ANNUAL REPORT 2012-13 Mission: To shape positive attitudes about race and differences, reduce isolationism between urban and suburban schools, and improve math, science, and language arts skills. DONORS DELIVER Imagine building a raft out of duct tape, wood, and barrels. Gathered on the beautiful grounds of Winding Trails, in Farmington, 7th graders from Mary Hooker Environmental Studies Magnet School and Noah Webster MicroSociety Magnet School in Hartford engaged in a day of teambuilding. Through a progressive series of group games, communication exercises, and a contest to see who can build and successfully sail the best raft, students worked together to achieve a common goal. Students received instruction on Archimedes Principle, buoyancy, propulsion, stability, and engineering/design. In teams they designed and constructed a raft to float 4-6 people. This activity was sponsored in part by The Wolf Pack Foundation, Newman’s Own Foundation, The Werth Family Foundation, and generous donors like you. Described as “relentless” and “passionate” about the mission, Allan developed programs to serve over 4,500 students annually in Connecticut and Massachusetts. Inspired by Paul Newman’s vision to “teach kids to get along”, Allan embarked on building an organizational infrastructure for sustainability. His journey with The Discovery Center began in 2002 when he helped establish The Discovery Center as a separate 501 (c) (3). Allan’s leadership will be greatly missed, and we wish him every success! The Board of Directors hired Third Sector New England to assist with the transition to a new executive director. Presently, Eunice Bragg serves as the Interim Executive Director.
