K-5 Children’s Literature and
Correlation of the Virginia
Standards of Learning
Spring 2003
Introduction
The Virginia K-5 Children’s Literature and Correlation of the Virginia Standards of Learning
is designed to assist parents and people working with children in selecting books that reinforce
the Virginia Standards of Learning in the four core content areas – English, History and Social
Science, Math, and Science. This book list is not inclusive of all the books available but
represents selections pulled from lists generated by school divisions and libraries. Additionally,
books were recommended by the participants for inclusion.
There are additional SOL areas that are not tested at this time. For an unabridged copy of the SOL, visit the Virginia
Department of Education’s website at: http://www.pen.k12.va.us/VDOE/Instruction/sol.html. The intention of this
guide is to acquaint parents, teachers and students with the many resources available to assist students in attaining mastery
of the Standards of Learning. The websites listed at the end of this publication will have additional suggestions for
students taking the SOL test.
Learning Everyday A diverse range of activities beyond the school day can help to cultivate students’ interest in and
understanding of the Standards of Learning. Classroom lessons will take root by discussing their meaning and value and
by:
• carefully selecting books at the public library that correlate to subject areas
• visiting museums, botanical gardens, the zoo
• caring for pets
• planting and maintaining a garden
• grocery shopping
• following directions to build or install items around the home

ordering using this number
The same title can have several
different ISBN numbers depending
on whether the copy is hard or
paperback or different publishers
release it. At this time, only one is
listed. This does not reflect any
preference for publisher or format.
So, 1.7 means the book fits a
first grade science SOL and it
is the 7th objective.
NOTE: in History/Social
Studies the fourth grade SOL
is denoted as VS and the fifth
grade SOL is USI.

English
Project HOPE is gradually adding readability to the English entries. The Fry Readability Graph considers the
average number of syllables per 100 words and the average number of sentences containing the 100 words from
three sample passages. Using the intersection point of the two pieces of information on the Fry Readability Graph,
an approximate grade level is found. Readability is noted at the end of entries in italics.
