Next we assess where we need to go. We monitor our progress along the way so we can personalize learning for each student. Finally, we assess where we are at the end so we can make decisions about our instruction for next year. How Closely Do Teachers Look at Data? Questions/Answers http://todaysmeet.com/IHaveDataNow So YOU have your data… Now What? Students have their own data notebook to collect, record and analyze their progress. Student data notebooks are divided into sections, one for each of the subject areas, a testing section, a personal goal section, and a leadership goal section. The testing sections houses the students MAP progress. Students keep track of where they have been in previous years and where they are headed this year. After each testing session they reflect on their progress and what changes need to happen to reach their next goal. They are always monitoring their own progress to reach the goals they have established. The personal and leadership sections of the data notebook allow students to set goals that are not just about academics or data, but for ways they want to grow as a leader in and out of the classroom and how their personal conduct contributes to reaching goals they have set. In ELA, students were given the opportunity to break apart their assessments into smaller pieces to analyze which piece they needed to focus. They reflect on their progress and the end of each unit. This helps them to set short term goals to reach their long term goal. How did this change impact our students scores? Where do we still need to go: The other content areas do not have as much division for the students to analyze their exact progress. We recognize that this is an area that we need to provide that opportunity for students to be able to self analyze their performance. Why does this matter? It enables students to be able to articulate their own learning, and own their data the way we must. And they are PROUD to meet their goals! Give The Data Back to the Kids! Putting all of the pieces together… Technology Performance Tasks Why a Performance Task? •Addresses Common Core Standards •Addresses the ELA Shift in Text Complexity •Requires Students to Use Multiple Sources and Resources •Addresses Speaking and Listening Standards •Addresses Argumentative Writing Our First Attempt: What the Students Thought… What We Learned: -We had not explicitly taught how to write an argumentative piece and the students struggled with the process. Most students wrote an opinion piece. We realized that we had not shown the students how to document their opinions with evidence to build their argument -We realized we gave them too much! BUT We realized that EVERY learner benefitted from the use of videos, text, and collaboration.
