Sonenshine Family Project Feeds Hundreds this Holiday Season When Debbie Sonenshine’s husband asked her what she wanted for her upcoming 60th birthday, she said, ‘a truckload of food.’ With planning help from her family and donations from hundreds of friends, associates and others, Debbie’s birthday wish came true. The family raised $25,000 to purchase enough food to fill 500 holiday baskets for Community Action Center and provide food gift cards to the agency which prevents homelessness and hunger in the Sandy Springs and Dunwoody communities. “Hopefully it will give the recipients a little hope and make their holidays a little brighter,” said Debbie, a Sandy Springs resident and Coldwell Banker realtor. On Sunday, November 7, Debbie’s 60th birthday, about 100 volunteers came together to pack the food in recycled boxes that were donated and decorated by volunteers. Debbie Sonenshine, left, and her family, daughter Rachael, husband Stan, and son-in-law Jonathan Halitsky organized the holiday food project. “I’m overwhelmed, said Debbie. “ I shouldn’t be surprised because our friends are very community-minded and generous people and it’s just been wonderful that people from all parts of our life have come out to support us.” The Orchard Park Kroger donated empty space for the project and delivered dozens of pallets of non-perishable foods. Volunteers worked all day packing the holiday boxes of food. The boxes will be distributed by CAC to pre-screened local families who have experienced crisis situations this year and need assistance to remain in the homes and feed their families. Volunteers Joan Gill Redmond, left with Jean & John Thornton help move food baskets to CAC. Debbie’s inspiration for the project to help families in our community comes from her late father who often organized efforts to help those who are less fortunate. She hopes others will be inspired to do similar volunteer projects to help families in need. YES! I WANT TO SUPPORT THE COMMUNITY ACTION CENTER! The annual food drive coincides with the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur. Members are asked to donate a bag of groceries. Many thanks to Lynn Freedman, Susan Minsk, Jackie Greene, Alan Rolnick and Steve Bram for leading project and to all of the volunteers who helped load, unload and shelve the food. The donation provided CAC with about 6 weeks worth of food. CAC’s Food Pantry receives an average of 750 visits per month. Eric Carlson – Assistant Treasure Gradient Services Inc.
