PRESS RELEASE
“Remarkable pianist and
composer” (The Telegraph)
BRUNO HEINEN joins forces
with CAMERATA ALMA VIVA to
present their take on Vivaldi’s Four
Seasons in new Babel label album:
CHANGING OF THE SEASONS
In a crossover collaboration
mixing chamber music and jazz
improvisation, London-based
pianist, composer and bandleader
Bruno Heinen and string ensemble
Camerata Alma Viva join forces for
the first time to release
Changing of the Seasons.
As a former Royal College
of Music student, the album
represents a return for Heinen
to his more traditional classical
music roots. It also highlights his
ever-present interest in crossing
musical boundaries, just like he
did in his 2008 arrangement of
Stockhausen’s Tierkreis for jazz
sextet.
Inspired by Vivaldi’s set of Violin
Concerti, Four Seasons, the album
is a new work featuring Heinen’s
own imagining of each season
in his first ever score for strings.
Using the Italian composers’ poems
as a starting point, Heinen imagines
what Vivaldi would write if he were
alive today. The result combines
written parts, distinctive themes
and modern jazz improvisation.
Whilst sections of the work were
rehearsed intensively before the
recording sessions, others were
left open to Heinen’s creative
inspiration in the moment,
leading to an effortlessly
imaginative performance.
Listen to Changing of the
Seasons here:
Recorded at the Vortex Jazz Club,
London, with a live, one-take
approach, typical of jazz, the
project was supported mainly
via a crowdfunding campaign.
Changing of the Seasons is
released on the Babel Label,
owned by the influential jazz
promoter and Vortex Jazz Club
director Oliver Weinding.
Autumn – Bruno Heinen
For Camerata Alma Viva’s Musical
Director, Charlotte Maclet,
Changing of the Seasons is
“the culmination of a long-term
exploration of Vivaldi’s Four
Seasons, with its catchy tunes
and strong structure, which can
be turned into spaces of creative
freedom.”
