PARCC Results 2016 Presented by: Dr. Joseph Meloche, Superintendent Dr. Farrah Mahan, Director of Curriculum Mrs. Faith Holmgren, Teacher Coordinator Mrs. Valerie Schmid-Sadwin, Coordinator of Research and Assessment September 2016 Vision for Public Education In New Jersey “New Jersey will educate all students to prepare them to lead productive, fulfilling lives. Through a public education system that is seamlessly aligned from preschool to college, students will gain the requisite academic knowledge and technical and critical thinking skills for life and work in the 21st century.” The NJ High School Redesign Steering Committee New Jersey’s Statewide Assessment Program • In 2015, New Jersey adopted the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) to replace HSPA and previous assessments in the elementary and middle school in language arts and mathematics. • Students took PARCC English Language Arts and Literacy Assessments (ELA/L) in grades 3 – 11. • Students took PARCC Mathematics Assessments in grades 3 – 8 and End of Course Assessments in Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II. They measure how well students are performing against the new state standards that guide math and English language arts instruction. • The PARCC tests are only one of several measures, including report card grades and in-class performance, that are used to determine a student's academic achievement. They do not impact a student’s GPA. • The score reports are a valuable tool for parents and teachers. The report provides a deeper level of information that can be used to better understand where students are doing well and where they need additional support. This helps teachers and parents support students. 9 10 Five Performance Levels PARCC uses five performance levels that delineate the knowledge, skills, and practices Place a purple frame around images students are able to demonstrate: Level 2: Level 3: Level 4: Level 5: Level 1: Met Exceeded Did Not Yet Partially Met Approached Expectations Expectations Expectations Expectations Meet Expectations 12 13 14 UnderstandTheScore.org Cherry Hill Data At A Glance Cherry Hill Data At A Glance • Cherry Hill PARCC ELA participation rates ranged from 92% in grade 3 to 47% in grade 11 based on testing site. Districtwide there was in increase in participation rates, however there is still a low participation rate in grade 11, below 50%. The low participation rates in both 10th and 11th grades make overall interpretation of student achievement based on PARCC difficult for the those grade levels for our district. • The State showed similar or improved scores from 2015 to 2016 for every subject, every grade level except ELA 11. Cherry Hill results were more varied. • In ELA, in grade levels 3-7, the percentage of Cherry Hill students scoring at a level 4 or 5, meeting or exceeding expectations, was higher than the State in each grade level. Cherry Hill Data At A Glance • In Math, at all grade levels except grade 8, the percentage of Cherry Hill students scoring at a level 4 or 5, meeting or exceeding expectations, was higher than the State. • Grade 7 and 8 Mathematics results exclude the results of 7th and 8th grade students who took Algebra 1, Intro to Functions, or Geometry. Those students’ results are included in the Algebra 1 and Geometry results. • Increased student enrollment in Algebra courses in grade 8 in 2015-2016 reduced the number of students taking grade 8 Math. This could be a primary reason for the significant decline of the grade 8 Math scores. Evidence Statement Tables describe the knowledge and skills that an assessment item or a task elicits from students. These are aligned directly to the Common Core State Standards. What are Evidence Statement Reports? Evidence Statement Reports are data reports provided to the District which rank the standards in order based upon how students performed on questions within each standard. The ranking goes from left to right, hardest to easiest, based upon student performance. ‘Evidence Statement Reports are useless if only Administration has access to them. We need to get them into the hands of teachers. These reports are not about evaluating the teachers, but about evaluating the standards.’ -Robin Knutelsky, NJ Department of Education (June 2016) Example of Evidence Statement Report How can Evidence Statement Tables and Reports be used to Inform Instruction? • District and School Level Data • Data by subgroups and categories • Item analysis using Evidence Statements • Instruction • Maps • Data • Reflection PARCC Data Evidence Tables Curricular Alignment Standards • Using the PARCC report to review the tables and statements • Understanding the evidence that students are to produce as mastery of the standard • Reviewing the standard and determining what the standard “looks like” in curriculum and instruction Framing the Conversations About Evidence Statement Tables & PARCC Results • • • • What strengths, weaknesses and discrepancies do you see in the data? What instructional practices or shifts are prevalent that link to the PARCC data? Where might you now shift instructional practices? Are there other assessments that link to the same findings confirmed in the PARCC data? • What additional professional resources are necessary to do your work? 2016-2017 Assessment Schedule
