Age Eligibility: Athletes must be at least eight years old to compete in Special
Olympics. (Please see definition of eligibility attached.)
Applications for Participation: The application for participation, as well as the
release form, must be competed, signed, and dated for each athlete to be
officially registered with Special Olympics. These forms are available from
SODC office and should be sent together to SODC prior to the start of
training. The application or participation must be completed by someone
who is familiar with the athlete’s medical history and signed by a physician.
The release form must be completed by the parent, guardian, or adult
athlete (if own legal guardian). Each from will need to be updated every
three years. Please see the enclosed instruction sheet and new form. It is
important to note that SODC will not accept other organization’s medical
forms as attachments to the new form. Again, these forms can be obtained
through Special Olympics’ office by calling 336-242-2959. This form must be
on file with SODC before any training begins.
Insurance (secondary): Insurance is provided for officially registered athletes
during training and competition to supplement the family’s insurance, if
needed. Both forms listed above must be on file and current with SODC to
be officially registered.
Intent to Participate: This form must be completed and include the (legal)
names and other information requested for all your athletes who will
participate in any phase of Special Olympics . We ask when registering
students to please use their legal names, not nick names . This will allow our
office to let you know who will need a medical form and can be working on
getting it before Spring Games. The registration for this form can be
completed and emailed to Mary Ann Brown. The blank intent form was
emailed to you as a separate attachment . Please keep a copy for your
records. If other athletes are added to your group during the year, you may
submit additional information on new athletes by writing UPDATED on the
form and sending a copy to SODC.
Buddies: Buddies will not be automatically provided at the games. You must
request them and even then, all requests may not be filled, but the host
school will make every effort to fill the request.

the athletes they are assigned to.
50 Meter Run & 100 Meter Run
·
All runners shall start behind the start line.
·
A runner completes the race when his torso crosses the
finish line.
·
A runner shall be liable for disqualification if he/she
interferes, obstructs, or gains an advantage over another
runner(s).
·
The starter shall give each competitor a chance to do his/
her best by:
- Giving the competitors ample time to settle down after
taking their marks
- Starting the sequence over if any runner is off-balance
- Not holding the runners too long after the set signal.
50 Meter Walk & 100 Meter Walk
·
Athletes start behind the start line.
·
Athletes begin walking at the sound of the starter and must
maintain one foot in touch with the ground at all times.
·
Athletes will walk the entire distance and may not receive
any assistance.
Important
** Athletes can only pick to be in running events or walking
events. They cannot do both. **
Running Long Jump
·
Athletes run to the take-off line and then jump into the
jumping pit.
·
Athletes must be able to jump a minimum of one meter.
·
Measurements will be taken from the take-off line to the
closest impression made by the athlete.
Standing Long Jump
·
Competitors shall start with both feet on the designated
take-off line.
·
When starting, competitors toes shall be behind the takeoff line.
·
If using a mat, it should be long enough to include both
take-off and landing areas, and the mat must be secured
safely to the surface to prevent slipping.
·
A competitor shall be allowed three non-consecutive
jumps and the athletes best jump will be used for scoring.
·
Distance will be measured from the closest impression on
the landing area made by any part of the body including
arms or hands to the take-off line.
·
Measurements are taken from the front of the take-off line.
·
When possible, it is strongly suggested that the standing
long jump event be conducted in sand filled jumping pits.
Softball Throw
·
A 3.0 centimeter (11 3/4 in.) circumference softball shall be
used.
·
Competitor may use any type of throw.
·
Each competitor shall be allowed 3 nonconsecutive
throws.
·
The longest measurement of the three throws will be used
for scoring.
·
Throws will be measured from the inner edge of the arched
throwing restraint line.
Important
Because we have so many wanting to do the softball throw we encourage you to ask your students to try something
different. (When you have over 400 athletes doing softball
throw this really backs-up all our groups) Softball Throw is
concerned a lead-up event so this should be for students with
lower physical abilities who have trouble doing the running,
walking or jumping events.
Motor Skills Program
·
Created for athletes with lower functioning skills, ages 8
years and older.
·
They will participate in all events and receive challenger
ribbons.
·
The motor skill events are designed for Special Olympians
that are limited developmentally and athletically.
·
These events are designed for athletes with physical,
sensory, perceptual, and social developmental delays,
which contribute to adverse motor performance.
·
The events help athletes develop basic skills.
·
There are no age divisions.
·
Every athlete will have the opportunity to participate in
motor skill events.
·
To participate, the athlete must have a participation
(physical) form and a guardian consent form on file with
Special Olympics office.
History
·
With emphasis on training and participation through activities and play, rather
than competition, the Young Athletes Program provides children ages 2-7 with
gross motor skills training, group interaction and socialization opportunities.
·
These basic skills will prepare the Young Athletes for future participation in

History of the Award
The Athlete of the Year Award was established in honor of Andy

involvement in Special Olympics and his life revolved around it.
It was with a great deal of pride that this award was established in
