Terry has the well-trained ability to memorize declarations, documents, and speeches. It is truly fascinating to listen to him recite long passages without the use of notes or prompts. Perhaps his most stirring speech this night was General George Patton’s address to his men as they prepared for the Terry Smith and President Amber D-Day Invasion in June 1944. Thank you Terry for a very entertaining evening! Members Duane Limpert and Ken Neuzil worked with members of our Key Club and advisers Laura Thogmartin and Lisa Rosenburg on Saturday November 7th raking leaves for eight community folks who needed the help in getting their leaves to the curb. Between 20 and 25 Key Club kids worked very hard and in the space of about four hours, cleaned eight yards. Thank you Key Club members and advisers! (Continued on page 2) Our November 9th meeting was dedicated to fire safety. Jerry Cifranic, a 23 year fire fighter and paramedic veteran spoke to the club about fire prevention in the home in general, but more specifically about the need to replace outdated smoke detectors with the newer photoelectric models. These Jerry Cifranic and President Amber photoelectric units respond faster to smoldering fires, are less prone to nuisance false alarms from cooking and steam. Thank you Jerry for your hot tips (pun intended) about home fires. Also at this meeting, former member John Kiley made available single stars cut from American flags bound for proper destruction. This noble act was in honor of Veterans Day on November 11th. Led by President Amber Pierce-Smith, and with the aid of NOHS Key Club, we packed 50 shoe- Everyone hard at work filling shoe boxes boxes full of items for kids in the Third World as a part of Operation Christmas Child on November 16th. Locally, this wonderful effort is directed by the Friends Church. Besides for the goods donated by Kiwanis members, the club also pays $7 per box for delivery expenses. Thank you Amber for your efforts in this worthy cause. Members Glenn Knight, Jim Yager, Howard Luke, Dave Dillon, and Ken Neuzil attended the Key Club meeting on November 19th. Key Club members were thanked for their work on raking leaves earlier in the month and their help in Operation Christmas Child. We also discussed the upcoming Breakfast with Santa and emphasized how important the kids from the NOHS Key Club are to the success of that morning. The five Kiwanians were joined by Stan Ball later for breakfast at Canary’s. It was indeed good to have Stan back with us. Later that same day, Ken Neuzil, Linda Cleary, Barb Schirhart, Vera Brewer, Tom Herbster, and Bob Wendt joined other community members at the annual President’s Dinner held at the Community Cabin. The monthly Board Meeting was conducted on November 23rd. Minutes of that meeting have been emailed to members under a separate cover. A collection for the Oxcart Food Pantry produced $52. Our fourth annual Acronym Game Night (okay, Jim Yager, acronyms and abbreviations!) was held on November 30th. Needless to say (but Typical table at work on 75 problems! we’ll say it anyway), Frank Miller and his Key Club partner, Zach Neal won again with 67 correct answers out of 75 problems. Congratulations Dr. Miller and Zach Neal. Of all the Kiwanis functions through the year, none involve virtually every member of the club and have as wide an appeal as our Breakfast with Santa, this year held on December 5th. With the financial backing of Walid Jamal and the Dover Insurance Agency and the wonderful interaction of the NOHS Key Club with area children, the morning was a complete success. Key Club advisers Laura Thogmartin and Lisa Rosenburg worked with the Key Club members to make eve- It was all about kids - large and small ry child’s day a special one. And, of course, we have to thank Santa for a great job! Some day Dave Dillon will get his lazy you-know-what out of bed in time to help out that day. We’ll see. It’s time to begin thinking about our annual Cornhole Tournament again and Gretchen Schuler brought us up to date on this at our November 7th meeting. It is scheduled for April 9th at St. Clarence. We need teams to sign up quickly to reserve their spot, but we also need some major sponsor donations. Last year this tournament (Page 2) (Continued on page 3) (Continued from page 2) produced over $3000 in scholarships for North Olmsted graduates. Gretchen urged all of us to seek out possible sponsors. Thank you Gretchen for all you do for this event. Also at this meeting, Ken presented the preliminary numbers on the Breakfast with Santa and also reported that we now have enough money in the Tribute Bench Fund to purchase one bench. It was decided to inscribe it with “North Olmsted Kiwanis.” The final meeting of 2015 was the annual Christmas Dinner, held on December 14th. Mae served appetizers of shrimp, prosciutto ham, meatballs, and cheese and crackers, followed by AND FINALLY……….. As we begin something new (2016), we might want to look back and re-read the wisdom of one of the brightest Founding Fathers – Ben Franklin. A countryman between two lawyers is like a fish between two cats. A good conscience is a continual Christmas. A slip of the foot you may soon recover, but a slip of the tongue you may never get over. All human situations have their inconveniences. We feel those of the present but neither see nor feel those of the future; and hence we often make troublesome changes without amendment, and frequently for the worse. All would live long, but none would be old. An investment in knowledge always pays the best interest. Anger is never without Reason, but seldom with a good One. One of many fancy tables Kiwanians like to handle money her usual splendid beef wellington. Cherry pie with ice cream made the meal complete! Linda Cleary brought in some seasonal CD music for background, President Amber Pierce-Smith gave us a quiz on Christmas and presented a lucky winner at each table a really cool glass block centerpiece, and Charlotte Creel produced three Christmas carols and led us in the singing of them. Thank you Linda, Charlotte, and Amber for helping to make the evening special. INVOCATION AND WORK SCHEDULE At 20 years of age the will reigns, at 30 the wit, at 40 the judgment.
