Mike Grandmaison Photography. Winnipeg, MB (1996 - present)
Mike owns and operates a successful freelance photography business in Winnipeg,
Manitoba. While based in Winnipeg, he travels extensively throughout Canada. He
specializes in outdoor assignment and stock photography including nature, tourism,
agriculture, industry and architecture for advertising, annual reports and editorial uses.
His fine art photographs adorn the boardrooms of corporations and living rooms of
private homes across the country. In 2011, Mike opened 'The Canadian Gallery', a
permanent gallery in Winnipeg, Manitoba to market his fine art imagery. Mike has also
conducted numerous seminars and workshops for a variety of organizations, including
recently at the 'Niagara School of Imaging' in St. Catharines, Ontario. He is a regular
contributor to ‘Outdoor Photography Canada’ magazine for which he illustrates a feature
called "Discovering Canada". Mike is the principal photographer for 12 coffee table
books, has shared the honours with another photographer in 2 other coffee table book
projects and has contributed images to numerous other books worldwide.

E - PHOTOGRAPHY EXPERIENCE
ASSIGNMENTS
Photography assignments have taken Mike to various locations across Canada. Mike
travelled to the Canadian East Coast in 2015 and to Ontario and Alberta to create new
images for an upcoming book on ‘Canada’ (scheduled for 2017). ‘Mike Grandmaison’s
Ontario (2015) and ‘Beautiful Alberta (2015). In 2013, Mike focussed his attention on the
new Canadian Museum for Human Rights completing a number of assignments for
Gartner Steel and Glass (Germany), Canada Post and Circle Design, both in Winnipeg,
MB. In 2010, Mike travelled to the Northwest Territories, the Yukon, British Columbia,
Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Ontario to capture new images to revise his new
'Canada' book for a 2017 release. In that same year, Mike also visited the Northwestern
Ontario town of Ear Falls, on a half dozen occasions to create new imagery for the
township as part of a 10-day assignment. A year earlier, in 2009, he photographed
throughout Quebec and the Canadian Maritimes for the same purpose.
In 2008, Mike completed the photography for a coffee table book on Muskoka, Ontario
for Key Porter Books (Toronto) which was published in March 2009, all the while
photographing for another book on the province of Ontario. In August 2007 and again in
March 2006, Mike photographed across the prairies and mountains for Agriculture and
Agri-Food Canada (Ottawa). In 2004, he completed the photography for his first coffee
table book with Key Porter called Canada (2005). In 2004, Mike also completed a 10-day
assignment to photograph the Lake of the Woods region for the Lake of the Woods
Business Incentive Corporation.
In 2003, Mike teamed up with a colleague and completed a major assignment for
Monsanto Canada while working for Osborne and Barr Communications in St. Louis, MI.
In 2002 and 2004, he travelled across Canada for Canadian Affair, a travel company in
the UK to obtain photographs of 70 hotels, inns and scenics. In 2000, Mike
photographed for three coffee table books; two business / tourism books for the London
and Hamilton Chambers of Commerce and one environmental book for the Region of
Sudbury ("Healing The Landscape"). These books came on the on the heels of two other
business / tourism books for Winnipeg and Canada's Technology Triangle (Kitchener,
Waterloo, Guelph and Cambridge).
In the fall of 1999, Mike completed a major photographic essay about The Reclamation
of the Sudbury Area for Canadian Geographic Magazine (April / May 2000 issue). Mike
travelled throughout the prairies on assignment for the Canadian Wheat Board to update
their agriculture file in the years 1996, 2000 and 2001. Mike also completed a number of

assignments for Canadian Gardening, Harrowsmith Country Life and Farm Forum
magazines.
Mike enjoys photographing architecture for a number of clients, often traveling
extensively on assignment for architectural firms like Smith Carter Architects, LM
Architects, Friesen Tokar Architect, Nejmark Architect and Number Ten Architectural
Group to name a few. Mike completed an assignment for Canada Post for a new
postage stamp commemorating the 125th anniversary of the University of Manitoba
(2002).
STOCK PHOTOGRAPHS
Mike’s photographs are represented internationally through four stock photography
agencies: First Light (Toronto), All Canada Photos (Victoria) and Jaynes Gallery (USA).
Mike also markets his photographs from his Winnipeg Office through Grandmaison
Photography. His images have been published extensively in annual reports, audiovisual presentations, books, brochures, calendars, magazines, web sites and as cards
and fine art prints. Mike's photographs often appear in various editions of most major
Canadian calendar companies, as well as in selected, single photographer calendars by
BrownTrout Publishers, North America's largest producer of fine calendars as well as
Canada's largest retail calendar company, Wyman Publishing. Mike's images are
routinely featured in the award winning, 'Inner Reflections' calendar. His images are also
featured in numerous corporate calendars, including the prestigious, exclusive and
limited edition engagement calendar by "Friesens.
LECTURER
Over the last 18 years, Mike has lectured on a variety of topics across western Canada,
including a presentation called ‘Meditations’ for Frame by Frame’ Photo Forum in Regina
(November 2014), at the ‘Latow Photographers Guild’ in Burlington, Ontario in 2013, at
Frame’ Photo Forum in Regina (April 2012), at 'The Niagara School of Imaging' in St.
Catharines, Ontario in 2011 and 2010 to teach a 6 day course in "Making A Living At
Nature Photography'. Mike presented "Water For Life" at a PechaKucha Night in
Winnipeg on March 9, 2011. On October 15 and 16, 2005 Mike presented his latest
imagery of Canada following the launch of his book called' Canada' at the Abbotsford
Photo Arts Club. In 1996, Mike helped organize a major photographic convention called
"Camera Canada College" (Winnipeg, MB) for CAPA at which he also collaborated in a
live presentation with international composer/singer/songwriter Ian Tamblyn from
Ottawa. It featured a live performance of original compositions by Ian Tamblyn,
complimented with images from Mike Grandmaison.
Lectures were also presented to Science North in Sudbury, the Kenora Camera Club
and 'The Friends of Killarney Provincial Park' in Ontario; Images Alberta Camera Club,
Gateway Camera Club in Alberta; the Professional Photographers of Saskatchewan and
the Professional Photographers of Manitoba in Saskatchewan; and the Manitoba
Naturalist Society, Winnipeg South Camera Club, Manitoba Camera Club, Pixels 2.1

WORKSHOPS
Mike has conducted numerous photography workshops throughout Canada. The most
recent was a 3-day workshop for the ‘Riding Mountain Photographic Workshops’ in
Wasagaming, Manitoba from June 20-22 , 2014. Mike also led a photo workshop for the
‘Latow Photographers Guild’ in Burlington, Ontario in April of 2013. In 2011 and 2010,
Mike conducted 6-day workshops for the Niagara School of Imaging in St. Catharines,
Ontario. Mike was also an instructor at ‘Focus on the Rockies’, a weekend photographic
event held in 2007 and 2008 at the Fairmont Jasper Park Lodge in Alberta.
Mike also co-founded Praxis Photographic Workshops for which he planned and
instructed on photography at various locations such as Sioux Narrows, ON and
Manitoba locations such as Hecla Provincial Park, Riding Mountain
National Park and Winnipeg. Mike also designed and conducted
numerous photo workshops for a number of organizations in various
locations in Manitoba such as Oak Hammock Marsh, Churchill,
Delta Marsh, Carberry, Neepawa, Riding Mountain National Park, Living Prairie
Museum, Winnipeg and also in Edmonton, Alberta and at the Jasper Park Lodge.
FINE ART
On March 20, 2011, Mike opened 'The Canadian Gallery' to promote his fine art
photographs to art collectors, galleries, museums and corporate buyers. The gallery
features a selection of Mike's nature imagery, printed to the highest standards and

Ian Tamblyn, North Track Records
Ian was the 2010 winner of the “English Songwriter of the Year” Award for his work on
the CD “Gyre”.
Mike provided photographs for "The Four Coast Project: Volumes 1 & 2. Mike also
collaborated with Ian in a "live audio-visual / music performance" at Camera Canada
College in July of 1996. Ian displayed some of Mike's images as backgrounds to a
number of his music concerts.

and Canadian Affair.
CD COVERS
Canadian singer songwriters Ian Tamblyn of Gatineau, QC (2011 Folk Songwriter of the

Sony Corporation also featured one of Mike's images on a CD called 'Rocky Mountains'.
