To the children’s delight,
Santa made sure every child
received a present.
Rain, sleet or snow and even a
power outage could not keep
Santa away for our annual Santa
in Blue event held on December
13, 2011.
Children began their day by going to the high school to await
power to classrooms at the elementary school. We did not
think Santa would arrive on the
helicopter due to bad weather.

awaited gifts.
Parents/families and younger
siblings joined our children as
Santa called each child by name
and presented the children with
one or more presents.
We also want to thank the
parents who provided food
for these enlisted members of
our armed forces. The truly
enjoyed themselves. It was a
treat to see one young man
eat a tamale for the first time!

The big hits of the program included Ms. Oudom and Ms.
Pablo’s class singing, “I want a
hippopotamus for Christmas”.
This year was a treat for all families as their children sang their
hearts out at the Christmas Program held on December 16,
2011.
The fourth grade students from
Ms. Woodbury and Ms. Lujan’s
classrooms brought the house
down with their rock and roll
rendition of “Go, Rudolph, Go”.
It takes a lot of practice and
encouragement from our staff
to make sure children feel con-
fident. We were so proud of all
of children as their performance
made us all give thanks for the
smiles and love they give to us
each day.

Most Improved Students for December
In November, we had our
very first Most Improved
Student Luncheon. Twentyfive students were nominated by teachers and staff
as having improved behavior and/or handing in
homework, overall attitude.
The students were treated
to pizza, drinks and a chocolate fountain. The fountain was a big hit with the
students.
We look forward to our
monthly luncheons. Our
next one will be in January.
Students who are nominated will be given a letter to
bring home to inform parents.

SO YOU CAN
Power Teaching Math is in full
swing. Teachers are awarding team
points and handing out certificates
to the different team levels. The
class starts off each day with “Get
the Goof”. The students try to figure out the answer to a problem that
is done incorrectly on the board.
This helps the students with math
steps and encourages them to see
how a problem is answered. This is
a fun activity at home that parents
can use. Hang a math problem on
the refrigerator and see if your child
can figure out if the answer is correct or not. Let’s help our students
be outstanding in math. Every 3rd,
4th and 5th grade students should
be practicing the multiplication
facts. This is a skill that when mastered can help your student in the
upper grades of math. If you want
practice sheets to use at home have
your student ask the teacher or Mrs.
Cannon for more math practice.
BE SAFE!
Success for All (SFA) Reading Corner
Did you know that one
of the most beneficial elements
in the academic success of a
student is parent and family
involvement. This is why Success For All asks that every
child reads at home every night
for 20 minutes. Each night you
should see a Read & Respond
form that your student has
brought from school. Each
night, please read a book together, letting your child do as much
of the reading as possible. Children learn to read by reading.
The more a child gets to practice, the greater the likelihood
he or she will develop into a
strong reader. One of the primary objectives of having parents listen to a child read is to
develop fluency. Have fun,
enjoy this process. Remember
that the goal of reading with
your student is for practice and
fluency along with the develop-
ment of a love for reading. Your
child’s reading does not have to be
perfect, let you student use their problem-solving strategies, he or she has
been learning in school. Primarily,
you should listen, provide some support, and most of all, remember to
praise your child. As Dr. Seuss said,
"The more that you read, the more
things you will know. The more you
learn, the more places you'll go."

Smith’s class,
