6.
At Bats: Any time a batter goes up to the plate and he gets a hit or
gets out (thrown out at first, strikes out, or fly ball caught) it counts
for an “at bat”.
In 2007, the Whitecaps outfielder Brennan Boesch became 5th on
the Whitecaps all-time at bats leader board. He had 104 singles, 19
doubles, 4 triples, 10 home runs, 81 strikeouts and was out 295
times. How many at-bats did he have?
7.
Batting Average: A player’s batting average is a measure of how
often they reach a base with a safe hit (a single, double, triple or
home run.) To calculate a player’s batting average, divide the
number of safe hits by the total number of at bats.
Example: Cameron Maybin has 87 hits in 293 at bats for a .297
batting average
87 ÷ 293 = .297
Given the numbers in problem #6, what was Brennan Boesch’s
batting average for 1997?
(104+19+4+10) ÷ (104+19+4+10+81+295) =
137 ÷ 513 = .267
