Hutcheson The Greene County Juvenile Court Diversion Program is an informal court alternative offered to unruly and/or minor delinquent involved youth. Diversion focuses on holding youth accountable for their behavior. Success in Diversion is dependent on having a strong working relationship with the child, the parent, and often the school. PURPOSE The primary purpose of the Diversion Program is to prevent formal court involvement for those youth who have had no previous court history. The Diversion Program is based on a widely accepted belief that no all cases are best handled through the formal court . WHO IS ELIGIBLE Youth charged with a misdemeanor who are first time offenders. Youth who display unruly behaviors at home. You who are truant from school. Youth at risk of being adjudicated unruly or delinquent as a result of a complaint with this Court. GOAL The goal is to address present acting out behavior by providing short-term, intensive court intervention for youth and their families. The target population is youth ages 8 through 17. The diversion program’s focus is on behavioral ownership, through selfdiscipline, individual and family empowerment and victim awareness. The Program aims at reducing recidivism by improving the youth’s decision making skills, strengthening the family relationships , as well as enhancing the child’s self-esteem. contract that the youth and parent/guardian must complete. A denial will be transferred to the formal court process. 3) Youth will be monitored by diversion staff over a 2-4 month period through home, school, and/or office visits. 4) Successful completion of the program results in dismissal of the complaint. There will be no official court record. Unsuccessful completion will result in formal court involvement. PROCESS 1) The diversion hearing will take place in a diversion counselor’s office. 2) Youth will be expected to admit or deny the alleged behavior at the onsent of the diversion hearing.
