Introduction
The Virginia K-5 Children’s Literature and Correlation of the Virginia Standards of Learning
is designed to assist parents and people working with children in selecting books that reinforce
the Virginia Standards of Learning in the four core content areas – English, History and Social
Science, Math, and Science. This book list is not inclusive of all the books available but
represents selections pulled from lists generated by school divisions and libraries. Additionally,
books were recommended by the participants for inclusion.
There are additional SOL areas that are not tested at this time. For an unabridged copy of the SOL, visit the Virginia
Department of Education’s website at: http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Instruction/sol.html. The intention of this
guide is to acquaint parents, teachers and students with the many resources available to assist students in attaining mastery
of the Standards of Learning. The websites listed at the end of this publication will have additional suggestions for
students taking the SOL test.
Learning Everyday A diverse range of activities beyond the school day can help to cultivate students’ interest in and
understanding of the Standards of Learning. Classroom lessons will take root by discussing their meaning and value and
by:
• carefully selecting books at the public library that correlate to subject areas
• visiting museums, botanical gardens, the zoo
• caring for pets
• planting and maintaining a garden
• grocery shopping
• following directions to build or install items around the home

Homelessness
Project HOPE is Virginia’s Program for the
Education of Homeless Children and Youth.
The College of William and Mary
administers the program for the Virginia
Department of Education. Funding is
authorized under the McKinney-Vento
Homeless Education Act, Title X, Part C of
the No Child Left Behind Act (P.L. 107-110).
The Purpose of Project HOPE is to ensure
the enrollment, attendance and success of
homeless children and youth in school.
Who is Homeless?
Anyone who, due to a lack of housing, lives:
· In emergency or transitional shelters;
· In motels, hotels, trailer parks, campgrounds,
abandoned in hospitals, awaiting foster care
placement;
· In cars, parks, public places, bus or train stations,
abandoned buildings;
· Doubled up with relatives or friends;
· In these conditions and is a migratory child or
youth.
*To determine homelessness, consider the
permanence and adequacy of the living situation.
