i FREDONIA COLLEGE FOUNDATION A NNUAL REP O RT 2 0 1 5 MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIR I am very pleased to assume the role as board chairman of the Fredonia College Foundation. I would like to take a moment to thank my predecessor, Richard S. Johnson, whose two-year term as chair concluded at the end of 2015. It is a tremendous honor to lead a team focused on enhancing and expanding the educational opportunities for Fredonia’s students. We have seen and heard the challenges facing higher education throughout Western New York. Shifting demographics, evolving curriculum and technology, and challenging local economies, are putting a premium on the prospective student population. In these changing times, it is more important than ever that we work collaboratively to make the Fredonia experience attainable and sustainable through the work of the foundation. Fredonia certainly has the assets in place to compete in the modern higher education marketplace. The multi-million dollar expansion of the Michael C. Rockefeller Arts Center is the first major upgrade of the facility since it opened in 1969. Sixteen naming-rights options have been purchased so far, indicating the high level of interest from alumni to be a part of this exciting new chapter in Fredonia’s story. The Rockefeller addition and the construction of the Science Center – one of the best equipped undergrad science centers in the nation - are fine examples of the strong collaboration between the university and the foundation. With our physical structures improving, our core mission continues to be funding student scholarships. The number of endowments managed by the foundation grew by 12 last year, and is currently at 445. Just over $975,000 was spent on scholarships, awards, and academic programs in 2015-16. The endowment’s market value grew to $29.3 million at the end of the 2015-16 fiscal year. Despite the steady growth, there’s still plenty of work to do. The foundation is focused on increasing the participation level of alumni contributions, as the need is greater than ever. To that end, we are being more strategic in our planning of major outreach events and working to engage younger alumni through social media and digital campaigns. I would also like to welcome new board members who arrived in 2015. Fredonia alumnus Karl Holz is new to the board, but certainly a familiar face. Mr. Holz is president of New Vacation Operations and Disney Cruise Line, and received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Fredonia Alumni Association in 2005. Michael Schiavone is a 1978 Fredonia graduate, and is a Senior Partner at Lipsitz Green Scime Cambria, LLP in Buffalo. Mr. Schiavone served on the foundation board in the past, but was newly elected in 2015 for another term. Also joining the foundation board is Elizabeth Star. She and her husband, Stanley Star, gifted the Franklin Properties in Dunkirk to the foundation. I know first-hand how scholarship opportunities can profoundly assist young minds in achieving their career goals. My successes are a direct result of Fredonia’s professors and generosity. I was one of the first in my family to go to college. I was fortunate enough to receive a scholarship to defer some of the cost. Years later, by serving as chair of the Fredonia College Foundation, I have the opportunity to give back to the university that has shaped critical thinking in the minds of young adults for almost 200 years. Dennis Costello, Chairman President Virginia Horvath and Senior Class President Stephanie Willis display a photograph of the outdoor pavilion stage, the 2016 class gift. MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT The work of the Fredonia College Foundation continues to have a profound impact on our students. With every gift – regardless of size – these students have more opportunities to succeed at Fredonia and in life. This annual report highlights the many ways Fredonia alumni and friends, acting individually or collectively, build upon the university’s strengths. In the past year, generous donors have added 12 more endowments and grown the endowment’s market value to $29.3 million. This steady growth is the result of the Fredonia College Foundation implementing a sound financial strategy to increase giving levels. New initiatives are underway to engage more of the ever-growing family of alumni. For example, this fall you will see #FREDlanthropy appear on the university’s website and social media. You can be part of this new venture and join in the excitement when it is unveiled, as younger alumni take a more active role in philanthropy. As another academic year begins, thank you – alumni, community and business leaders – for your contributions to our efforts. Through your generosity, the campus has the ability to develop students into skilled, connected, creative, and responsible citizens and professionals. Virginia S. Horvath, Ph.D. President ANNUAL REPORT 2015 1 2 DALLAS K. BEAL LEGACY SOCIETY The Dallas K. The following gift plans are just a few examples that offer tax savings and other advantages to donors. Bequests: Leave Fredonia a percentage of your estate. Or, make a bequest of money or a particular piece of property. Securities: Give stocks that have increased greatly in value, particularly those producing a low yield. If you have owned them longer than one year, you will pay no capital gains tax on the transaction, and you can deduct the full fair market value. Retirement Plan Assets: Your most efficient estate planning option may be leaving all or a portion of your retirement plan to charity, because tax laws often subject these assets to the highest combined income and estate taxes upon death. Many techniques can be used to avoid combined tax rates of nearly 65 percent. At the same time, you can pass more tax-favored assets to your family. Charitable Gift Annuity: This is a simple contract between you and *Deceased Fredonia that pays you a fixed dollar amount for your lifetime. The older FREDONIA COLLEGE FOUNDATION you are, the higher your annuity rate. If you use appreciated property to fund the gift annuity, you will escape the capital gains tax on the gift portion of the transaction. Plus, you are able to spread the remaining capital gains tax over your lifetime. You also receive a partial income tax deduction. Real Estate: This is a simple donation if you own property that is not mortgaged, has appreciated in value, and you no longer need or use. You can deduct the fair market value of your gift and avoid all capital gains taxes. Plus, you have removed that asset from your taxable estate. Life Insurance: Rather than cancel policies you no longer need, you could name Fredonia as the beneficiary, or simply donate the policies outright. For more information on these and other ways to leave a legacy at Fredonia, visit plannedgiving.fredonia.edu. 3 A star is born How do you want to be remembered? It’s not a question that is pondered as part of our daily routine. That is, until a lifealtering event occurs. A year ago, I was told I had terminal cancer. Such news makes one start looking at life very differently. That daily routine is no longer routine, and you start to consider things you may never have thought of before. But let’s rewind a bit. In the 1990s, I was enjoying a successful career as a public relations practitioner in Buffalo, N.Y. Occasionally, I had the opportunity to host interns from local colleges who were seeking public relations degrees. It was a task I enjoyed immensely, so much so that I decided I wanted to mentor full time. With my professional background, I felt I could make a difference in the lives of college students. So I went to graduate school, after which I began teaching parttime at night while still working during the day. The hard work paid off. In 2002, I was given an opportunity for which I will always be thankful. The State University of New York at Fredonia hired me as an assistant professor to grow its new Public Relations major. In the past 14 years, Fredonia has grown a program that we believe is second to none in New York State, and neighboring states for that matter. The present enrollment has tripled from the first class of 42 students, making Public Relations the largest major of six in the Department of Communication. Our graduates have gone on to wonderful careers coast to coast, ranging from small nonprofit organizations to large public relations firms. Many of them have kept us updated on their success and tell us about the difference Fredonia made in their lives. I am as proud of them as if they were my own sons and daughters. Teaching has fulfilled my hope of making a difference. Making a difference is something I have tried to pass on to my students, as well. At graduation, I have given each of the 2,500-plus students who has gone through our program a starfish along with a story. The story tells about a child who threw starfish back into the ocean in order to save them and make a difference, even if that difference affected only one starfish at a time. Many students have told me years later that they still have their starfish and are striving to make a difference of their own. Ann Carden, Associate Professor, Department of Communication Now, back to the present. With my prognosis, I know my time teaching is limited. I began wondering how I could continue to make a difference after I’m no longer in the classroom. That’s when I decided to endow a scholarship. Even though Public Relations is the largest major in the department, there are no scholarships specifically for public relations students. So the Ann Reynolds Carden Public Relations "Star" Award was born. It will be presented to outstanding Public Relations students who have a plan to make a difference in the world with their degree from Fredonia. Setting it up couldn’t have been easier. The Fredonia College Foundation guided me through the simple process, and it took only five minutes to name Fredonia as a beneficiary on one of my retirement funds. So, that leads me back to the question I posed at the beginning: How do you want to be remembered? I’ve taken the time to think about that and have come up with an answer for my own legacy: I want to be remembered as someone who has made a difference, especially in the lives of Fredonia students – yesterday, today, and tomorrow. Take, for instance, Jeffrey Martin. A 2016 Fredonia graduate who majored in Biochemistry, he will continue his education this fall in the Ph.D. program at Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Meanwhile, Aman Kumar, a 2016 graduate who studied Biology, will begin studies at Touro College of Dental Medicine at New York Medical College. One year ago, Biology major Kaitlyn Crossan enrolled at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. Danielle Hindes, ’14, who studied Molecular Genetics, entered the Ph.D. program in Immunology and Infectious Diseases at the State University of New York at Albany. Poised to follow in their footsteps is Arielys, a senior Physics and Molecular Genetics major. While their academic concentrations vary, Arielys shares one key experience with these graduates: summer research on campus. Select students work alongside a faculty member in the Department of Biology on specific research. These experiences wouldn’t be possible without individual fellowships that provide a stipend for each student and cover the cost of research supplies and equipment purchases. Since 1998, the Holmberg Foundation has funded research fellowships for undergraduate and graduate students. For many years, the foundation provided $15,000 to the Fredonia College Foundation to support five students each summer. Today, with the addition of the Joseph and Jane (Schuster) Falcone Biology Endowment for Scholarship and Research, the Constantine Barker Memorial Fund, the Yunghans-Dietter Research Award and a larger appropriation from the Holmberg Foundation, the department has awarded more fellowships. “This year we had an increased number of applications and funded 11,” said Patricia Astry, department chair. “We are grateful to our benefactors for their generous support of this program.” Ms. Kathryn S. Dr. Quintyne was quickly impressed with her research prowess. “From my point of view, she has a very strong sense of curiosity, about Molecular Biology in general, and in her time in the lab she’s had so far, she really has shown herself to be very skilled and also has a high level of inquisitiveness about her project,” he said. Arielys plans to pursue biomedical engineering research in graduate school. “The aspects of research that appeal to me the most would have to be the hands-on involvement, understanding the material and actually obtaining results that might advance research on a global scale,” she said. Critical and independent thinking, creativity and discovery are directly connected to research, Chair Astry said, and all are extremely important skills for students setting their sights on graduate or professional schools. Performing research also seems to help students do better in their classes, even if the research didn’t overlap with the course material, she added. Student research under the mentorship of a faculty member may lead to being published in a research journal – a very impressive accomplishment for medical schools and graduate school committees to consider. Malachi Blundon, ’10, ’12, was awarded a research fellowship as an undergraduate as a Molecular Genetics major and another as a graduate student in Biology. “These summer experiences were an integral part of my research success at Fredonia and my preparation into graduate school at Carnegie Mellon University,” added Malachi, a Ph.D. candidate in Cell and Developmental Biology. Each of their four children developed severe hearing loss as a result of a childhood illness. The Sams sought assistance from Dr. Henry Youngerman, who founded and was the first chair of what is known today as the Communication Disorders and Sciences department at Fredonia. They wanted their children – Barbara, Grace, Charles and Robert – to attend public school. What they didn’t want was enrolling their children in an institution solely designated for the hearing impaired. Back in the 1950s and ‘60s, many public schools didn’t serve hearing impaired students, but the Sams insisted that their children be “mainstreamed” into regular classrooms. Their hard work and diligence led to the hiring of what is now known as a speech-language pathologist in the Fredonia Central School District. Not only was their heart in the right place, doing what they thought was the right thing was clearly affirmed by the end result. Their children were successful in public school and went on to earn college degrees, with Fredonia proud to claim Grace as an alumna. Equally important is that all similarly affected children in Fredonia schools ultimately benefitted from Esau and Susan’s persistence. As they grew up, all four children were taught the value of a strong work ethic by their parents, the second generation in the family’s diversified farming enterprise, A. Sam Farm, which was founded by Albert and Nacima Sam, immigrants who passed through Ellis Island and arrived in Dunkirk in 1910. Esau and Susan’s children grew up in the business and were taught how to work in and communicate with the hearing world. They also learned to be generous and help others, a trait that they witnessed every time their parents opened their hearts and even the family home to those who needed their help, including children of their workers and neighbors recovering from surgery. As a way to “pay it forward,” the children established the Esau A. and Susan S. Sam Family Endowment in 1991 to honor their parents and provide scholarships to students majoring in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. They wanted to help hearing-impaired individuals learn to function in a hearing world. “For 25 years, the Esau A. and Susan A. Sam Family Scholarship has assisted our undergraduate and graduate students with tuition and fees. Mr. and Mrs. Sam's children received services from Dr. Henry Youngerman, who pioneered clinic services at Fredonia, and so the union began,” said Kim Tillery, chair of the Department of Communication Disorders and Sciences. “The Sam family, spanning three generations, are loyal friends to our department and Fredonia by donating items for our department's silent auction and hosting a graduate student gathering at a local restaurant,” Dr. Tillery added. “Their scholarship awards assist our students with rising educational costs.” For Nicole Specht Weber, who earned a B.A. in Communication Disorders and Sciences summa cum laude in 2006 and a M.S. in Speech Language Pathology in 2008 – both from Fredonia – receiving a Sam Family scholarship was an honor – professionally, academically and financially. The award reinforced Nicole’s decision to leave a successful marketing career and pursue her desire to become a speech-language pathologist. “When I was in high school my younger sister was born with Down syndrome and I became fascinated with improving communication in children with developmental disabilities,” said Nicole, who went on to volunteer and shadow at schools to gain a better understanding of what speech-language pathologists do. “I was extremely grateful,” Nicole said of receiving the scholarship that, as of 2016, has been awarded to 45 students. Plaques listing each year’s recipients are displayed outside of the Communication Disorders and Sciences office in Thompson Hall. Today, Nicole, who has worked in schools, clinics, private practice and university settings, is an assistant clinical professor in the State University at Buffalo Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic. She’s also “paying it forward” by supervising and teaching aspiring graduate clinicians. Rockefeller Arts Center. That’s why Ted and his late wife, Gail (Andrews), ’71, created the Gail and Ted DeDee Endowment Fund to help cover, beginning this fall, the wages of students who work behind the scenes at numerous Rockefeller programs and events. He wants students to have opportunities to learn and to be paid for their work experiences at Rockefeller. Along with Gail, who lost her courageous battle against cancer in 2014, they wanted to “pay forward the experience I had with financial assistance to those students who needed it the most while learning about this wonderful career path that has served me so well,” Ted said. Indeed, “wonderful” is no exaggeration. Since graduating from Fredonia, Ted has held highlevel management positions at six other prestigious venues: the Eastman Theatre in Rochester, N.Y.; the Morton H. Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas, Texas; the Tennessee Performing Arts Center and Schermerhorn Symphony Center, both in Nashville, Tenn.; the McCoy Center, in Columbus, Ohio, and Rockefeller at Fredonia. As the President and CEO of the Overture Center, Ted manages seven performances venues and five visual arts galleries and oversees a staff of 60 fulltime employees and a $21 million budget. Over 500 public events a year attract nearly 600,000 patrons. Experiences outside of the classroom at Fredonia provided the foundation for Ted to pursue a career in performing arts management and programming. It was during his sophomore year that Ted, a Music Education major, realized his interest in teaching music had waned. Then he met Clint Norton, the first director of Rockefeller. “I credit Clint for becoming my first mentor and opening up the world of performing arts center management as a viable career path,” Ted said. His last two years at Fredonia were filled with elective courses in theatre and business and “spending as much time as possible learning from Clint and the theatre staff, including Bob McClure and Ted Janello, about opening and managing the new Rockefeller Arts Center.” Ted served on the lighting crew of “The Threepenny Opera,” the first production in the College Theater, now Marvel Theatre, in May 1969, and went on Pamela King Nichols Brian O'Donnell Thomas J. Conte Carol Cameron Larson David R. Larson Ruth E. Seaman Robert Vandemark ANNIVERSARY CIRCLE John Battle to work on lighting crews or serve as an assistant technical director for all theatre, dance and opera performances until he graduated. “There is no doubt my student experience with the opening of the Rockefeller Arts Center and working with Clint Norton and Ted Janello was the inspiration I needed for my career and life’s journey,” Ted said. A couple years after Ted and Gail received degrees in Music Education, Ted was brought back to Fredonia by Dr. Robert Marvel, then Dean of Fine and Performing Arts, as assistant director after Mr. Norton left to build and open another college performing arts center. After Mr. Norton’s successor, Bob D’Angelo, left to build his own performing arts center, Ted was promoted to the top spot. Earnings from the Gail and Ted DeDee Endowment Fund will help support the wages of part-time students working at RAC, according to Jefferson Westwood, director of Rockefeller Arts Center. Students serve as house managers, assistant house managers, technical directors, technical crew members, light shop supervisors, student videographer, accountant/bookkeepers and general office assistants. With the initial gift from the DeDees and three gifts earmarked for the same endowment, earnings are already supporting wages for students interested in careers in performing arts management. Ted also made the first naming gift for the Rockefeller expansion and renovation project. RAC’s administrative offices will be known as the Gail and Ted DeDee Administrative Offices. Since its opening more than 40 years ago, Rockefeller has helped to launch the careers of countless professionals in the fine and performing arts. “It is difficult to put into words the profound positive influence that these kinds of work experiences have on young people,” Mr. Westwood explained. Though Fredonia offers many great courses and instructors, he said, “it’s the out-of-class learning experiences such as RAC provides to its student employees that can truly prepare and propel them into fulfilling careers in performing arts management.” Ted and Gail returned to their alma mater in 2013, when Ted received the Outstanding Achievement Award from the Fredonia Alumni Foundation. During that visit, Ted encouraged students to seek out the same types of opportunities he was able to experience. Duane D. Braun Ruth E.
