Rich and Poor Tudors Overview

Rich and Poor Tudors : History : Year 3/4
Learning Objective
Overview
Lesson 1
To be able to place the
Tudors on a timeline and
identify features of the
period.
Children will find out how the Tudors came to power
at the Battle of Bosworth. They will get a brief
overview of each of the Tudor monarchs before
considering what life would have been like during
the Tudor period.
Lesson 2
Children will explore how Tudor society was
organised and start to recognise the differences in
the experiences of rich and poor people. They will
use pictures to assess whether they think the person
shown was rich or poor, describing the reasons for
their choices.
•
To distinguish between
wealth and poverty in Tudor
times.
Lesson 3
To identify the features of
Tudor buildings and consider
how comfortable they would
have been.
Children will use pictures as prompts to promote
discussion about the interior and exterior of a variety
of Tudor houses. They will look at the features of
Tudor houses and learn how certain features
signified wealth, such as windows and bricks.

Lesson 4
Children will find out what an inventory is and how
they were used when a Tudor person died. They will
go through some inventories and decide on whether
it showed the goods of a rich or a poor person. They
can also translate an inventory from old English to
modern English.
•
To use inventories to find out
about the lives of people in
the Tudor period.
To find out what life was like
for poor people in Tudor
times.
Children will use images to help them make
inferences about what life was like for poor people
in the Tudor period. They will identify why poor
people were treated badly and some of the reasons
why the poor remained poor. It goes on to explore
attitudes towards the poor and how these changed
towards the end of the Tudor period.
To find out about the lives of
rich people in Tudor times.
Children will use a variety of different sources of
information to find out about the lives of rich people
during the Tudor period. They will ask and answer
questions, and express their findings in a variety of
ways.
To be able to compare the
lives of rich and poor Tudors.
Children will consolidate their understanding of the
differences between the lives of the rich and the
poor during the Tudor period. They will draw on
their own knowledge to summarise the differences
across a range of aspects, such as food, housing,
health and crime.
