The Star
A Catholic School committed to a Vision of Lasallian Education
TERM 4
WEEK 1
–
16 OCTOBER 2013 – ISSUE 1/13
Dear St Michael’s College Community,
SOCIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY
This year, the Catholic Church celebrated Social Justice Sunday on 29 September, the first weekend of our holidays. This year’s Social Justice
Statement is titled: ‘Lazarus at our Gate: A critical moment in the fight against world poverty’.
The Statement urges all Australians to focus on our obligation to help the world’s poorest and to work to combat poverty wherever it is
found. Although progress has been made over the past decade in the fight against extreme poverty, one billion people still live on less than
$1.25 per day, and 20 per cent of the world’s poor live in countries near Australia.
The following is a statement from the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council:
The Australian Catholic Bishops’ Social Justice Statement for 2013–2014 calls on the Christian community and all Australians to stand in
solidarity with our neighbours around the world who are living in conditions of extreme poverty.
The title of the Statement comes from the Gospel reading for Social Justice Sunday this year – Jesus’ parable about the poor man, Lazarus,
who lies unnoticed at the gate of the rich man (Luke 16:19–31).
In 2000, the world leaders of 189 nations, including Australia, gathered together and committed themselves to tackling global poverty.
Their Declaration gave rise to eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to be achieved by 2015. While great progress has been made
over the past decade, many of these goals will not be fulfilled: Around the world, a quarter of a million women still die in childbirth each
year and eight million children die annually from malnutrition and preventable diseases. One billion people remain in extreme poverty and
20 per cent of the poorest in the world live in countries near Australia.
‘In our region’, the Bishops say, ‘Australia is the rich man and Lazarus is at our gate.’
Five groups in particular need our support. They are: people who face severe hunger; people who are victims of disaster; Indigenous
peoples; people with disability; and refugees and displaced people. The circumstances they face remind us of our obligation to help the
world’s poorest and to work to combat poverty wherever it is found.
It is time to renew our commitment to address world poverty – a commitment inspired by the mission of Jesus in his Incarnation and in his
gift of the Eucharist. Pope Francis has reminded us of our vocation: ‘Fighting poverty, both material and spiritual, building peace and
constructing bridges’.
What will we do, as individuals and as a nation, to help the most needy who sit at our gate?
The question for us of course is what will we do as a St Michael’s College Community to help the most needy at our gate?
For further details about the Social Justice Statement, visit the Australian Catholic Social Justice Council website www.socialjustice.catholic.org.au
YEAR 12
In welcoming everyone back to school for Term 4, we particularly keep the Year 12s in our thoughts and prayers. While it is an exciting time as
they draw near the end of their schooling years, it is also a period when they need the support of us all. The next few weeks leading into
exams and final assessments are particularly demanding and require a commitment from students, staff and parents. There are a number of
opportunities to stop and reflect however, including Friday’s Service Awards Assembly and next Thursday’s Graduation Mass. These are key
points in time in acknowledging the Class of 2013 and celebrating St Michael’s College as a Catholic school in the Lasallian tradition and our
commitment to faith, service and community.

So many of our students are getting ready for their final exams, and the Year 12s, in
particular, are coming to a very important time in their lives – a time of the
decisions that goes with exams. Please pray for all students in the weeks ahead.
A PRAYER FOR EXAMS
Dear God,
as I approach the exams that are ahead of me,
gift me with the skills that I need in order to do my best.
I bring before you my nervousness and my fears,
along with my hopes and dreams
and invite you to be with me.
I pray that I experience the calmness that the Spirit brings.
And whatever the outcome
I will truly believe in the unique person that I am.
Amen
A PRAYER FOR DISCERNMENT
Dear God.
As I think about my future
and the decisions ahead
I pray for wisdom.
I pray to make the right choices
for me and those around me.
May I always be open
even if it is the hardest decision to make.
Give me the strength
to accept all the implications
this will have on my future
and bless me as I journey through life.
Amen.

PRIMARY CAMPUS
GRANDPARENTS MORNING
On Friday 25 October the Primary Campus will celebrate the wonderful contribution Grandparents and the more senior members of our
community make to the lives of our children. Students will be encouraged to invite their Grandparents or a significant person who provides
that wealth of wisdom and understanding that is so highly valued to attend on this morning 9:05 am until 11:30 am.
CHANGE TO SCHOOL START TIME – TERM 4 2013
During Term 4, commencing this week the school day will begin at 8:50 am. This brings us in line with the Secondary Campus. School will
conclude at 3:20 pm (no change). The extra five minutes gained will be added to lunch recreational time resulting in a 40 minute play time. In
addition, a 10 minute period from 12:40 pm to 12:50 pm will be provided for all students R – 7 to eat their lunch under the direct supervision of
their class teacher. The benefit of this trial will hopefully result in students consuming their lunches prior to active play, a reduction in food
wastage and litter, as well as more time to be active. The trial will be reviewed towards the end of the year.
HATS
Hats are required for all outdoor activities including recess, lunch and PE activities.
PERSONAL ITEMS
Students are advised that it is best not to bring personal items to school such as sporting equipment, expensive items/electronic devices or
trading cards. Personal items can be easily lost or misplaced and on occasions shared with others but unfortunately not returned to the
rightful owner. The College provides students with sporting equipment for recreational time.
PLAYGROUND
Students who wish to access the playground equipment after school must be supervised by parents. Teachers are on duty at the exit points of
the school and are therefore not in a position to supervise children on the playground. To prevent unnecessary injuries we ask all students and
parents to please adhere to this safety directive.
UNIFORMS
Parents please note Term 4 sees the transition to the summer uniform which includes the college hat. Students R – 7 are able to wear their
SMC PE uniform to school on designated PE days this term.
SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS
Sports and Special photographs taken in Term 3 are on display in the Primary Administration office. Please finalise orders by Friday 1
November. Cost of photos is $15. Order Envelopes are available.
SPORTS DAY – TERM 4
Please be advised that Sports Day for the Primary Campus will be held in Term 4, Friday 1 November at the Henley Little Athletics Club venue
at Henley Memorial Oval. Students R – 7 will participate. Further details will be forthcoming.

YEAR 7 CAMP TO CANBERRA
During week 9 of Term 3, forty-nine Year 7 students along with five staff undertook
an educational tour of the national capital. While on this tour they participated in a
variety of educational programs focused on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and
democracy. Highlights were a guided tour of Parliament House, the War Memorial
and a night visit to Questacon where students were given the opportunity to
participate in a variety of hands on science exhibits. Other highlights were a visit to
AIS and the National Gallery.
The Australian Government recognizes the importance of all young Australians
being able to visit the national capital as part of their civics and citizenship
education. We would like to thank the Australian Government for their support of
this program through the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate.

STUDENT SERVICES
YEAR 12 STUDENTS
There is still a significant amount of information coming in for Year 12 students and we will be emailing students on a weekly basis until
mid-November on their school emails. We will ask students to complete a Destination Survey in the coming weeks and hope they can
provide a mobile number and a non St Michael’s email address so we are able to contact them once they are off the College intranet
system. In the last week of November we will post home an extensive Final Careers Bulletin with information to help the transition and
responding to SATAC preferences etc. We are assuming Year 12 results will be released around 18 December and on the day of the Results
Release, Ms Coorey and Ms Kemp will be at the College to provide any assistance. More details will be in the Final Careers Newsletter. We
urge any families who have concerns to make contact on the Results Release Day as there is only a short time frame for resolution. We
welcome emails telling us of students who gain fulltime employment/ apprenticeships etc and also any employers looking to fill positions
and will welcome any leads that we can pass onto students looking for work. Please email Rose Coorey at [email protected]
UNIVERSITY APPLICATIONS 2014
Students who submitted a SATAC Application online can add, delete and change the order of preferences until Monday 6 January,
however, there are some courses that cannot be added to after 27 September. If you delete one of these courses and then try and add it
back it will not be accepted. Students making an application now will incur a late fee but will still get equal consideration for most courses
until 2 December. Students applying for Creative Arts courses at Flinders need to be aware of what date in November Portfolios etc need
to be submitted. Dance auditions must be booked by this Saturday 19 October by phoning Rebecca Haycock on 8463 5005. Thursday 31
October is the last date to pay for a STAT sitting fee without incurring hefty late fees. Students needing support in this process are
encouraged to make an appointment with Ms Coorey or Mr Vizaniaris as soon as possible. To date we have seen 70% of our Year 12 cohort
make a SATAC application for a University course in 2014. Each year we tend to see 95% of students offered their first or second preference
– a great track record.
2014 TAFE APPLICATIONS OPEN
Students wanting more information as to how to apply for a TAFESA course via the SATAC website can check the Applying for TAFESA
PowerPoint on the College Intranet in the Student Services Careers section or view the PDF on the SATAC Website: under “Resources for
Schools”. We have encouraged students to apply early on in the process as there may be an advantage if courses become competitive
during the Application Process. Also please keep an eye on this link as some TAFE Courses have important Information Sessions. These
Sessions run from October through to November: http://www.tafesa.edu.au/courses/info-sessions. Students need to have applied for a
TAFE course by Friday 15 November.

Just a final reminder that any student completing a Certificate 3 or above outside the formal College VET program must ensure a copy of
the Certificate and a list of all competencies completed are provided at the latest by Friday 22 November. All completed Cert 3 and above
results will be sent to SACE. In the year students complete Year 12 SACE this Cert 3 result may contribute towards their ATAR. The cohort
of students we really need to hear from are those who may have completed a Cert 3 in their part time job. Whilst many students have
already provided us with these results there may be some undertaking a Certificate 3 which we have not been notified about. Please
ensure this paperwork is emailed or handed in to Mrs Nikki Tidd in Student Services by this final deadline Friday 22 November to
[email protected] or phone 81502352.
