13 November 2016 Year C

‘Your endurance will
win you your lives!’
THE events of this week have been tests of our
endurance: the US election and its surprise result,
and the Christmas Pageant which, for children, is an
adventure in itself, for others some inconvenience. Of
course this is not the endurance Jesus is talking about
in the Gospel this weekend. His message is more about
the hope his presence brings to our lives.
We encounter Jesus in everyday events, where fears
and worries call us to trust in him.
The smiles and wonder appear on the faces of our
children, as they are taken up in the pageant, God’s
shortcut into our hearts. The election result’s change in
direction requires patience and endurance. The touch
that Jesus adds to our thoughts assures us that respect
and care for others will have its rewards.
As this year draws to a close there can be much to
worry about – vision of wars, the reality of violence
from unlikely places, floods and bushfires, the threat of
personal tragedy and loss … These and other worries
play on people’s minds and cause more upset and
suffering of mind and heart. We can stop and reflect
on the abiding presence of God at these times. Jesus
shared the consequences of the ill will of others and
the tragedies of the human condition. The mystery of
Christmas is about to remind us of this.
As a person of faith Jesus trusted others. This was
supported by his practice of reflecting on the deeper
meaning of life itself and on the presence of His Father.
Our endurance in times of worry is not expressed by
a stoic grimace when the assurance of Jesus’ abiding
presence brings us hope and life itself.

Advent Scripture Program
THE Parish Scripture Study Program, in its final module for
the year, will be presenting a 4 week module for Advent. The
sessions are 7.30 - 9.30 pm on Mondays (November 21, 28,
December 5, 12) in the Cathedral Hall. The module looks at the opening chapters of the Gospels
of Matthew and Luke that describe the wondrous events
surrounding the birth of the Messiah. It explores the many
significant connections these two gospels make between
the Old Testament and the birth of the Saviour. Rich insights
will be discovered as these two gospels are opened to reveal
the special contribution each makes to our understanding
of Jesus' nativity. Join us to deepen your experience of the
coming of Jesus this Christmas.
We invite you to make any donation that is possible to support
this Adult Faith Formation program. To help you discern your
contribution, we offer you two levels of payment to consider;
full cost $25, subsidised cost $15. Bookings are essential
