edited!volumes,!and!she!has!also!edited!a!volume!with!her!colleague!Paula!Winke.!Her!teaching!
experience!has!varied!from!language!courses,!to!cultural!studies!courses,!to!pedagogy!courses,!
to!SLA!theory!courses.!Some!of!the!courses!she!teaches!often!are!secondUyear!German,!
Advanced!German,!Technology!and!Language!Teaching!and!Learning,!Theory!and!Practice!of!
Teaching!Culture,!and!Program!Administration.!In!addition!to!teaching!and!research,!she!also!
stays!active!on!her!local!campus!and!in!national!and!international!professional!organizations!
such!as!the!Computer!Assisted!Language!Instruction!Consortium!(CALICO),!where!she!served!in!
leadership!roles.!Currently,!she!is!the!SecondUYear!German!Coordinator!and!also!the!Faculty!
Coordinator!for!the!Academic!Year!in!Freiburg!Program.!
Originally!from!Freiburg,!Germany,!she!started!her!career!in!the!US!after!her!BAUequivalent!

Thereafter!she!worked!at!the!University!of!Arizona!as!Assistant!to!the!Director!of!Basic!
Languages!and!Graduate!Teaching!Associate!as!well!as!Adjunct!ESL!Instructor!at!Pima!
Community!College,!while!she!was!completing!her!Ph.D.!in!Second!Language!Acquisition!and!

From$the$Virtual$World$to$the$Real$World$and$Back:$Technology$and$Study$Abroad$
The!development!of!technology!has!changed!not!just!language!education!but!also!study!
abroad.!US!students!studying!abroad!are!often!able!to!minimally!engage!with!both!the!
language!and!the!culture.!These!choices!and!behaviors!can!negatively!impact!language!learning!
in!study!abroad!(cf.!Trentman,!2013).!But!technology!cannot!only!hinder!study!abroad,!but!can!
also!be!used!to!improve!success!during!and!after!study!abroad!(Goertler,!2015).!Technology!
also!offers!many!affordances!to!prepare!students!for!study!abroad,!to!maximize!language!and!
culture!learning!while!abroad,!and!to!reintegrate!students!returning!from!study!abroad.!Based!
on!Shively’s!(2010)!model!for!pragmatic!learning,!we!have!made!changes!to!our!curriculum!
both!at!home!and!abroad!to!maximize!the!benefits!of!study!abroad!preU!(1),!during!(2),!and!
post!(3)!study!abroad.!!
(1)!By!integrating!technologyUenhanced!modules!about!our!study!abroad!destinations!into!our!
secondUyear!curriculum!prior!to!students!going!abroad,!we!have!increased!participation!in!
study!abroad!and!stakeholders!report!that!students!are!better!prepared!for!study!abroad.!(2)!
During!our!yearlong!study!abroad!program,!students!completed!analysis!tasks!and!reflective!
blogs!to!increase!noticing!of!language!and!culture!gaps.!While!students!did!notice!stereotypical!
morphosyntactical!and!intercultural!communicative!errors,!many!of!the!errors!leading!to!
greater!communicative!challenges!were!not!noticed.!!(3)!To!better!integrate!our!study!abroad!
returnees!into!the!curriculum,!we!revised!our!fourthUyear!language!course!to!include!a!virtual!
exchange!with!students!at!an!institution!located!in!one!of!our!study!abroad!destinations.!This!
post!study!abroad!virtual!exchange!allowed!students!to!continue!to!use!German!at!a!high!level!
and!stay!connected!to!GermanUspeaking!communities.!For!one!of!the!two!yearUlong!study!
abroad!program!returnees!this!exchange!had!a!significant!positive!impact!on!her!challenges!
with!reverse!culture!shock.!!

1950’s!at!the!University!of!ParisUSorbonne,!Professor!
Kramsch!emigrated!to!the!United!States,!where!she!
taught!German!language!and!literature!at!M.I.T.!and!
Applied!Linguistics!at!Cornell!University.!A!professor!at!
UC!Berkeley!since!1990,!she!is!now!retired!from!the!
German!Department!and!holds!an!appointment!as!Professor!of!the!Graduate!School.$Her!area!

This!presentation!will!recapitulate!the!theoretical!and!methodological!tenets!of!the!notion!of!
symbolic!competence,!coined!by!Kramsch!&!Whiteside!in!2008.!It!will!use!an!annotated!
bibliography!to!pass!in!review!how!the!notion!has!been!used!by!various!researchers!and!
