Montefiore’s 130th Anniversary
Celebration, “A Grand Affair” – held on
Sunday, June 9, 2013 – truly lived up to
its name.
Entertainer extraordinaire Michael
Cavanaugh performed to the sold-out crowd
honoring Montefiore’s distinguished
past board chairs: Alvin Barkley, Joel
Garver, Lois Goodman, Harley Gross,
Andrew Hoffmann, Susan Hurwitz, Hal
Myers, Elmer Paull, Donald Scherzer,
Harvey Siegel, Sally Wertheim and
Darrell Young – which included a heartwarming video.
Honorary co-chair Elaine Rocker,
co-chairs Elaine Gilbert, Margo Vinney,
Joyce Wald and Judy Willensky created
the memorable evening which helped
raise $400,000 for the Maltz Hospice
and Palliative Care Pavilion – a lifeaffirming hospice. (See photos from the

To find out about our recent groundbreaking ceremony
for the Maltz Hospice and Palliative Care Pavilion, see page 10.
I hope you and your family
are doing well and enjoying
the last remaining weeks of
summer. We have much to be
grateful for this year and have
much more to share with you in
the year ahead.
Montefiore and The Rehabilitation
Pavilion at The Weils have both received the
highest possible rating of five stars in U.S.
News & World Report’s fifth annual Best
Nursing Homes of 2013. This rating reflects
the dedication and expertise of our clinical
staff members.
As you can see by the photos at left, our
130th Anniversary Celebration, “A Grand
Affair” was a huge success and helped us raise
over $400,000 toward the final dollars to build
the Maltz Hospice and Palliative Care Pavilion.
It truly was a “Grand Affair!”
Over 100 guests joined us at the
Maltz Hospice and Palliative Care Pavilion
groundbreaking ceremony for the new 10,000
square foot hospice pavilion – providing
a new home for the Vinney Hospice and
Palliative Care program. Opening is planned in
summer 2014.
Due to the success of The Willensky
Residence, our new assisted living memory
care pavilion, we are expanding and
renovating space in the adjacent wing to
accommodate ten additional suites with seven
of the suites already reserved. Construction
will begin this fall with completion by the end
of the year.
Along with all nursing homes in Ohio,
Montefiore will be participating in the
statewide Ohio Long-Term Care Facility
Resident Satisfaction Survey. (See page 2.)
If you have any questions about the survey,
please call Mark Weiss, administrator, at
216.910.2640.
In June, Montefiore, in partnership
with Bikur Cholim of Cleveland, hosted an
Orthodox Men’s Health Fair to great success
with over 150 men who received various
health screenings. We are already planning
one for next year.
Wishing you and yours a happy
and healthy New Year.

Idol
Smiles Abound with Junior Volunteers!
by Erlein Tacastacas, Cadkin Youth Leadership Intern
For many young people, “summer”
is synonymous with 75 days of freedom
from homework assignments, but
some teenagers use the season to open
themselves up to new experiences, by
which to grow and learn. Such was the
case at Montefiore, where as many as 125
new and returning junior volunteers (ages
12-18) graciously offered their time, talent
and services to Montefiore, developing
skills such as patience and diligence and
enriching the lives of our residents.
The opportunities for junior
volunteers to serve at Montefiore are
wonderfully diverse; from folding freshly
washed linen with the laundry staff to
reading trivia with residents in the outdoor
courtyard to meticulously filing documents
in the office. Through all of these
activities, the strong spirit and remarkable
enthusiasm of the junior volunteers shone
through in unexpected situations such
as outdoor picnic cancellations due to
rain and even a tornado warning, as they
willingly accepted challenging tasks and
prioritized the needs of the residents.
Junior volunteers are not only
conscientious and hardworking; they are
also charismatic and artistically gifted.
They grabbed the spotlight to showcase
their talents at the annual Montefiore
Idol Talent Show on Thursday, July 25. The
acts, which ranged from piano sonatas
to poetry reading to vocal performances,
earned much-deserved praise from the
judges, including Board Chair Steve
Willensky, resident Donna Rosen and
Posh Nosh Supervisor Allison DiMichele,
who, after careful deliberation, awarded
the title of Montefiore Idol 2013 to Katie
Holbury, a 12th grader at Beaumont,
for her rendition of “The Cup Song.”
Congratulations Katie!
Students around the community
also had the opportunity to volunteer
with camps and organizations that
visited this summer. High school students
from Camp Wise and also the Mandel
JCC’s J-Teen Camp visited several times
to offer their sunny smiles and amusing
anecdotes to residents they chatted with
in the courtyard. Camp SAY high school
students seeking to strengthen youth in
communities were also a great help with
the laundry staff and wonderful company
for the residents.
No amount of volunteer work is too
small and all service, both conspicuous
and subtle alike, was recognized during
the culmination of this summer’s junior
volunteer program. The annual Junior
Volunteer Recognition was held on
Thursday, August 15 and celebrated the
many hours of service junior volunteers
provided at Montefiore. This year’s theme,
“Junior Volunteers Are the Sweetest!”
offered a tribute to the kindness,
generosity and happiness they bring
to Montefiore and The Weils. It was an
evening to remember!
As always, a Montefiore Junior
Volunteer of the Year was recognized, and
this year it was Julia Ullman, a senior at
Hawken School. Julia’s dedication, maturity
and responsibility since 2008 made her a
deserving recipient. Julia is the daughter of
Susan and Harlan Ullman of Pepper Pike.
The Weils Junior Volunteer of
the Year, Austin Barr, was recognized
for his delightful qualities. Austin will
be a freshman this fall and has been
volunteering since 2010. Austin is the son
of Kelly and David Barr of Chagrin Falls.
“The Fabulous Five” were also
honored for their exemplary service: Anna
Marie Anthony, 11th grade, Beaumont;
Daniel Branch, 10th grade,Twinsburg
High School; Rebecca Kuang, 12th grade,
Beachwood High School; Nimisha Rajesh,
10th grade, Orange High School; and
Brandon Rock, 10th grade, Solon High
School. Congratulations to all!
A very special thank you to The Fannie
and Milly Cadkin Endowment Fund of
The Montefiore Foundation for making it
all possible!

Montefiore Residents
to Participate in
Statewide Survey
We are pleased to announce Montefiore’s
participation in the statewide Ohio Long-Term
Care Facility Resident Satisfaction Survey.
This fall and winter, every nursing home
and residential care facility in the state will
participate. The results from the satisfaction
survey will be available to us so we can learn
about what we do well and what we could do
better.
This year’s results will be posted on the
internet in the Ohio Long-Term Care Consumer
Guide (www.ltc.ohio.gov) to give consumers
the opportunity to find out how residents feel
about each facility.
Trained interviewers from Vital Research
will interview a sample of our residents. The
interviews will take approximately 15-20
minutes to complete and will be confidential.
The survey is done with a random sampling
of residents. If your family member is not
selected for the survey process, or is unable
to participate, please feel free to share your
opinions with administration, nursing, or other
department staff, as needed. Your opinions
are important to us.
If you have any questions about the
statewide survey, please call Mark Weiss,
Administrator, at 216.910.2640 or Clara Choi at
Vital Research, LLC, 888.848.2555.
Auxiliary Luncheon Enjoyed by All!
At the Installation Luncheon
of the Montefiore Auxiliary in late
June, officers both outgoing and
incoming, were recognized for their
exemplary contributions to Montefiore.
Marilyn Weinberg was installed as the
organization’s new president and in her
inaugural speech she emphasized the
need for members to remember that
everything they do should focus on the
residents. She said, “It is important that
we work together with each other, with
the staff and with the Montefiore board
because we are all concerned about the
welfare of our residents.”
The ceremony also paid tribute
to the uniqueness of each officer by
comparing her or him to a different
herb. Whether it is zesty chives, longlasting dill or a harmonious partnership
of oregano and basil, each officer has
a unique ingredient to contribute in
ensuring the organization’s success.
Congratulations to Marilyn and
new and returning officers, including:
Claire Nash, executive vice president;
Rhoda Seifert, immediate past president
and fundraising chair; Andy Havas,
finance chair; Linda Mintz, MoMart
Gift Shop chair; Phyllis Buchler and
Anita Weinberg, membership co-chairs;
Alice R. Sayre, Parliamentarian; Shirley
Basch, corresponding secretary; and
Peggy Behrens, Darla Gordon and Mary
Iammarino, programming co-chairs.
Pianist Cliff Habian entertained us
with his musical talents by “tickling the
ivories” on our beautiful new babygrand piano generously donated by
Marjorie Wolinsky. Many thanks to our
outstanding programming co-chairs:
Peggy Behrens, Darla Gordon and Mary
Iammarino for planning such a great

MONTEFIORE INVITES YOU TO OUR
F
L CHA
FOLLOW YOUR HEART
A well-known writer
advised: If you want your life
to take on meaning, paint a
picture of what you want…and
walk in! In other words, what’s
stopping us from giving our
lives a purpose and to have real
energy for living?
The early Zionists had the most menial
jobs: laundry, tending chicken coops, the
daily grind of fields and vineyards. Yet, they
brought about the image and attitude of a
new kind of Jew: unafraid, ready for armed
defense if necessary and ready to take on
any task or adversary. In other words, they
felt great purpose in what they did, despite
whatever tedium or hard labor was involved
and they built a great army, great spirit and
a great State!
We know in our hearts what we truly
enjoy doing, what we truly hope for…but
we put these dreams off as “unrealistic,”
“not possible,” “too expensive” or any
number of self-defeating impulses. We have
to give ourselves a chance! Take the jump
and begin to self-actualize.
Your dream is precious: take it, go for it.
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are
great occasions for self-development – in so
many ways. Don’t treat them as just a “trip
to synagogue!” Make it an opportunity to
discover the unuttered hopes within. We
must not be afraid.
“Hitch your wagon to a star,” declared
one of our great American writers. Follow
your heart and discover the possibilities that
are yours.
A most rewarding and hopeful New Year
to all!
“L’Shana Tova Tikatevu!”
May all of us be written in God’s Book of Life
for health and blessing!

D Montefiore Breaks Ground For Maltz
Hospice and Palliative Care Pavilion
Montefiore recently broke ground for
its new Maltz Hospice and Palliative Care
Pavilion on their Beachwood campus. This
breathtaking new addition fulfills a muchneeded service for families facing end-oflife issues.
The ceremony featured remarks from
Lauren Rock, Montefiore president and
CEO; Milton Maltz, whose lead gift from
the Maltz Family Foundation, named
the pavilion; Steven Willensky, chair,
Montefiore board of directors, Diane
Korman, director of Vinney Hospice and
Palliative Care of Montefiore and City of
Beachwood Mayor Merle Gorden.
“With this magnificent new hospice
and palliative care pavilion, we will be able
to better serve the growing needs of our
community – offering our compassionate
care in a setting worthy of the hospice
services we offer,” said Rock. “This project
has been a vision of ours for several years
and we are elated that on this remarkable
day, this dream has come true.”
The 10,000 square foot project,
designed by C.C. Hodgson Architectural

square feet added to our existing
building and 3,000 square feet of which
will be renovated space. The 12-bed
pavilion will offer living rooms, dining
areas and a servery, an interactive
children’s play area, a consultation room
that doubles as an overnight option
for families and a meditation room
for quiet contemplation. Art, music,
massage, and Reiki therapies will be
offered throughout the pavilion and/or
in patient rooms and a meeting room
will be used for private family gatherings
and by bereavement support groups
and volunteers. With its own separate
entrance and parking spaces, the pavilion
will welcome family and friends visiting
loved ones any time of the day or night.
“It’s going to be a place of comfort,
a place to ease the pain, both physical
and in the heart – a place to have a last
dance to “our song” – and a safe haven
to finally say those words that may have
eluded us all our lives: “Thank you, I’m
sorry, I love you,” expressed Willensky.

THREE MONTHS AND COUNTING!
As I write this letter, it has only been three
short months since I came on board as your
Development Director. I am both honored and
humbled by the opportunity to serve in this
capacity. I have just begun to see the depth of
this marvelous organization. I am inspired by
the work of the staff, the leadership, our board
of directors and the commitment and love of
our families. I have met truly extraordinary
people and been welcomed by everyone
throughout the building. Thank you so much to
each of you who have been so gracious.
I have had the opportunity to attend the
130th gala, hospice groundbreaking, a beautiful
Auxiliary Installation luncheon, an annual
meeting and several heartwarming services lead
by Rabbi Chazin. It has been an amazing three
months. I can only begin to imagine what the
next months and years hold.
My hope for the coming months is to have
the opportunity to meet many of you; the
residents, family and friends of Montefiore.
It is each of you who make Montefiore the
warm and welcoming place that it is. It is your
commitment, dedication, volunteerism and
charitable giving that provides the resources for
us to support our residents.
Please take the time to say hello either
via email, phone or in person. It would be my
pleasure to get to know you. Feel free to e-mail
me at drothschild@montefiorecare.org or call
me at 216.910.2633.
Thank you for welcoming me in such a
dynamic and meaningful way.
My best,
Debbie
