Main Purpose
The purpose of this post is to reveal the impact of the Great War on the landscape of the AONB, harness
the expertise of regional universities, train heritage volunteers and create new opportunities to
commemorate and learn about WW1. This will be achieved by working in partnership with Friends of
Nidderdale AONB, the University Partnership (Bradford and York) with advice from the WW1 steering
group.

Main Accountabilities
The postholder will be responsible for:
a) Delivering objectives of WW1 project in line with HLF timetable
b) Developing the capacity of volunteers working on the WW1 project by working in partnership
with the University Partnership to deliver research and training opportunities.
c) Encouraging access to WW1 sites and information through improved intellectual and
physical access.
d) Ensure the long term protection of the built and cultural heritage associated with WW1
e) Create a legacy for the WW1 project that will ensure sustainability

Job activities

Develop new research groups and support existing groups to increase the capacity and skills of
volunteers
 Create and support a new WW1 research group
 Identify heritage volunteer training needs
 Devise and implement a volunteer training programme in co-ordination with FNAONB
 Engage new groups including military personnel

Uncover new information about the effect of war on the landscape
 Organise and deliver AONB based memories days
 Work in partnership with Leeds City Council to organise Leeds based events
 Work with the University partnership to collate and archive material

Ensure the protection of the built and cultural heritage associated with WW1
 Develop and manage contract for geophysical survey and archaeological digs
 Organise heritage events as part of the AONB’s summer visitor programme
 Develop management plans working in partnership with landowners and

Develop outreach and interpretation programme
 Develop and distribute school resources
 Devise and implement programme of school workshops and educational activities
 Develop and produce WW1 interpretation
 Devise and implement WW1 events programme

Create a lasting legacy to commemorate WW1
