Gary Natural Gas Line Upgrade

MODERNIZATION PROJECT
In 2015, NIPSCO will begin a three-year project
to upgrade and replace nearly 60 miles of
underground, bare steel natural gas lines in the
northwest section of Gary. New lines will be installed
to provide safer and more reliable service to area
residents and businesses in the future.
Phase 1
• Replacement of existing bare steel natural gas lines and installing
approximately 10 miles of new lines.
• The work will take place along roadway, near sidewalks and in alleys.
• Phase 1 work to take place within the boundaries of Grant Street
(West), Broadway Avenue (East), 5th Avenue (North) and 9th
Avenue (South).
• Construction of Phase 1 expected to begin mid May, early June 2015.
• Completion of Phase 1 expected in December 2015.
• Potential lane closures on some roadways (signage to be posted).
• Site restoration work will follow each phase.
Phases 2 & 3
• Remaining installation for an additional 50 miles (approximately) will
occur in 2016 and 2017 (see map).
• Phases 2 & 3 work to take place within the boundaries of Clark Road
(West), I-65 (East), I-90 (North) and I-80/94 (South).
• Additional details and notification to be provided.
Additional Details
• Local union workforce to assist with efforts.
• All NIPSCO-authorized contractors will carry and wear proper
identification.
• Work within identified areas will include the installation of new
natural gas lines including main and service lines leading to each
property.
• Throughout the course of the project, NIPSCO will identify and retire
service lines to uninhabited properties.
• Limited service interruptions may occur—property owners will be
notified in advance.
