American artist Norman Rockwell was born on February 3,
1894. He is known for his witty and heartwarming covers

scenes of Americana. His early covers made Rockwell a star,

greeting cards for the next half-century. Rockwell was a

superb technician who liked to tell optimistic stories in his
paintings; critics called his work sentimental or corny, but

Rockwell said simply, “I paint life as I would like it to be.”
His fame reached a peak in World War II when his “Four
Birthdays
Freedoms” paintings became so iconic that they were sent
around the country to sell war bonds. Norman was married Welcome New Residents
three times and had three sons. He moved to Stockbridge,
Massachusetts, in 1953 and lived there the rest of his life, Welcome New Employees
using townsfolk as models for his paintings. His last
Saturday Evening Post cover appeared in 1963, and for the

next decade he worked extensively for Look magazine,
Council
covering more serious topics like civil rights and NASA
moon landings. His autobiography, My Adventures as an

the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1977. He died in 1978.
Rockwell was once quoted saying: “Some people have been
kind enough to call me a fine artist. I’ve always called
myself an illustrator. I’m not sure what the difference is. All
I know is that whatever type of work I do- I try to give it my
very best. Art has been my life.”

Here’s To Your Good Health!
Take Weight Off Slowly
The most effective weight loss is gradual, say experts - no more than one or two
pounds a week. Why? The slow rate allows you to eat enough healthy food for
nourishment and satisfaction, says nutritionist Joan Salge Blake. In addition,
spreading weight loss over a longer period helps create healthy eating habits
that will enable you to keep the weight off over time. When it comes to dieting, slow and steady wins the race.
Have You Heard?
St. Bernards get their name from the Holy Saint Bernard of Montjou, the patron saint of the
Alps, who founded a monastery between Italy and Switzerland. An alpine route, known as
the Great St. Bernards Pass, was particularly treacherous because of the high incidence of
snowstorms and avalanches. Monks frequently patrolled the area to rescue stranded
travelers. Their dogs, cross-bred from Mastiffs, Great Danes, and Newfoundlands, were
helpful because their broad chests cleared snow and their sense of direction was useful in
heavy fog and snowstorms. It has been reported that the dogs have rescued 2,000 people
over 200 years. There’s no solid evidence to show that the dogs carried cognac to revive
lost travelers, though historians cite a letter written by a Swiss citizen in 1816, which stated,
“Often the dogs carry a little barrel around their necks with alcoholic beverages.” The
birthstone for February is the Amethyst and symbolizes stability, peace, and sincerity. The
flower is the Violet.

BREAKING SILENCE
by Linda Castillo
Without looking closely, I picked this novel and when I looked at it at home, I found another Amish
novel. This time about murder in the Amish community, investigated by a female police chief who grew up
Amish. Complicating matters are a series of hate crimes aimed at the Amish community. Chief Kate finally is
able to separate the two and learn who was responsible for the murders and who for the hate crimes. The story
is well under way before the two crimes are separated. The author did a good job of keeping me interested in
the story.
This is not the first novel of a series following Chief Kate. It does a very good job filling in holes for
those who have not read the preceding stories. I have read others that almost MUST be read in order or a
reader wonders about what the author is talking about, or at least I do.
McNALLY’S FOLLY
by Vincent Lardo
Another Archie McNally novel? YES! I really enjoy reading about him. My only problem is Laurance
Sanders only wrote seven of them, this one making eight about him. I am not sure I have read all of the Archie
novels, but I have really enjoyed those I have read.
This story starts with a client of the McNally Law firm hiring Archie to investigate a new psychic in the
Palm Beach community. Complicating things is the fact that the wife of the client is a former movie star. As
usual, Archie starts his investigation and the psychic tells Archie many things that are not common knowledge!
Before he can make much progress in the investigation, Archie is roped in to direct a production of
Arsenic and Old Lace featuring the client’s wife as the star. Complications compound as the client stops the
investigation, but Archie and his father agree to continue at the law firm’s expense. Then, at a party introducing the cast of the play to the public, the former client dies of arsenic poisoning. This, plus a piece of info
delivered to Archie’s desk by the second victim of the arsenic, gives Archie the necessary key to solve the
murders and the psychic.
I really enjoy Archie McNally!
HIS MYSTERIOUS WAYS
a Guideposts Book
This volume was copyrighted in 1988. Thus the stories are decades old but somehow they seemed to
me to be as current as Donald Trump. Over a hundred stories of how God has touched a human life, grouped in
7 categories such as God Provides, God Heals, etc. stories of people in trouble or with a problem and help
arrives at the right time. Sometimes the help is from an unknown person who disappears, a gift appears, or
something causes a person to be in an unusual place at the ‘right’ time.
One such is of a boating couple who had to wait for a draw bridge and checked out a light. The light
was on a buoy, but around it were the members of a rowing crew whose shell had sunk. The men were saved.
Coincidence? I believe not!
Another is the story of a young woman in Los Angeles who walked outside the bus terminal while
waiting several hours for a bus. She was followed and frightened by three men. Then she saw a fourth man
coming toward her from the other direction. He escorted her back to the terminal and as she entered, she
thanked him and as she turned her back, he said, “Good-bye Euphie.” How had he known her name? And
when she looked for him - - - - - he was gone!
I very firmly believe in God and his help when we need it. Just remember, the help is often only when
we ask that he responds. I really enjoy reading about people who receive his help.
