President's Column
Thank you to all those who helped make our April open house a big success. We had donors of money and food as well as
trainers and demonstrators. I was pleased with the turnout of members and guests. I received lots of compliments from many
guests who stated how happy they were that we invited them and I think we picked up a member or two.
I need to share a story: My son Rich has a friend (came to the field for a visit once). He has been heavily involved with RC
cars for quite some time. He has experience with and knowledge of LiPo batteries and is aware of safety issues surrounding
them. Just recently, he was charging a LiPo. The battery being charged was in a LiPo bag. His charger has auto shut off. For
some reason (complete details not in yet), the Lipo ignited. The ensuing fire not only burned through the LiPo bag, but burned
his garage down to the ground. Fortunately his garage was detached from the house and the house was not damaged. This
incident obviously brings up some questions and I don’t have the answers yet. What I know so far, is that apparently he was
not nearby when the charging was in progress. To me this is a major mistake. It’s possible this incident could have been
prevented if he was close by during the charging. Moral of the story is NEVER leave charging batteries unattended and don’t
rely on your LiPo bag as being 100% fire proof.
Our safety record has been good this past month. I’m happy about that. Let’s keep the good work in that area. I hope to see
a big turnout at our general meeting on the 11th. In the mean time, fly safe, fly often and most of all have fun!

Secretaries Quips
FDRCM Members, summer is nearly in full bloom and that means more great flying days for all of us. I, for one, look
forward to the coming months and the clear skies.
Hey gang, we have had several new members join the roster in recent months, so you may see some new faces out
and about. Say hello and offer any assistance you can provide.
The open-house is past now and the food for the event was spectacular with no one leaving hungry. Thanks goes out
to the Pres for his generosity in providing supplies for the event. The vendor who cooked the food is also willing to pay
us a visit at the float fly.. so stay tuned for updates as they develop.
If your club shirt is looking shabby you can get a new one at an affordable price - simply ask yours truly or mention to a
member of the EC board and you can begin to look sharp.
Lastly, please note that the sun is more intense as we move into the summer months - so be sure to use sunscreen
and wear a fashionable hat to shade you.
Fly often, fly safe

Big Panda Crash Lands
Most of us have seen the large yellow Russian Antanov AN-2 biplane at airshows. Known as the Big Panda, the
airplane crash landed in Highland after experiencing engine failure. The crew of two were unhurt. It is not known
if the plane can be repaired.
Speaker at Meeting
Richard Mallard of rhte Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team will speak at our May meeting. He attended our
April club meeting. He is interested in model aviation and has attended before but has been living out of the
area. He will speak about the activities of the search and rescue team, a world class volunteer rescue organization.
EAA 96 Fly In and Model Expo Set for October 1; Free Admission
This event is aimed at engaging the young and young at heart in a day of flying no other area airport can offer.
Five hours of radio control (R/C) aircraft flying from beginner to giant scale and multi-copters will fill the skies in
non-stop action. Attendees will have an opportunity to fly one through a supervised training system. Youngsters 10
and under can build gliders and compete for “longest flight”.
R/C vendors will be present offering their products and services to assist interested attendees on how to get into
the sport. Aircraft owners and pilots will be available to share how they got into aviation.
This is a family event and inexpensive in lean economic times. For the first time, admission will be free to all.
Katie Martin Tribute T-Shirts
We received the following from Bob Martin in Lake Havasu. He and Katie were members and officers of the
club (Katie was president), and they were responsible for obtaining rights to our field.
I thought you might want to know that this year we are producing Memorial Katie Martin International Tribute tshirts. They are high quality cotton shirts that we are offering in white or ash color and a choice of long sleeve or
short sleeve. They have the logo on the back and a small version on the left chest.
Attached is a rendering of the shirt.
A short sleeve is $20.00 and a long sleeve is$21.00. All proceeds go to Katie's favorite charity, The American
Heart Association in her name.

International Tribute, paste this into your browser.
