LENGTH
A quarter is about 1”
wide. A comic book is
about 1’ tall. A teacher’s
desk is about 1 yard
deep.
A dime is about 1 cm
wide. A table is about 1
meter tall.
There are 5280’ in one
mile.
There are 1,760 yards in
one mile.
CONVERSIONS
Feet to Inches: Multiply by 12
3 ft. x 12 = 36 in.
Yards to Feet: Multiply by 3
3 yd. x 3 = 9 ft.
Yard to Inches: Multiply by 36
3 yd. x 36 = 108 in.
Miles to Feet: Multiply by 5,280
2 mi. x 5280 = 10,560 ft.
Miles to Yards: Multiply by 1,760
2 mi. x 1,760 = 3,520 yd.
Meters to Centimeters: Multiply by 100
10 m x 100 = 1,000 cm
Kilometers to Meters: Multiply by 1,000
4 km x 1,000 = 4,000 m
Inches to Feet: Divide by 12
36 in. ÷ 12 = 3 ft.
Feet to Yards: Divide by 3
9 ft. ÷ 3 = 3 yd.
Inches to Yards: Divide by 36
108 in. ÷ 36 = 3 yd.
Feet to Miles: Divide by 5.280
10,560 ft. ÷ 5.280 = 2 mi.
Yards to Miles: Divide by 1,760
3,520 yd. ÷ 1,760 = 2 mi.
Centimeters to Meters: Divide by 100
1,000 cm ÷ 100 = 10 m
Meters to Kilometers: Divide by 1,000
4,000 m ÷ 1,000 = 4 km
WEIGHT/MASS

A cookie weighs about 1 oz.
A textbook weights about 1 lb.
There are 2,000 lbs. in a Ton
A penny’s mass is about 1 gm
A brick’s mass is about 1 kg
PERIMETER/CIRCUMFERENCE/AREA
Finding the perimeter of a polygon- a shape with at least three sides- is done by adding up each side.
A regular polygon is equilateral
and equiangular
P = 4 x length
P = 2 x (length +width)
Circumference = 2𝝅R
Formula: Area = Length x Width
For a complex polygon
break it into simpler pieces:
A=
𝟒𝒙𝟔
𝟐
= 12 ft.2
A = 4 x 4 = 16 ft.2
Area = 12 + 16 = 28 ft.2
CAPACITY and VOLUME
Capacity is how much a container of any type can hold.
It takes 8 ounces to make a cup, 2 cups to make a pint,
4 cups to make a quart, and 4 quarts to make one gallon.
TIME: Seconds, Minutes, Hours, Days, Months, Years and Centuries
The time on this clock is 3:00. If it is after midnight, but before noon, it’s 3:00 AM.
If it’s after noon, but before midnight, it’s 3:00 PM.
Time can be converted: 75 minutes is the same as 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Some special clocks show
all 24 hours of the day.
Calendars measure days, weeks and months.
There are 7 days in one week and about 4 weeks in most months.
There are 12 Months in a Year
There are 52 Weeks in a Year
There are 100 Years in a Century
