WESTERN AUSTRALIAN PREMIER’S BOOK AWARDS
The Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards winners have been announced!
On Monday 16 September, the Honourable Minister John Day announced Michelle de Krester’s Questions of Travel
as winner of the 2012 Premier’s Prize worth $25,000.
There were an amazing total of 507 entries submitted this year, and the prize money totalled $120,000.00
Questions of Travel is described as:
Yet again, Michelle de Kretser delivers an extraordinary novel, possibly her best yet. Topical in
its subject matter of asylum and belonging, deft and delicate in its portrayal of tragedy,
Questions of Travel has already garnered significant acclaim nationally and internationally, and
deservedly so.
Deborah Forster’s The Meaning of Grace won the People’s Choice Award. It is described as:
A simple premise is handled with assurance by Deborah Forster in The Meaning of Grace, only
her second novel. A mother's cancer diagnosis brings together her three adult children and
Forster scrapes back their relationships to the bone with both compassion and generosity but
certainly no sugar-coating. The ease of the story-telling belies the skill behind the writing.

OVERDUE BOOKS
The library charges an overdue Administration Fee of $8.00 per membership whenever we have to write to let
you know that your loans are more than three weeks overdue.
The loan period for Vincent Library is 3 weeks; you will be offered a receipt showing the due back
date when you borrow at the service desk, or if you borrow using the self serve kiosk. It’s a good
idea to save that recept into your diary, or mark the date due back on the family calendar.
The library will also send out an email reminding you that your loans are due back soon; this email
includes a link to the catalogue so that you may be able to renew the loans, providing certain
conditions are met.
It is also helpful to teach your children to keep their library books in a designated shelf, so that
you will be able to find them all when it’s time to bring them back.
Members, you are reminded that is your responsibility to return your loaned items on time.
DID YOU MISS OUR PHOTOGRAPHIC EXHIBITION?
In August, the library was host to the photographic exhibition called “Love, Loss and Laughter; seeing Alzheimer’s
differently”. The exhibition was comprised of over 60 large photos, collected throughout the world by Professor
Cathy Greenblat.
People were so impressed by the exhibition that the library has purchased a copy of Professor
Greenblat’s two books: Love, loss, and laughter : seeing Alzheimer's differently and Alive
with Alzheimer’s.
For more information about these books, you may check in the library catalogue or speak to
the staff.
HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD TO LOVE TO READ
Here are some helpful hints to use to help your children to love the experience of reading.
>> Start young and read to your babies – this is particularly successful if you read something that you like – they
can tell!
>> Enrol them at the library as soon as you can – it is never too early, and they will love the regular visits and
the wide variety of choice available to your family
>> Keep reading to them and with them; make sure books are out on your benches, coffee
tables and so on – they’ll love to pick them up and read
>> Children love to learn – find books that relate to their favourite subject and read with them
>> Your child should feel that reading is a special, rewarding time ... spoil them with an extra
30 minute story before bed when they’ve been particularly good
>> There are many reading options, so let them read comics, shopping lists, eBooks, or
whatever they want. This will build up their reading expertise and stamina!
>> Some children respond well to challenges, others need encouragement, so make sure you provide a good mix
of simple and more difficult reading options, to keep them stimulated
READING WITH DAD
The school holidays will provide Dads with a great opportunity to spend some time reading with their children.
Dads have an important role to play in supporting their child’s literacy development, and demonstrating that
reading is a pleasurable and acceptable pastime. Reading to your child for as little as 10 minutes a day will improve
their literacy, and will create many happy memories for them.
Don’t know what to read? Start with some of these fantastic authors, and let the children pick something too.
Check them out in our catalogue!
