A message from Dr. David M. Carlisle, President and CEO
of Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science
Welcome to
Jazz at Drew!
If you are reading this, chances are you are somewhere in the
audience enjoying the smooth sounds of the return of Jazz
at Drew, a major fundraiser for Charles R. Drew University of
Medicine and Science (CDU). Each Jazz at Drew sponsorship
and ticket sold helps raise money for scholarships, student
services, campus facilities, and pipeline programs at CDU and
therefore makes you a donor for 2016. For that, the faculty,
staff, students, administration and alumni of CDU say a hearty
“Thank You!”
Today, October 1, 2016, marks the culmination of a yearlong
celebration of our 50th Anniversary. As the 14th President of this
institution, I pay homage to the coalition of driven community
members, health professionals, philanthropists, and elected
officials who answered the calls for help to keep us here over
the 50 years and whose legacy will never be forgotten.
In the 8-year absence of Jazz at Drew, the University has overcome many challenges, but “We’re still
here!” In fact, we are here for the long haul. We are ready for GROWTH – growth that will allow CDU
to become bigger, better and bolder as we seek to provide: “Education—a fundamental resource”.
Your support of Jazz at Drew, along with the generous support of the Jazz at Drew artists, will help
the University to fulfill its GROWTH agenda. This makes Jazz at Drew a unique jazz festival to engage
the community with a philanthropic and fun purpose.
Thank you for celebrating the University’s 50th Anniversary. Thank you for attending Jazz at Drew!
Enjoy the festival!

GB5
In the tradition of such notable families as The Winans
& Jackson 5 or the extended families of Take 6 and
4Him, come the Gutierrez Brothers, known as GB5 for
their Latin Gospel Praise. With vocals that tingle the
spine one minute and warm the heart the next, the
long-awaited debut release of these siblings vibrates at
DNA frequencies known only to a few chosen families.
With an affinity for worship and a deep heritage in the
church, GB5 brings the weight of their obedient journey
and their Hispanic heritage to this debut, and the results are formidable.
As the 21st century came rushing in, so too did GB5 as their uncle, who serves as pastor, asked
them to put together a song for a New Year’s Eve service. Who would have known that half a
decade later, these brothers would be supporting a recording that has brought together the
likes of Jonathan Butler, Justo Almario, Luis Conte, and world renowned Tata Vega! The project,
Unbreakable Bond, also brought to the table the production talents of legendary Alberto Salas
(Santana, Los Lobos, Andrae Crouch) and seasoned veteran Phil Sillas (Natalie Grant and Plus
One).
Growing up in the church, these siblings discovered their voices early on. In the subsequent
7 years, the members of GB5 have created a style showcasing their brotherly love of groove,
harmony, R&B, Latin fused-Gospel and, most importantly, their heartfelt desire to worship a living
God.
Hailing from San Jose, California, GB5 was raised to honor God in everything they did. Louie,
Jamie, Isaac, Mark and Aaron sensed from a young age that God was melding their hearts together
around something more than their love of music. Artistic genes were passed down from their
grandfather’s ability to play a variety of instruments and their mother’s unrestrained singing at
the top of her voice in their home. This legacy made music one of the main languages of the home
and heart.
“We also had the privilege to grow up in church under some awesome worship leaders who taught
us how to worship in ‘Spirit and in truth’ and our parents have always encouraged us to stick
together and follow our dreams,” remembers Jamie.
It is their Latin and international flavors, however, that the West Coast and large cities love as the
group brings together styling’s as varied as the countries from which the influences are found—
places such as Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Brazil and the Caribbean. You quickly hear moments of
salsa, meringue and even Afro Cuban grooves that make this project unique.
GB5’s love of Gospel music is also evident from such influences as the Clark Sisters and Andrae
Crouch, who have inspired them over the years. “As our taste for music broadened as we got
older, it always came from a ‘soulful’ place,” describes Isaac.
Even as they team up alongside such artists as Donnie McClurkin, Chris Tomlin, Marcos Witt and
others, it is clear that the members of GB5 have a call on their lives to create a space for God’s
visitation. Unbreakable Bond is an astonishingly seasoned debut that combines vocal brilliance
with an undeniable heart for worship from a family whose bond is just that--unbreakable.

Dwight Trible
Many jazz musicians will tell you that they prefer not
to work with singers, because most jazz singers lack
the ability to improvise, have no understanding of
musicianship, nor any of the other traits associated
with making jazz music - one of the most interesting
and exciting musical genres today.
Dwight Trible is a singer who combines the best of
vocal virtuosity with musicianship and improvisational
skills to the delight of audiences and musicians alike.
In addition to performing with his own group, the
Dwight Trible Ensemble, Dwight is the vocalist with
the Pharaoh Sanders Quartet and is also the vocal director for the Horace Tapscott Pan Afrikan
Peoples’ Arkestra.
Not a newcomer to the music scene, Dwight has worked with such notables as Oscar Brown,
Jr., Charles Lloyd, Billy Childs, Kenny Burrell, Kenny Garrett, Steve Turre, Harold Land, Harry
Belafonte, Della Reese and Norman Conners, John Beasley, Patrice Rushen, Babatunde Lea, Ernie
Watts, Kahlil El Zabar, as well as contemporary soul artist like LA Reid and DJ Rogers. Dwight’s
collaborations with Horace Tapscott, Billy Higgins, Kamau Daaood and others have produced
some of the finest musical moments in Los Angeles in recent years - and his best is yet to come!
Like his mentors, Dwight is not content to use his music just to entertain people, although he is
quite a dynamic performer. He uses his music to bring people together, to bridge the gap between
the races, and to heal the human heart. He has received numerous awards for his humanitarian
efforts.

Terrace Martin
Terrace Martin is a notable musician, rapper and producer from the city
of Los Angeles and from the beginning of his career he has lent his skills
to artists such as Quincy Jones, Snoop Dogg, 9th Wonder, Talib Kweli and
many, many others.
Shattering the acknowledged rules of hip-hop production, he samples
everything from funk to jazz to classical to create fresh and original tracks.
His productions have made him one of the most sought after up and coming
producers on the streets of Los Angeles. His father was a jazz musician,
while his mother, was a gospel singer, destining him for a life in music.
“I grew up in the middle with only hip-hop,” Martin says. “My parents taught
me that there’s only good and bad music.” He began playing the piano at
the age of six and at age 13, a friend encouraged Terrace to learn to play
the saxophone and he did, finding one for $150 and learning to play it by
himself. His Godfather Stemz Hunter, also a saxophonist, suggested Terrace
enroll at Santa Monica High School to sharpen his musical chops. He walked
in not knowing what a scale was and soon found himself practicing up to seven hours a day.
Martin made a decision to transfer to Locke High, one of the LAUSD schools where the artistically inclined
gravitated to with a tough reputation within an earshot of gang-ridden Watts. While attending Locke High,
under the auspice of Reggie Andrews, Martin became first chair of the All-State jazz band.
As a child prodigy, Martin gained the interest of talk show host Jay Leno who provided a $30,000 scholarship
and purchased Martin’s first professional saxophone. Fresh out of high school, Martin attended Cal Arts but
decided school was not for him and opted, instead, to go professional. Martin was not only recognized by
Hollywood elite, he also found favor in the jazz world where world-renowned jazz musician, Billy Higgins,
made Martin a member of his World Stage All-Stars playing in the historic Leimert Park. From World Stage,
Martin began touring with Puff Daddy and God’s Property, presented by Kirk Franklin.
“I didn’t believe in suffering to play, like why do musicians gotta suffer to play? Eating Top Ramen isn’t
cool. I wanted to be main stream.” With that mentality guiding him, Terrace worked hard to get his beats
placed for major artists albums. He scored a minor hit with 213’s “Joystick,” and went on to land beats on
the Doggfather’s “Rhythm and Gangsta: The Masterpiece” and “Ego Trippin” albums.
Martin came from behind the board when he released his first project, The Demo and since has released a
number of critically acclaimed masterpieces.
Martin’s projects feature many guest appearances from the peers and mentors he has worked with who
have lent their expertise to encourage the budding artist’s career. That means verses and production from
the likes of Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, Pete Rock, DJ Quik, Kurupt, and plenty of others. In late 2010, Terrace
Martin and MTV Hip Hop POV host and radio personality Devi Dev released the EP “Here, My Dear”, inspired
by Marvin Gaye’s critically acclaimed 1978 album of the same name. The EP has appearances from Snoop
Dogg, Charlie Wilson, Kurupt, Problem, Kendrick Lamar and pianist Kenneth Crouch.
In 2010, he executive-produced Kurupt’s “Streetlights” album and formed a group called Melrose with LA
underground rap hero Murs that put out an album in early 2011. In 2012, Martin released a number of
projects, and in 2013 he graced the airwaves with his highly anticipated 3 Chord Fold, a fusion project
that brings together some of music’s best, hitting fans with a vibe reminiscent of his 2009 release Hear,
My Dear. While spending time with numerous luminaries in the studio, Terrace is one of the few artists
in hip-hop who seamlessly works with underground, emerging and established artists; often on the same
song. And it’s something he’s proud of. “To me, I just bridge the dope people with the dope people,” says
Martin. His position in hip-hop music is unbridled, but it is his jazz musicianship that separates his sound
from his peers.
From jazz to hip-hop, Martin’s role models include Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Jackie McLean, John Coltrane,
Herbie Hancock, Sonny Stitt, Grover Washington, Jr., Dr. Dre, DJ Quik, Battlecat, Premier, Pete Rock, and
1580 K-Day. “I started producing hip-hop tracks because it was the music of my time, but I never lost my
love for jazz,” Martin says.
Terrace Martin is currently a staff producer for legendary Quincy Jones, Snoop Dogg, Wiz Khalifa, Top Dawg
Entertainment (Kendrick Lamar) and also works closely with Dr. Dre.

Rickey Minor
“I’m a facilitator.” That’s how Rickey Minor sums up what he does; that
humble description, however, belies his status as a behind-the-scenes
music legend. Minor remains one of the most renowned musical
directors for television working today. He’s held down that post for
the Grammy Awards, the Super Bowl, and many other prestigious
awards shows and specials, earning five Emmy nominations in the
process.
Minor wrapped up a stint as musical director for American Idol
earlier this year. Minor previously spent nearly four years jamming
alongside Jay Leno as the leader of the famed Tonight Show Band.
Along the way, he’s worked with a veritable “who’s who” of popular
music across genres and generations. Miley Cyrus, Beyoncé, Aretha
Franklin, Alicia Keys, Justin Timberlake, Dixie Chicks, Frank Ocean,
Christina Aguilera, Bob Dylan, Garth Brooks, Mary J. Blige and Santana, represent some of the
notables Minor has helped guide throughout his career – indeed, that’s a partial list.
A multitalented hyphenate – Minor is an accomplished musician, composer, arranger, producer,
author, and studio owner in addition to his bandleader abilities – he shot into the A-list ranks after
spending a decade as Whitney Houston’s trusted musical director.
“Working with Whitney set the gold standard,” Minor explains. “The fact that I was associated with
her made artists like Beyoncé, Britney, Christina, and Jennifer Hudson want to work with me.”
Minor’s ascent remains an unlikely, ultimately inspirational success story. Born in Louisiana,
Minor’s mother brought him and his five siblings to settle in South Central Los Angeles’ notorious
Jordan Downs housing projects in Watts. Minor played clarinet and flute growing up, but took
up bass in his early teens as a member of a Jackson 5-influenced singing group, and played in a
number of cover acts and jazz bands throughout his youth. Despite this aptitude, Minor attended
UCLA on a full mathematics scholarship – the first in his family to attend college; however, he
soon departed higher education to devote himself to the study of music. Soon after, at just 20, he
was asked to join Gladys Knight and the Pips: he would spend three years as bassist for the soul
icons, touring extensively and playing on their 1983 album “Visions.” “I was young, hungry – and
inexpensive,” Minor says.
He later joined the original L.A. run of the acclaimed musical Dreamgirls, and toured with R&B star
Lou Rawls. But it was a random gig putting a backing band together to showcase a then-unknown
eighteen-year-old singer named Whitney Houston in 1982 that would forever change Minor’s
destiny. “John Simmons, who was the musical director for The Weather Girls called me and said,
‘I’ve got this girl who sings in my church who’s trying to get a record deal,’” Minor said. “We did
the showcase, and no one showed up. Every label passed.” A year later, everything changed,
however when eminent record-biz whiz Clive Davis had signed Houston to his Arista label. “Clive
told the crowd, ‘You’re looking at the next superstar – mark my words,” Minor recalls. Davis’
proclamation proved clairvoyant, and the rest is history.
Minor went on to play in Houston’s touring band and became her music director in 1989. “Whitney
called me and said, ‘I need your help – who do you think is the right person to be my new musical
director?’” Minor says. “I told her, ‘Me. I know where you’ve been, where you are now, and where
you need to be – and I can take you there.’ I’d never performed that role, but Whitney believed in
me and gave me that chance. She was like a sister to me.” Minor would go on to earn five Emmy
nominations for his works. His story is very extensive.

Paul Jackson, Jr., a talented and prolific jazz guitarist, composer, arranger
and Producer, is recognized for his unique sound and incredible range of
playing styles. His remarkable virtuosity gives the guitar a genuine voice
that stirs the soul.
IN THE BEGINNING
Born and based in Los Angeles and a member of numerous local bands from
his early teens, including a band composed of himself and his siblings, Paul
Jackson, Jr. very quickly established his skill and sensitivity and was soon
called upon to do many R&B and pop sessions, as well as jazz dates. Jackson
began his own solo recording career in the late 80s. Over the years his much
imitated distinctive style, and significant musical and technical skills made
him a favorite among live audiences and his becoming recognized by many
as the most recorded guitarist in the world.
INFLUENCES
Though Jackson never got to meet or work with one of his chief guitar/musical influences, Wes Montgomery,
he has forged professional relationships with all the others who touched his formative years. Guitarists
including Gary Bell, Greg Poree, Earl Klugh, George Benson, Ray Parker Jr., George Duke, Al McKay, Lee
Ritenour, along with his mentor, Patrice Rushen, have played key roles in his musical development and
professional career. Jackson’s career as a highly accomplished L.A. session player, spans multiple decades.
He has appeared on the recordings of superstars such as Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Barbara
Streisand, Celine Dion, Quincy Jones, Luther Vandross, Kenny Rogers, Barry White, Patti LaBelle and Luis
Miguel, to rockers such as Chicago and Elton John, to jazz-oriented players such as George Duke, George
Benson, Dave Koz, Al Jarreau, David Benoit, Marcus Miller and Kirk Whalum, Boney James, and to Christian

Jazz Festivals, including Berks, Montreaux, North Sea Jazz, Capital Jazz, JVC Hollywood Bowl, Playboy, JVC
Concord and many others.
NEW PROJECTS
The new project, Stories from Stompin’ Willie is a CD about musical friendships garnered over several
years. Specifically Jackson’s long time relationship with keyboard legend George Duke, who nicknamed
Jackson, Stompin’ Willie. This project features many of Paul’s old friends like Jeff Lorber, Jimmy Haslip,
Karen Briggs, Michael Lington, Tom Scott, Ndugu Chancler, Byron Miller, and John Beasley not to forget
Jackson’s longtime “boss” Patrice Rushen, and the entire Rickey Minor Band of American Idol and Tonight
Show fame. Also helping on the project are new friends like violin sensation Nicole Neely and recording
engineers, Erik Zobler, who has worked with George Duke for over two decades and Craig Burbidge, who
mixed Jackson’s first #1 radio single “It’s a Shame”, “I wanted to do a first class tribute to George (Duke).
He was my mentor, my coach, and my friend,” Jackson states. Featured on the CD are the re-recorded Duke
classics Geneva, Hip Pockets and That’s What She Said. Stories from Stompin’ Willie is sure to please… it
is a timeless homage, true George Duke fans will know and love —and promises to deliver a fresh twist on
classics that will rock the jazz world.

Poncho Sanchez
and his Latin Jazz Band
For more than three decades as both a leader and a sideman, conguero
Poncho Sanchez has stirred up a fiery stew of straight-ahead jazz,
gritty soul music, and infectious melodies and rhythms from a variety
of Latin American and South American sources.
Joining Sanchez on the 11-song set is multi-GRAMMY winning
trumpeter Terence Blanchard. It makes sense that, for this project,
Sanchez recruited fellow label mate Blanchard, a New Orleans native
who literally grew up amid the Cuban and Latin jazz scene and a
longtime fan of the music’s multicultural underpinnings.
“These two musicians were the pioneers of what is now known as Latin jazz,” says Sanchez.
“Chano Pozo was a genius. He’s considered the godfather of conga drummers, and he’s someone
whom I respect a great deal. And of course, Dizzy Gillespie was an iconic artist in American jazz.
I had the honor and pleasure of working with him on several occasions. These guys were the first
musicians to bring elements of Latin music to American jazz – which has resulted in some of the
greatest music of the last 50 or 60 years.”
“The great thing about this band is that they take a very traditional approach to Latin music,’ says
Blanchard. “They pay a lot of attention to the detail of the specific rhythms they’re playing, and
they understand the historical significance of keeping that heritage alive.”
Although born in Laredo, Texas, in 1951 to a large Mexican-American family, Sanchez grew up
in a suburb of L.A., where he was raised on an unusual cross section of sounds that included
straightahead jazz, Latin jazz and American soul. By his teen years, his musical consciousness
had been solidified by the likes of John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Cal Tjader, and Mongo Santamaria.
Along the way, he taught himself to play guitar, flute, drums and timbales, but eventually settled
on the congas.
At 24, after working his way around the local club scene for several years, he landed a permanent
spot in Cal Tjader’s band in 1975. Sanchez remained with Tjader until the bandleader’s death in
1982. That same year, he signed with Concord for the release of Sonando, an album that marked
the beginning of a musical partnership that has spanned more than 25 years and has yielded more
than two dozen recordings. Chano y Dizzy! is the latest installment in that ongoing partnership.
Sanchez, Blanchard and company set the tone early with an opening medley of lively Pozo tunes:
“Tin Tin Deo,” “Manteca” and “Guachi Guaro.” Blanchard delivers down some sultry trumpet lines
over Sanchez’s percussion and vocals, while the rest of the band lays down a solid and spicy
rhythmic bed throughout.
“To me, Latin jazz is the world’s greatest music,” says Sanchez. “It has the melodic and harmonic
sophistication of jazz and American standards, and the flavor and energy of Latin American
music. What I’m most proud of is that this music – while it may sound exotic at times – is from
America. It was born in New York City, when Chano Pozo met Dizzy Gillespie for the first time in
the mid-1940s. They created something that didn’t exist before in this country. I’m very proud to
take this music all over the world all the time.”

Roland H. Betts, Honoree
Founder, Jazz at Drew, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science
Roland H. Betts, founder of Jazz at Drew, is the person who initially conceived the idea of offering a quality lineup of jazz musicians in the heart of
the community. When he learned about the role music played in healing,
he designed Jazz at Drew to be a healing force in this community. “We
adopted the theme of building cultural bridges through music,” said Betts.
It also would be an excellent way to attract alumni back to the campus, as
well as to the Watts/Willowbrook community.
He wound up producing 18 annual fundraising concerts for the Charles R.
Drew University of Medicine and Science until 2008.
It is for that reason that we salute Roland Betts, at this historic return of Jazz at Drew in 2016.
Roland grew from Southern roots, was raised in Chicago, joined the Marine Corps and then went to play
center on Pepperdine University’s basketball team. He came to CDU in 1977 and served in a variety of
roles for 32 years.
In 1991, when he served as Director of Community Relations and Alumni Affairs, he was looking for
something to get CDU alumni involved. At the time, the University did not have any major events or fundraisers. Roland wanted the community at large to begin feeling comfortable about coming to activities in
the Watts/Willowbrook area. The task was by no means easy.
Many people didn’t want to come to the community via Imperial Highway or 120th Street. It was not until
the completion of the 105 Freeway that Jazz at Drew saw larger audiences and a change in demographics.
The first year, tickets were $10. Only about 150 people attended, but most got in free. In addition to
lining up support on the music side, Roland had to attend to the business of producing the event by securing sponsors. The first corporate sponsor was Arrowhead Mountain Spring Water. Then Honda and
Northrop Grumman stepped into the picture. “In addition to the support of these sponsors, we recognized the fact that we could not put on this fundraising concert without the dedication of more than 125
Drew employees, who volunteer to make the event work,” Roland cited in a program book from 2002.
Jazz at Drew is not just about highlighting the talents of established artists. Every year, young musicians from the local community are featured. Many of these individuals have been groomed by Reggie
Andrews, who served as the Artistic Director for Jazz at Drew over the years. For more than 30 years,
Reggie taught young inner city talent at Locke High School in Watts, where he worked as a music educator. He also coordinated the Los Angeles Multi-School Band, which would open up Jazz at Drew at Noon.
Roland pays tribute to these benefactors who believed in his dream: Former L.A. County Supervisor
Yvonne Braithwaite Burke, as well as Care 1st Health Plan, the late Dr. Gus Gill and his sponsorship of the
Gus Gill Gospel Hour, and Casper Glen, MD, Medical Director of the Lillian Mobley Health Pavilion, named
for the steadfast mother of the community who worked tirelessly to protect and grow CDU.
Roland Betts is now enjoying retirement with his wife Ayoluwa, daughter Ayanna, two sons, Baraka and
Jabari Betts and soon to be 12 grandchildren and a great-grandchild.
At CDU, we appreciate Roland for coming back as a consultant and steering Jazz at Drew through this
gargantuan task: the return of his beloved Jazz at Drew. Tonight is dedicated in tribute to Roland. From
all of us, thank you.
