Period 1,2,3
State Indicator/Competency: Use square root and cube root symbols to represent solutions to equations of the
form x² = p and x³ = p, where p is a positive rational number. Evaluate square roots of small perfect squares and
cube roots of small perfect cubes. Know that the square root of 2 is irrational.
Instructional Objective(s): 1.3 Square Roots Students will be able to simplify square roots with 80% accuracy.
Materials: worksheet (Simplifying Square Roots)
Method of Instruction: demonstration
Activities: Past: Solve square roots; Future: Simplifying trigonometric ratios
A square-root expression is in simplest form when the radicand has no perfect square factors (except 1).
Ex. 1) Simplify √12.
√12 = √4 × 3 = √4 × √3 = 2√3
Ex. 2) Simplify √48.
√48 = √16 × 3 = √16 × √3 = 4√3
Ex. 3) Simplify −√92 = −√4√23 = −2√23
Closure:
 Simplify √24.
√24 = √4 × 6 = √4 × √6 = 2√6
