As part of Education Month
in Paramount, the annual Pennies
for PEP fundraiser took place in
the classrooms of the Paramount
Unified School District.
Students, faculty and staff
from throughout the District
teamed up to help out. All K-8thgrade schools had containers for
a period of four days in September when everyone could deposit
their spare change from home
if they wanted to. Seventeen
schools and nearly 250 classes
participated, with many challenging each other to see who
could bring in the most. The top
class would be thrown a pizza
party with the Mayor and PUSD
Board President.
The r esp o nse was o ver whelming, with contributions
reaching an incredible $10,300
– over one million pennies!
The money will go toward
funding PEP scholarships. The
amount raised will cover three
entire scholarships, 12 of which
have been given to Paramount
students for the last three years.
Each recipient is awarded $3,000
to be used for tuition, fees, books
and supplies in pursuit of any
degree or certificate program
offered at a two- or four-year
college or approved technical
school. Winners are selected
based on their academic record,
a written essay, financial need,
extracurricular activities, work
or volunteer experience and future goals.
With this year’s Pennies For
PEP, congratulations are in order
for Mrs. Perez’s class from Leona
Jackson Elementary for best design of a collection container.
And the top moneymaking class
was Ms. Rivera’s at Collins Elementary, which scooped out
their cookies jars to the tune of
$234!
The City and the School District extend sincere thanks and
appreciation to all of the great
kids, teachers and staff who gave
so generously and thoughtfully
in this fund drive.

Seniors Thanksgiving
Dinner This Month
Be sure and mark Thursday,
November 16 on your calendar as
our Seniors Thanksgiving Dinner.
The annual celebration honors the
elders of our community with a
free day of entertainment, dancing, raffle prizes and a fine meal
with all the trimmings. It takes
place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in
the Paramount Park gym. Business leaders from the Paramount
Rotary Club and students from
Paramount High School’s Corsairs
will be serving the meals and local sponsors will be on hand with
information about services they
offer. Musical entertainment will
be provided by the James Tobin
Band.
We usually get upwards of
1,000 guests, and it’s always
a great time. Hope to see you
there.
8th Annual Holiday Tree
Lighting
I hope you’ll also come and
enjoy the City’s 8th Annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony
Wednesday, November 29, at
6:00 p.m.
The festive event, at the Pond
on the corner of Jackson St. and
Paramount Blvd., will feature musical entertainment, refreshments
and a warm and wonderful time
for all.
For more information, call
(562) 220-2121.
The latest figures are in – according to a recent report in the
Long Beach Business Journal,
Paramount had the largest retail
sales increase from 2003-2004
in the region. A shopping surge
from $320 million to $369 million
represented a 15.27% rise. Out of
13 areas cities, only Los Alamitos
and Long Beach also achieved a
double-digit jump during that
time. The statewide increase was
9.35%.
Dating back to 1995, Paramount has seen an explosive
98.41% upswing in retail sales. All
of this is due to sound planning
and creating a good environment
that has attracted major stores
like Wal-Mart and The Home Depot. It’s also a testament to the
healthiness of the small entrepreneurs who have been in the City
for many years, and who continue
to grow with us.
2121. You can also get all sorts of
great information about the City
on our website at www.paramountcity.com.
Special Thanks
I would like to extend a
note of appreciation to all the
community members, School
District and Sheriff’s Department
personnel, and City staff who
combined to make the recent Safe
and Smart Fair such a wonderful
success.
Also, a word of thanks to all
the kids and parents who turned
out for a day of fun at the City’s
yearly Huck Finn Fishing Derby
at Spane Park, along with members of the Paramount Elks who
helped out as usual with removing the fish from the hooks and
cooking hot dogs for the big
crowd.
These events are among the
many things that make being a
part of the Paramount community
so rewarding.
Family Excursions
The City’s Recreation Department has a couple of fun
outings coming up. On Saturday, November 18 there will
be a trip back in time to Riley’s
Farm, which gives you a taste
of what life was like in the 19th
century. Visitors will be able to
feed animals, take a hayride, dip
a candle and press apple cider.
The adventure runs from 9 a.m.
to 3 p.m. Cost is $12 for adults
and $9 for kids 3-12.
For a somewhat spicier time,
we’ll be heading out to the International Tamale Festival in
Indio on Saturday, December 2.
This event features contests, entertainment and, of course, lots
of tasty tamales. We’ll be gone
from 7:00 a.m. till 7:00 p.m., and
the cost will be $5 per person,
though you’ll probably want to
bring some spending money.
To make reservations – or for
more information on all the activities, sports, classes and programs
that our Recreation Department
offers – please call (562) 220-

Peaceful Holiday
Celebrations
As we head into the holiday
season, let’s all remember that
parties, while of course enjoyable, can sometimes get out of
hand and bother neighbors. In
Paramount, if a call for disturbing the peace comes into the
Sheriff’s Station, deputies will
go to the location and issue a
first warning notice. If a return
visit is made within the next 24
hours, a violation notice is given.
In this case, the responsible
party incurs all costs spent to
shut the party down – whether
it takes two patrol cars or even
a helicopter.
If there are such disturbances coming from the same location
over an extended period of time,
deputies will focus on solving the
problem with those causing it.
Deputies, also, do not divulge the
identity of any residents making
the complaint calls.
For more information, call
the Paramount Sheriff’s Station at
(562) 220-2002.
Safe Holiday Shopping
As you begin your holiday
gift buying excursions, here are
a few easy, safety-related tips to
keep in mind.
• Always be alert and aware
of your surroundings.
• Always park in a well lighted area.
• Never leave packages, bags,
cell phones, purses or other valuable items in plain sight in your
vehicle. Place these items in your
trunk, where they cannot be seen
from outside your car.
• Carry small amounts of
cash. Your front pocket is ideal
for carrying cash.
• Never leave children in the
car unattended.
• If possible try to shop in
pairs. Robbers often focus on, and
target, solo shoppers.
• Never buy items from
someone who approaches you in
a parking lot. Often these items
are stolen.
Lakewood Station Phone
Number
Here’s another reminder that,
due to its expansion, the Lakewood Sheriff’s Station will be
changing all of its phone numbers,
including the main line. That new
number is (562) 623-3500, so
make the change on your personal
phone number list. The old number, (562) 866-9061, will remain
in effect for at least two years to
give everyone enough time to
transition to the new number.
Soroptimist Members
Accept City Proclamation
At its Oct. 17 meeting, the Paramount City Council offered support for two
causes championed by the Soroptimist Club. Mayor Daryl Hofmeyer declared
October as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and November as
End Domestic Violence Month in Paramount. With breast cancer awareness,
the Mayor noted that the message is one of early detection and prevention.
With domestic violence, the goal is to eliminate the problem and the damage
it causes, and to assist the victims. Accepting a proclamation from Mayor
Hofmeyer on behalf of the Paramount Soroptimists were Councilmember
Diane J. Martinez and Vice Mayor Peggy Lemons, both club members.

Another Mile-stone
From left: Service Supervisor Chuck Pierce, General Manger Steve Wood
and Parts and Service Supervisor Jim Friend.
Ford West celebrates
another mile-stone, grossing over 1.3 Million Dollars
in parts and service for one
month. Their Success is due
to (you guessed it) Customer
Service and Satisfaction. This
family owned and operated
dealership prides itself in
having the Best Ratings in
the Industry. The Automobile Club of So. Cal. gives
Ford West a “99%” Customer
Excellence Rating out of the
600 Authorized AAA repair
facilities in the region, and
the Better Business Bureau
awarded Ford West with
a “Double AA” rating for
Truth in Advertising, Customer Service, and Satisfaction. Ford Motor Company
rewarded the Dealership
with their highest honor,
The Presidents Award, again
for Service and Satisfaction.
On any given day you’ll see
Steve Wood (owner) greeting
people in the service drive
and the customer lounge.
Steve explains a large part
of our success has been attributed to teamwork and
having the best technicians
in the region.
Ford West also services
Lincoln and Mercury’s.
Also, located on Ford
West’s 101⁄2 acre site is a
separate division dedicated
to Fleet Service. We are Certified for many types of diesels
engines, transmissions and
suspension systems and can
accommodate large or small
trucks and motor homes.
A few of our accounts include: Orange County Rapid

Looking for a Job?
Paramount SASSAFA Can Help
Many residents in the City
of Paramount do not know there
is a public agency that can help
them with employment and training needs. But those who do come
across the Paramount SASSFA
Employment and Training Center
usually peak their heads in to find
out what SASSFA is all about. One of
those curious Paramount residents
was Christina who came in to ask
about the services SASFFA has to
offer and in her search found that
it was exactly what she needed.
Christina attended the weekly
orientation held on Tuesdays and
Thursdays to find out more about
SASSFA and the WIA program. The
center caught Christina’s interest
and she started coming in almost
everyday to job search and update
her resume. She and many of the
walk-in clients who come into the
center utilize all the resources
available: the computer lab, fax,
copier and phone and also plenty
of job postings.
One day Christina decided
to attend an interviewing and
resume building workshop conducted by the Job Developer.
Christina found that the workshop
was very helpful and gave her
several ideas on how to format
her resume so that it would be
appealing to employers. She also
learned about the do’s and don’ts
when interviewing for a job.
That same week, Christina
went on an interview armed with
all the information she learned
from the workshop, and was offered the job on the spot. Christina attributed her new job offer
to the new interviewing skills she
learned.
“Actually, practicing with
sample interview questions during
the roll-playing part of the workshop really helped me see what I
was doing wrong in an interview
and I was able to correct it and I
got the job,” said Christina.
Christina has been working at
her job for a few weeks now and
said that she was very lucky to
have found the SASSFA Employment and Training Center. Christina is now an office manager at a
Dental Office.
Planning Your Ads
The success of your advertising depends entirely on how
well you’ve planned it. There are some basic principles every
business owner should follow to ensure your advertising dollars are well spent.
No mater what media you choose, make sure you identify
your business fully and clearly, don’t forget to include your
address and telephone number. Your radio and TV ads should
identify your sponsorship as fully and often as possible with
out interfering with the message. If your business has a logo,
use it in all visual ads.
In print ads use graphics and a typeface that will build
almost immediate recognition for your firm. Ever notice that
supermarket chain ad? You can identify it before you even see
the store name of the logo.l
Make your copy easy to understand. The major elements
of the message should be in short phrases and simple words.
Get the main message in the first part of the ad. Go right to
the point.
Plan the ad around the single purpose you have in mind.
If the message needs reinforcement with other ideas, keep
them subtle. If you have several important things to say, use
a different idea for each one and run the ads on succeeding
days or weeks.
Treat your ad seriously. For the small business owner, humor is both risky and difficult to write. Play it safe. Concentrate
on your basic message.
If you have questions about the content and effectiveness
of your advertising, call your local SCORE chapter or set up
an appointment with a business counselor at the Paramount
Chamber Business Resource Center, call 562.634.3980.

PEP TALKS
Hundreds Begin
4th Year of MESA
Last month, the latest group
of Paramount middle school and
high school students began what
has become a yearly pilgrimage
on Saturday mornings to California State University, Long Beach
for the MESA Program. Nearly
300 kids have chosen to give up
sleeping in for a series of ten
weekend workshops to study and
experiment with mathematics,
engineering, and science.
It’s the fourth straight year
that Paramount has taken part
in the program through the efforts of the Paramount Education
Partnership (PEP), which in turn
is working with Long Beach State’s
College of Engineering. This year,
the METRANS Transportation
Center, a partnership between
USC and Long Beach State that is
affiliated with the federal Department of Transportation, is funding MESA in Paramount. Plus, the
group is helping to start a Future
Engineers Club at Paramount
High School, which will prepare
students for the challenges of
engineering and establish a direct connection between the high
school, USC and CSULB.
Since math and science educational requirements are now
more stringent than in the past,
and admissions standards are
also on the rise, MESA strives
to make students competitively
eligible for the most rigorous
colleges and universities.
Included in the workshops
are the development of Individual Academic Plans for each
student, study skills training,
SAT/PAT preparation, parent
leadership training and many
more specialized features. An
extra benefit for students is the
exposure they get to life on a
university campus.
The students, as well as
the Paramount Unified School
District teachers taking part in
MESA, are to be commended for
their dedication and for expanding their educational goals.

Paramount-Tepic Sister City
Paramount-Tepic Sister City members President Ana Flores, Cira Garces
and Ben Dominguez recently spent two weeks in Tepic as guest of the City.
During their visit they attended the Santa Ana Fiesta where they saw a
Reboso exhibition and later a dinner party in their honor. The representatives
presented a gift basket to Tepic’s Mayor Manuel Cota Jimenez and $3,000.00
which is to be used for clinic construction, clothes, toys and groceries for
the needy.
