, and ReStore sales have all had
remarkable increases over the previous fiscal year.
The ReStore made great strides, as it does every year. While
expenses did not increase, revenues from ReStore sales
increased 20.5% and revenues from scrap metal sales increased
50.64%. 1,156 tons of materials have been diverted from
landfills since the ReStore opened. Donors win, buyers win,
homeowners win, and the environment wins with ReStore!
Our capacity to build homes has increased to 3-4 homes per
year, up from 1-2. Although a cold and snowy winter caused
major delays, four homes are currently under construction
and will be completed in the 2014-2015 Fiscal Year. One
home was purchased back from a homeowner and three
lots were purchased, one in Exeter and two in Charlestown.
Our tithe to Habitat for Humanity International resulted in
homes being built for seven families in other countries.
Construction can be accomplished only when we have
volunteers to do the work. The total number of volunteers
in all capacities has increased by 46.25% and the total
Our partnership with the University of Rhode Island community
continued to be strong, as shown by donations, student volunteer
hours on the home builds, and the bond between us. The
Pound the Pavement fundraiser grew out of 2013’s walk-athon. Nearly 300 participants ran, walked, or moseyed in the
sanctioned 5K event on the URI campus. Greek Life, the URI
Habitat Chapter, URI athletic teams, and the URI community
raised a total of $103,350, including a $50,000 alumni match.
Thank you for being a do-gooder and joining SCHH in
Building Houses, Building Hope!
Sincerely,
Board President

South County Habitat for Humanity | Annual Report | 2013-2014
Our Board president, Carol Kadamus, pointed out in her letter
how well South County Habitat is doing these days. We got
here with good Board leadership, a dedicated staff, some
of the world’s best volunteers and plenty of blessings. It is
good to take a moment to enjoy our accomplishments of the
last year and to say “thanks” to a very gracious God.
As an organization, we are financially strong and well positioned
to continue our growth, but as always there are many challenges
to be mastered. It is becoming more and more difficult to keep
our homes affordable. Even though we had a very good year
recruiting new volunteers we still do not have enough for the
ambitious building schedule we would like to maintain. Many
of the traditional funding sources no longer exist or are not
as robust as in the past. Many of our early homeowners are
starting to face the expenses associated with aging homes and
may need some assistance. And, local poverty is becoming
deeper and more pervasive than any time in recent memory.
As we frame the future, I have great confidence in the
people that are South County Habitat. I have great optimism
because I am surrounded by people who put their faith
into action day by day and week by week. I am constantly
amazed by what can be accomplished by the shear
persistence demonstrated by this group that was called to
be the hands of our loving God—and they answered.
Sincerely,
Executive Director
We certainly have the will to meet and overcome the challenges—
that has been our history. Of course we cannot sit on our laurels
more than a moment or two and then we must forge ahead.
The plans, strategies and actions we take today determine the
future health of our organization and the success of our mission
in the tomorrows to come. Our Board of Directors will need to
balance prudence and boldness as they make the decisions
that will set our course. And we, the members of South County
Habitat will be asked to demonstrate and to continue the love
and passion for mission that has made us what we are today.
