Course Description and Objectives
Introduction and Overview
Welcome to Spanish 102! ¡Bienvenidos a la clase de Español 102! I am so pleased to see you continuing with
your voyage which began way back in Spanish 101! Are you not amazed at how much you have learned? Do you
not feel a sense of pride when you look back and consider how far you have come? – Well, you should!! For those
of you who have come back from the 101 course, I am certain you are eager to continue your online learning
adventure. For those who have just joined us, welcome, and prepare to become involved in the exciting
adventure and meeting your online helper: "Profesor Pedro Gómez Laserna"!!
As you already know, Spanish is one of the principal languages of the world and is one of the official languages of
the United Nations. Canada's relations with the Spanish speaking countries are steadily growing and with NAFTA,
new career opportunities are constantly being born for those who have a working knowledge of this beautiful
tongue. Indeed, your soon to be acquired expertise in all things Hispanic will open many doors to you. A great
deal of social science and humanistic research is presently being done in Latin America, as the industrialized
nations are now focusing their interests on development.
To begin the study of a new language is to embark on a challenging voyage. Knowledge of another language such
as French or Italian may be of some help but regardless of your other linguistic skills, you must be prepared to
dedicate a significant amount of time to the preparation and completion of each of your assignments. Language
study requires self-discipline and orderly work habits. "A bit everyday works better than a lot once in a while."
On-campus students have three hours of lecture time per week, plus one hour in the language lab, plus their own
personal homework time. So organize your time for this course accordingly. Demands on your time will be made,
but you need not worry – this course will also bring you many rewards! And you might even continue to have a
little fun!!
Objectives
Spanish 102 has been designed to ensure that once you have completed the work you WILL be able to:
Tell about things and events using the Past Tense, both using the preterite and imperfect tenses.
Understand the difference between question words: ¿qué? and ¿cuál? and prepositions: por and para
Give some orders and suggestions using the commands or imperative form.
Describe emotions, doubt, volition, by using the Subjunctive Mood.
Use past participles as adjectives and in perfect tenses.
Make plans for tomorrow by using the Future Tense.
Talk about possibilities using the Future and Conditional Tenses.
Know some more interesting cultural and historical facts.

the online tutorial regarding academic integrity you should do so as soon as possible. Undergraduate
students should see the Academic Integrity Tutorial and graduate students should see the Graduate Students and
Academic Integrity website.
Proper citations are part of academic integrity. Citations in CEL course materials usually follow CEL style, which
is based on APA style. Your course may follow a different style. If you are uncertain which style to use for an
assignment, please confirm with your instructor or TA.
For further information on academic integrity, please visit the Office of Academic Integrity.
Discipline
A student is expected to know what constitutes academic integrity to avoid committing an academic offence, and
to take responsibility for his/her actions. A student who is unsure whether an action constitutes an offence, or
who needs help in learning how to avoid offences (e.g., plagiarism, cheating) or about “rules” for group
work/collaboration, should seek guidance from the course instructor, academic advisor, or the undergraduate
Associate Dean. For information on categories of offences and types of penalties, students should refer to Policy
71 - Student Discipline. For typical penalties, check Guidelines for the Assessment of Penalties.
Appeals
A decision made or penalty imposed under Policy 70 - Student Petitions and Grievances, (other than a petition) or
Policy 71 - Student Discipline, may be appealed if there is a ground. A student who believes he/she has a ground
for an appeal should refer to Policy 72 - Student Appeals.
Grievance
A student who believes that a decision affecting some aspect of his/her university life has been unfair or
unreasonable may have grounds for initiating a grievance. Read Policy 70 - Student Petitions and Grievances,
Section 4. When in doubt please be certain to contact the department’s administrative assistant who will provide
further assistance.
Final Grades
In accordance with Policy 19 - Access To and Release of Student Information, the Centre for Extended Learning
does not release final examination grades or final course grades to students. Students must go to Quest to see all
final grades. Any grades posted in Waterloo LEARN are unofficial.
