It sure has caught me by surprise this year, as I find how little time I have to be unprepared . It will all fall into place, I keep telling myself. Which reminds me… still looking for someone to take ownership of the Poppies this year – if you are feeling this is something you would be interested in doing and have questions – please call me. I’d be more than happy to answer your questions and convince you that you would have a super time taking this on. But call soon, we have to secure venues soon. I really hope someone will jump on this opportunity – and run with it. You will have lots of help and guidance. On another note, we have had some really fantastic gifts of donation to our Unit – we thought the best way to make use of these gifts would be to hold a silent auction, which we are planning to hold at our March Meat Raffle/Bar Bingo on March 14th. Right now, we have a few things, to make this event even greater – we need donations. We are looking for new or gently used items. If you have something you would like to donate, please drop it off at the Legion and earmark it for Auxiliary Silent Auction / Jan – then plan on coming down to the Post on that day and maybe play some Bingo or try your luck at the meat raffles. If you are interested in helping with the auction, call or email me. To keep you all updated, here are the donations we have made as of 10/31/14: Oct 07, 2014 - $220.00 - Hastings Bingo Oct 16, 2014 –$ 25.00 - Auxiliary Emergency Fund - Memorial on behalf of Lyla Haugen) Oct 21, 2014 – $300.00 - District President Project– Hastings Greenhouse Panels Membership, Jan Lauby 952.891.1399 [email protected] Chaplain, Heika Cybart 651.332.2352 [email protected] Veteran Affairs Gorda Olsen 952.431.3241 [email protected] Community Service, Shirley See 952-431-7616 [email protected] (Stay tuned for more…….) I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving, and I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Let’s all try to make 2015 the best year ever – I’m willing to give it a shot. Have your high school junior girls check out Girls State. Last year we were instrumental in sending six girls to Girls State. Scholarship information will also go out to the same school districts. If you have a daughter, son, grandchild, etc. that will graduate in 2015 have them check into the information. We will have information for both programs at the office or contact me. (Cont’d on next page) December 2014/January 2015 Page 1 American Legion Auxiliary (Cont’d from pg 1) FALL CONFERENCE REPORT - The Fall Conference was held at Shooting Star Casino at Mahnomen. The Auxiliary had 239 members attending plus 239 Legion members and 32 SAL. There was a lot of good information given out about all the Auxiliary and Legion programs. The main concerns were losing membership in the Auxiliary and shortage of funds for the Auxiliary programs. Our programs are in the red for over $100,000. We need to support our Auxiliary programs before we spend money for local programs. Please see page 3 for important information on the “Legion Family Christmas Get-together”. Reservations are required by st December 1 . Good food and wonderful fellowship will be had by all. –Janet VETERANS AFFAIRS & REHAB Submitted by Gorda Olsen A big “Thank You Ladies” for all of the delicious baked goods donated for the visit to Hastings Veterans Home in October and for Veteran’s Day in November. The Gift Shop at the Hastings Veterans Home is December 11th. All of the Veterans receive a gift and get to shop for gifts for their loved ones, Auxiliary members help as their “Personal Shopper” and assist in wrapping their gifts. Also in December we have the $5.00 Dollar Bill Shower ….. This year thanks to a generous grant from the V4V each Veteran will receive $20.00 instead of $5.00. These are just two of the events throughout the year that your support of the Auxiliary fundraisers; meat raffles, bar bingo and poppies make possible, all of the proceeds go to benefit our Veterans. Chaplain, Heike Cybart Please contact me if you know of anybody that is sick, passed away or just in need for our Prayers. I can be reached @ 651-332-2352 or @ [email protected] Membership, Jan Lauby We are climbing, but the journey has slowed a little bit. If you have not turned in your dues yet, please do so – we are currently at 62.68%. Would love to be at 100% by the end of the year – let’s go!!! Thanks to all for your continued support – I mentioned this last newsletter, but it’s worth repeating for all who do not like to receive dues reminders – you will get th one from National if you have not paid your 2015 dues by December 10 , which means I will need to have your dues before that date, so I can get them to Department and they are entered by that date. Plus, you will need your 2015 card to get into the “Members Only “events. - Jan December 2014/January 2015 Page 2 American Legion Auxiliary Craft & Bake Sale – another successful Annual Auxiliary Craft/Bake Sale was held October 25th with 26 vendors displaying a wide variety of crafts. Sally Uphoff took charge of the bake sale with the help of Sandy Mortenson and Judy Behrends who priced and sold all the goodies – good job girls! Judy Behrends was in charge of the concession stand with assistance from Linda Kuntz, Maggie Carlson, Richie Wenthold and Shirley Lee. Thank you Linda for making your famous Sloppy Joes which everyone loves. We served lunch from 11am-3pm and was enjoyed by all. Thanks for doing such a great job.
