Tours Saturday, November 1 Tour 1: 11.30am to 5.30pm Tour 2: 1pm to 7.30pm Teotitlán del Valle DAY OF THE DEAD Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is one of Oaxaca’s most beloved and culturally rich festivals. Gastronomy, tradition, and color combine to enchant visitors and locals alike. This year En Vía will be offering a special tour that will not only showcase our program of responsible tourism and microfinance, but also introduce the visitor to the intimate Day of the Dead traditions of local communities and families in Oaxaca. Price The tour is $70 US dollars per person. This price includes transportation, lunch, and snacks. We will use your remaining tour fee to provide interest-‐free microloans for the women in our program. On Saturday, the deceased family members, or “Los Muertos” arrive to visit the living. We will learn about the traditions of the day, which include making and eating tamales and preparing beautiful altars or offerings. We will visit the graveyard with our host family to celebrate the arrival of Los Muertos. During the tour, we will get to know the art of tapetes (rugs), which Teotitlán is renowned for, and see a demonstration of the traditional wool preparation, dyeing, and weaving. Monday, November 3 Tour 3: 1pm to 7.30pm San Miguel del Valle. On Monday, the deceased spirits, or “Los Muertos”, conclude their visit and depart the living world. We will have the chance to share in a special farewell meal, learn about the particular traditions of the family, including visiting of different family altars, and accompany the family and community to the graveyard to farewell Los Muertos. We’ll also have the chance to get to know San Miguel’s special traditions of textile and embroidery, including a demonstration of the tapetes (rugs), and the preparation, and weaving of the wool.
