Since 1995 the "CAUSE" of the Soul Drums Academy of
Percussive Arts was to offer an exciting and modern
program of education in drums and
percussion. With our Resource
Centre ensemble room as the focal
point and beehive of activity, many
special guests have contributed to
our cause and have engraved their
names on our "pole-of-fame!" Some
of these artists include John Riley,
Greg Bissonette, Glen Velez,
Babatunde Olatunji, Giovanni
Hidalgo, Terry Clarke, Trichi
Sankaran and Jeremy Taggart, to
name a few. Not only do their
names remain but their spirit and
integrity continue to resonate
with us. In Babatunde's words
"there is no gift like the
'present' as it is a gift from
above which enables us to
share our talents and skills
with the children of the future." It is very exciting to be
a part of the present activities here at Soul Drums.
Whether you are participating in any one of our
programs, retreats, recitals, private or group instruction,
you will come to realize that the learning process is as fun
as the teaching process. Whether you are a teacher or a
student, the cycle of rhythm is what feeds the SOUL and
leads us all towards the future, together.

Course Objective & Outline:
The purpose of creating this program is to provide the
serious student with a comprehensive overview of
drumset, snare drum, and percussion skills required
from basic performance to post secondary school
entrance exam levels. This will cover music theory,
reading notation, the P.A.S. International drum
rudiments, independence, coordination, stick control,
and brush technique, with special emphasis on
development of musical ideas and improvisational skills
explored within a variety of styles. P l a y i n g m u s i c
should always be fun, and the more we are able to
express ourselves at our chosen instrument, the more
enjoyable the music we create and perform as solo
artists or ensemble players will be. The journey from
freedom to discipline and back to freedom is most
rewarding for those who choose to study, and
information is on a "Need-To-Grow" basis. It is our
intention to provide you with the knowledge and skills
needed to help you reach your goals.
If you find yourself using tupperware as prospective toms,
frying pans as cymbals, and other kitchen utensils as
percussion accessories, we have answers for you and your
anxious parents! Call in to find out more about our private
drumset lessons and all the ways that our teachers can
make learning to play drums a fun experience!
At Soul Drums we firmly believe that it is never too late to
learn. Every day we live provides another opportunity for
us to learn something new or learn things we've always
wanted to do. We have private drumset and hand
drumming lessons for all ages and all levels. We are ready to
teach if you are ready to learn!

The graded course will include rudimentary theory and eartraining at no extra cost! If you are not in the Graded
Course Program and still wish to learn rudimental music
theory or even to learn how to read music notation call in to
book a lesson time.
What draws drum enthusiasts to Soul Drums, in addition to
our drumset lessons, is our keen interest and passion for
World Percussion. For those adventurous spirits who wish
to explore the complex polyrhythms of Africa (djembe),
Latin America (congas, bongos, timbales, etc), the Middle
East (doumbek), or further east to India (tabla), we can help
you discover a whole new world of rhythms!

Student Performance Recital 2000
“The Cultural Explosion", "The Healing Power of
Rhythm", "The Mentor Program" are just a few of the
themes explored in our ever growing and extremely
fulfilling Retreat Weekends. Hosted by Doug Sole, these
short weekend getaways provide all the experiences one
would desire, giving you a regular break from your
routine.
Our recitals encourage the students to develop confidence
as musicians. Performing for an audience is just as important
as practicing and playing for one's teacher. The recital offers
the invaluable experience of performing with either our live
studio band (made up of local Toronto Professional
musicians) or their favourite CD. This also provides an
opportunity for parents to see how well their children are
progressing and also for students to encourage and learn
from their peers. These recitals aim towards a fun
experience for both students and audience!
Since the first mainstay course “World Circle Drumming,”
drum circles and group activities rate very high on the fun
ratio. Soul Drums provides an open forum every Saturday
from 10:30 am to 12:00 noon in the ensemble room.
These drum circles will be facilitated by Joaquin Hidalgo
and/or Doug Sole with occasional special guests.
This intimate workshop is available for classes up to 40
students. It includes a performance demonstration, an
extensive "hands on" session, and all instruments are
provided. The program can be adapted for any age group
focussing on exposing and combining the power of selfconfidence with the joy of music making in a group setting.

The Soul Drums Outreach programs have effectively
grown to be internationally recognized. The range of
satisfied clients include Hospitals, Universities, Public and
Secondary Schools, Corporate businesses, therapists, and
public "health and wellness" conferences. This diverse
client base demonstrates the core value system we all
have in common, and are continually trying to reinforce.
Our programs have created, as well as spawned, internal
programs that have become exciting, fresh and accessible
alternatives.
This exciting multicultural experience is offered for the
school that wishes to expose a large group of students to
the event. This particular program is extremely flexible
and can offer a multitude of messages through the
presentation format. A large collection of instruments
from around the world will be played. Uses and origins will
also be discussed in a question and answer demonstration.
A hands-on session that becomes an improvised
performance piece facilitated to its maximum potential is
always a highlight of the event! This program is available in
solo, duet, or trio formats.
