PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGION
President’s Message
I hope everyone enjoys reading the April issue of our
newsletter and it begins to stir some of your desires to
drive a sports car again. With spring and next year’s
driving season just around the corner, it’s time to get
the cars ready for their first outing of 2007. Hopefully
everyone has had a chance to visit their favorite car
in the garage this winter and have
given them a good warm up,
fluid and tire pressure check. You
wouldn’t want your favorite car to
forget who you were on your first
drive together this spring.
There are many events coming
up this driving season, so be
prepared to take your car out and
enjoy some of them with the club.
I will quickly comment on some
of the important ones. (1) April
kicks spring off with our quarterly
Sidewinder’s Pizza get together.
(2) Track days begin at Miller
Motorsports Park in April and
will run into November. Some of the track days are
sponsored by our sister region (The Intermountain
Region) in Salt Lake City and many will be put on
courtesy of Ken Garff Porsche (run by Lapping Days).
All of these will be excellent driving events to attend,
whether you are a novice, an experienced racer or a
spectator. Don’t be afraid to give them a try; you won’t
be disappointed. (3) This year’s American Le Mans
Series race will be held in May. The temperatures
should be a lot more pleasant than last year’s
rendition of a Sahara Desert sandstorm. There will
also be a Porsche Platz (tent with tables and TV; lunch
and refreshments; a few slow speed laps on the track
if you bring your Porsche; and special parking for
your Porsches) at the race. (4) In June, our club will
be having its Annual Rendezvous Dinner at Teton
Pines and we hope everyone can come out to enjoy
this enjoyable dinner and great raffle with your other
club members. (5) Lastly, our Fall tour to beautiful
Big Sky, Montana will take place in September. We
are trying to organize the event with our neighboring
Big Sky and Absaroka Regions. Hopefully we can
have a larger number of cars attending the tour and
meet some new friends as well. Be sure to review the
calendar in this issue and future newsletters for exact
dates and times for all of these activities. As always
our web site contains all this information and more
(http://yel/pca.org/).
All of these events will provide you with an
opportunity to have a lot of fun during our short but
beautiful driving season. The only thing we need is
you to participate. As a group, we can make this year’s
Big Sky Resort
events even more successful than last year. I hope
to see all of you at one or more of the club activities
this year.
Until we meet again—auf wiedersehen and safe
driving,
Ken

MEET THE MEMBERS
Captain Doug Henry
Jim and Nancy Stockhouse – Jackson, WY
Doug started legally driving sports cars at age 14 in
Ormond Beach, Florida, just north of Daytona, in a MGB.
An Austin Healy bug eyed Sprite, MG Midget, and Datsun
240Z followed until marriage and raising a family sent him
down the more practical sedan and SUV path for 20 plus
years. His Son recently graduated from San Diego State
University, and this divorced 56 year-old rekindled his early
driving experiences by turning residual college funds into a
1986 911 Carrera Targa in Guards Red.
I bought my first Porsche when I was 19 years old in 1975.
It was a 1972 red and black 914 with 25,000 miles. I was
in college at the University of Wyoming and thought I was
pretty hot. I did manage to pay my own way through seven
years of college while driving a Porsche. It did not have
much power but boy did it corner nice. I drove that 914 for
five years and sold it for $700 more than I paid for it. That
was pretty hot. I’ve never been able to do that again.
Doug graduated from the Naval Academy in Annapolis in
1973, and embarked on a 30 year career as an aviator, engineer
and test pilot flying airplanes like the F/A-18 Hornet from
aircraft carriers in the Pacific Fleet. He retired to his parent’s
home in Star Valley to care for his aged Father, who’s still
telling him what to do at age 93, and began building his
dream cabin on five acres near Smoot, which is about 85
miles south of Jackson.
He volunteers as a Director in the Lincoln County Sheriff’s
Star Valley Search and Rescue Unit, and Mission Pilot
with the USAF Auxiliary/Civil Air Patrol flying out of the
Jackson Airport. Between training and actual rescues or
searches, Doug can be found flying a Cessna 182 around
Wyoming, riding in a grossly overpowered jet boat on the
Snake River, climbing the mountains in the Wyoming and
Salt River Ranges via snowmobile, ATV, dirt bike or Mule,
and leading his search dog (in training) Dory as she learns
to find the lost children and ignore the Coyotes.
Hobbies include flying, white water rafting, fly fishing,
backpacking, hunting, snowmobiling, wine tasting and
skiing. He currently lives on a golf course at Star Valley
Ranch, but would rather watch water boil than play a
round of golf. Any Yellowstone Region member interested
in fishing the waters south of Jackson Hole, or pursuing a
“Cutt Slam” certificate from Game and Fish, are welcome to
pull him aside at a future meeting, and show off your home
waters in exchange. Once the dust settles on his building
project, Doug plans to upgrade to a Carrera 4 so he can
share the road with the snowplows.
I sold the 914 just before graduating for two reasons: I had
trouble finding people to work on it in small town Wyoming
and I needed the money to set up at dental practice. But I
always wanted another sports car, so after five years I was
ready to get another one. I knew I wanted more power and
I thought I should get something that I could get serviced
in small Wyoming town. So I bought a new 1985 Corvette…
plenty of power, but rough. Rough riding and rough shifting
(I bought an automatic because my wife, Nancy, likes autos
as well.) The Vette was absolutely worthless in winter. Just
touch the accelerator in snow and the back end would go
sideways.
I moved to Jackson from Riverton in 1990 which made for
more winter and less driving of the Vette. It now has 29,000
miles. I wanted my next sports car to be more refined, one
that I could drive year round and had power (and heated
seats), so I bought my current Porsche, a 1999 C4 Coupe in
February (winter) 2001 with 8200 miles. Heated Seats! Not
as much power as the Vette (only 298 hp) but so much nicer
to drive and to get in and out of. I got the stick shift (sorry
Nancy) and it is just a delight. But never to be content, after
driving it through the first winter on the rough Jackson
roads (I’ve decided that’s not nice to my Porsche), so I only
drive it on good roads in the winter now. The heated seats
are still a must…that maybe all wheel drive isn’t a must and
I would like a little more umph. Enter thoughts of buying a
Cayman with less weight and the same horsepower. I need
to test drive one first though but Ken hasn’t offered yet.

Meet the Members Jim and Nancy Stockhouse continued.
News Flash: Roving spy photographer captures irrefutable
evidence of Jim in the driver’s seat of Ken’s Cayman. Jim test
drove the Cayman (all-be-it for only 60 seconds) and then
parked the car for the group picture in Sun Valley. A close
look at this photo shows Ken in the background, anxiously
guiding the car into the space, and the culprit, eerr, I mean
Jim, driving the car. When confronted with this evidence, all
Jim could say was “Explain the actual meaning of the word
drive and besides, that’s my story and I’m sssstticken to it”.

A Ferry Tale-Porsche at Le Mans
Once upon a time, in a land far-far away, a tiny
German Auto Manufacturer (actually Austrian at the
time, since they were still building their cars at the
foot of the Austrian Alps in Gmund) was asked to
participate in the world’s most prestigious endurance
auto race; The 24-Heures Du Mans. It had only been
six years since WW II had ended and Ferry Porsche
wasn’t sure how the French people would accept a
German car manufacturer and team at their race.
The Le Mans Organizing Committee assured him
that everything would be just fine. As it turned out,
they were right. The French people adopted the little
German team and Porsche’s relationship with Le
Mans had begun. Their first entry was a diminutive
356 aluminum bodied coupe having 1.1 liters, only
44 HP and a top speed of 95 MPH. Entered in one of
the lowest HP classes, Porsche’s only goals were of
finishing the race and possibly taking a class victory.
When the race ended, they had accomplished both of
their goals. With Porsche’s very first entry, a fire would
be lit, and although no one knew it at the time, Le
Mans itself would forever be changed.
the series has been in existence. To this day, Ferrari
is the back-bone of F1 and is held in the highest
esteem by Formula 1 because of their longevity and
commitment to that series. In contrast, Porsche has
become as important if not more important to Le Mans
than Ferrari is to F1. Ever since its first entry in 1951,
Porsche has had at least one car entered in every Le
Mans 24 HR race. Porsche has compiled more overall
victories (16) in its 55 years of competition at Le Mans
than the next three manufacturers combined. Their
class victories (totaling 75), would out pace the next
ten automotive competitors combined. Porsche has
had more than 740 individual cars that have competed
at The Circuit de la Sarthe, which averages almost
14 cars per race. Lastly, there have been years, had it
not been for the Porsche entries, the LeMans 24 HR
race would not have even taken place. However, the
relationship between Porsche and Le Mans has not
been all that rosy. In fact, it is more of a love-hate
relationship. It seems that the Le Mans organizers love
to have Porsche cars attend the races, but they hate to
have Porsche win so often.
Even after building many different models of cars
for competition at Le Mans (most notably the 550, RSK,
RS60, 904, 906, 907, 908 and 910), it still took Porsche
nineteen years to achieve their first overall victory
(most of the aforementioned cars were never intended
to challenge for the overall). In 1970, the mighty 917
finally gave Porsche their long awaited win, with
the 917 going on to dominate Le Mans the following
year as well. With its 630 HP and speed of over 240
MPH on the Mulsanne Straight (locally known as the
Ligne Droite des Hunaudieres), the 917 had come a
long way since Porsche’s first 356 entry just 19 years
earlier. Today, fans regard the 917 as a legend; an icon
for a whole generation of powerful racing cars. It was
because of its incredible performance and the lack of

other cars being able to successfully compete against
it, that the ACO quickly mandated engine changes
that would eliminate the 917 from competition in 1972.
Even though the 917 would not race again, there were
still many Porsches that would go on to compete very
successfully in the 24 HR classic (914, 924, 934, 935,
936, 944, 956, 961, 962, GT1’s and the many derivatives
of the 911).
The regulations changed again in 1982 when the ACO
introduced the new Group C closed cockpit cars for
competition. Porsche gladly took up the challenge and
developed the beautiful 956. In 1983 Porsche finished
in nine out of the top ten places at the Le Mans 24 HR
race. This prompted Porsche to put out one of its now
famous racing posters. With the winning Porsche’s
picture shown on the poster and listing each of the top
10 finishers (only one not being a Porsche), Porsche
made an additional statement by adding the caption
“Nobody is Perfect”. Although quite appropriate
for the occasion, the ACO was not impressed. Once
again the ACO felt they had to do something to stop
the Porsche juggernaut. They would change the rules
to prevent the 956 from competing past the 1985
Regulations changed once again in 1976 to allow
the new 934’s to compete in Group 4 and the TurboCharged 935’s to compete in the Group 5 classes. The
935’s turned out to be fast enough to challenge for the
overall win, even though they were not intended to do
so by the ACO/FIA. With the new changes to the rules,
the ACO never imagined that the 935 in the Group 5
silhouette class (based on production cars) would ever
have a chance to win Le Mans competing against the
exotic prototypes. But in 1979, the 935 achieved a first
at Le Mans; an overall win for a production based car!
Porsche at this same time also reentered the newly
formed Group 6 prototype class with their 936 open
cockpit car. They developed the 936 in total secrecy
and surprised everyone when it was entered at Le
Mans. The 936 immediately became the car to beat,
winning in the 1976, 1977 & 1981 seasons. During 1976
& 1977, Porsche had their most rewarding victories in
the company’s history with wins in Groups 4, 5 and 6
plus the overall victory at Le Mans.
season. They now required the manufacturers to have
the driver’s feet positioned behind the front axle for
safety purposes, feeling this would once and for all
put a halt to Porsche’s dominance. In 1986 Porsche
simply redesigned the 956 and morphed it into the
962. This caught the Le Mans Organizers totally by
surprise. They never thought that Porsche would be
able to develop a new car quickly enough to compete
in the 1986 season. With its now stretched wheel base
and the first sports car to be equipped with ground
effects, the 962 became even more potent than the 956

it replaced. There wasn’t a sports car on the planet that
could compete with it and they continued to dominate
Le Mans and every sports car race the world over.
In 1986, Porsche finished once again with nine out
of the top ten places at Le Mans. Over a span of 14
years, the 956 and its 962 stable mate have established
themselves as the most successful racing models in
the history of international sports car racing. Porsche
not only continued winning at Le Mans, but at every
racing circuit they were competing. It was during this
time that the French coined a now famous phrase,
“Surviving the 24 hours of Le Mans takes a very good
car; winning on the other hand, takes a Porsche.”
While participating in the prototype class, Porsche
also built, sold and raced a veritable plethora of 911
derivatives represented by the RSR, Turbo, 961, GT1,
GT2 and current GT3 models. They have continued
to totally dominate their classes ever since the 911
was first developed and raced in 1963. Porsche also
raced with great success the 914, 924 and 944 models
as well. In 1996, Porsche decided they wanted to take
a new approach and build a prototype race car that
more closely resembled their street cars. They felt this
would help their marketing department sell more
production 911’s. Porsche set off to develop their GT1.
The new GT1 used the basic engine block shared with
the Turbo and GT2 and it also had the same stock
front section (using the steel monocoque body shell
straight off the production line and then truncating
it behind the driver’s seat) from the 993-911 Turbo as
well. This foundation allowed the car to compete in
the recently formed GT1 class. Even though the GT1
was a mid-engine car, it still was recognizable as a 911
and became the foundation for a limited production
street car. It not only went on to win its class at Le
Mans, but in 1996 every single class in the race was
won by a Porsche. No other manufacturer has been
able to establish such domination in all classes during
a single race. Porsche realized, however, to compete
against the top Mercedes, BMW, Ferrari, Peugeot,
Nissan, Mazda and the Toyota teams; they needed a
truly dedicated sports prototype. The GT1 then evolved
into the all carbon fiber GT1 EVO for 1998. The 1998
race season also represented the 50 year anniversary
for Porsche building automobiles. Therefore, winning
Le Mans would become the top priority for the racing
season. Second place would not be good enough for
this important anniversary year; unless of course, the
first place car was also a Porsche. The Porsche Werks
(Factory) team delivered just that, a one-two overall
win against the other formidable competitors at Le
Mans and a perfect way to celebrate its first 50 years.
Speculation for the future has it that the RS Spyder
will race at Le Mans in 2007. Although competing in
the LMP2 category (not the fastest class), the Spyder
still has a great chance for another class and who
knows, possibly an overall victory. Based on Porsche’s
history at Le Mans, the competition should be keeping
one eye focused on their rear-view mirror this coming
June!
Since its first race in 1951, Porsche is the only sports
car manufacturer that has consistently supplied
competitive racing cars for private teams to purchase
and race. Porsche is now the most successful auto
manufacturer in international motorsports and they
build more racing cars than any other brand as the
world’s smallest independent volume producer.
Generally, if there was a class that a Porsche competed
in, the chances were pretty good that they would finish
in the winners circle. The very same goes for today’s
cars. In at least two of the years that Porsche competed
in all of the available classes, they went on to win five
out of those five classes (a feat unmatched by any other
manufacturer). Also over a consecutive 24 year

period of time at Le Mans, Porsche has won the overall
16 times. Porsche is the only car manufacturer that will
build and sell its race cars to a private team and then
have them compete not only against other privately
owned Porsches but against the Porsche Factory team
as well. Winning the overall at Le Mans is generally
dominated by the large, well funded Factory teams; with
one exception--Porsche. There have been numerous
private teams who have won the overall in a Porsche
and because of this no other manufacturer can claim so
many non-Werks Team victories. This is due primarily
to the reliability, toughness and competitiveness of the
race cars that they build. Porsche takes the phrase “to
finish first, first you must finish” very seriously. They
produce cars that are tough enough to withstand the
rigors of endurance racing. This not only applies to
their race cars but also to their production cars, since
911 race cars are born on the very same assembly line
as their street cars cousins. The quality, reliability and
performance that is built into every Porsche sets them
apart from every other sports car manufacturer.
January Meeting at Sidewinders
Almost 40 people attended our club’s January
meeting at Sidewinders in Jackson. The weather was
mostly clear and cold but the warmest of feelings
were exchanged by the members who attended.
Pizza, refreshments and good friends made for a
most enjoyable evening. Eight new members were
introduced to the club and four of them were present
for the festivities. The topics that were discussed
appear in the “News and Announcements” section of
this newsletter.
Our next meeting will be April 25 at Sidewinders. Hope
to see you there.
So why is Porsche so committed to racing at Le Mans?
Simply because they enjoy it so much! Being the most
prestigious sports car race in the world, Le Mans and
Porsche will remain inexorably linked. Porsche needs
a world class showcase for their cars to perform and
excel in. Le Mans on the other hand, wants Porsche
race cars to help fill their field and they also need the
throngs of Porsche fans to fill the stands. They may not
love each other, but even after all these years, they still
need each other.

2007’s
12 Hours of Sebring
For sports car racing fans, “The 12 Hours” marks
the start of a new season of ALMS racing. Over the
five days of racing, more than 60 Porsches competed
in four different race series which included the
ALMS, GT3 Cup, Speed GT World Challenge as
well as the Historic races. The weather was in the
70’s all week until Friday afternoon, just before the
start of GT3 Cup race. That was when the weather
let loose with a torrential deluge. Flooding occurred
not only on the race track but in the surrounding
area. This caused many of the races that followed to
be either canceled or postponed. I happened to be
in the Porscheplatz tent listening to various people
like Bobby Rahal talk about the upcoming 12 hour
race and their cars. I figured I was pretty safe until
the water started to rise in the nearby parking area
and eventually reached a depth of some 5 inches
inside the tent (and about 18 inches in the parking
lot). All of the teams that were scheduled to speak
at the Porsche sponsored event, along with some
senior Porsche executives, still graciously attended
(brave, committed people). Everyone removed their
shoes, rolled up their pants and continued to enjoy
the soggy talks.
The weather for the main race day was picture
perfect. Unfortunately, the four Porsches in the LMP2
class developed minor problems from the start. They
ranged from blown tires, to a faulty alternator, some
minor accidents and even broken steel brake lines.
This put them behind right from the start and the
best they could do at the finish was place 3rd in class
(a Penske RS Spyder). The GT2 class had excellent
competition with six Ferrari’s in the class along with
a Spyker and some Panoz GT’s. The competition
was fierce. On the last corner of the last lap, Jorg
Bergmeister in the Flying Lizard Porsche managed
to pass the Ferrari for 1st place. Unfortunately the
Ferrari made contact with the Porsche (several
times), causing him to loose momentum. The Ferrari
then re-passed the Porsche just a few feet before
the finish line. So at the end of the day, Porsche’s
finished in 2nd through 6th place.
It still turned out to be an excellent race.
Unfortunately for us Porsche race fans, the results
were not what we were hoping for. Oh well, there is
always next year!

Ready to Drive
By Bernard Juchli, General Manager and Master Mechanic, Jay
Leno’s “Big Dog Garage”
Here are a few simple tips to help keep your car running
strong, even if it doesn’t run often.
Whether it’s a 1970s muscle car or a vintage Thunderbird,
I’ve noticed more and more people adding a classic car to
their everyday collection. In fact, classic car collecting is
now a $17.8 billion-a-year business and is expected to keep
growing. And while these cars are fun to drive and can be
enjoyed for years to come, keeping a car in mint condition,
when it’s not driven regu larly, takes special care. After all,
cars are made to be driven, and when they’re not, problems
can start popping up left and right.
Take it for a weekly spin.
Bringing out the true beauty in an older vehicle often takes
time and patience – restoration doesn’t happen overnight.
But once you’ve got your classic in working condition, it’s
important you take the necessary steps to keep it there. As
the manager of Jay Leno’s “Big Dog Garage,” I have the
pleasure of working with classic cars every day. A large
portion of Jay’s 96 cars and 84 motorcycles are classic or
vintage models and require careful maintenance. And
while these are truly extraordinary machines, the general
principles that are used to maintain this collection can apply
to anyone looking to keep their classic car in tip top shape.
A car should be exercised at least once a month (preferably
once a week) for 30 minutes to help dry out moisture and
keep the grease “greasy.” Five or 10 minutes in idle won’t
do the trick and may even make things worse. Come on,
you bought that car for a reason! Get it out of the garage
and out on the road.
Use a TOP TIER fuel.
Many older cars have trouble with carbon deposit build-up
on their valves resulting from years of using a gasoline with
minimal cleaning agents. To avoid carbon deposit buildup in an older car, you should use a gasoline that meets
the TOP TIER Detergent Gasoline standard. For instance,
Shell V-Power premium gasoline contains five times the
amount of cleaning agents required by federal government
standards, and can help remove carbon deposits and clean
your engine while you drive.
In addition, it’s important to keep the gas tank full. A halffull gas tank that sits for a while can experience condensation
Old Faithful Porsche
21
PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA - YELLOWSTONE REGION
and cause rust and water to enter the fuel. This condensation
can lead to a plugged-up fuel filter and a car that won’t run
properly. Keeping the tank full eliminates this problem.
Handle hibernation.
When a car has been in storage for a long time, it’s important
to replace all of the fluids and fuel filters. Even if a car sits all
year long, the brake fluid needs to be changed once a year
or it’ll absorb water and cause corrosion the next time you
drive it. And because acids can get into the oil and cause
internal damage, owners should also consider changing a
vehicle’s oil directly before storage (even if the car was only
driven 20 miles since its last oil change).
Don’t tire your tires.
It may seem simple, but tires are an often-overlooked area
of classic car maintenance. It’s important to keep a watchful
eye on your tires because a worn tread is not the only sign
of expired tires. We have tires in our garage that need to
be replaced because they’ve grown old and gone flat, not
because the tread’s worn out. Pay attention for overall wear
and tear.
2007 ANNUAL FUND RAISING
EVENT – RAFFLE/JUNE
We have many great raffle prizes which have been
generously donated from many different companies
that support our club’s efforts to grow. Our June
dinner is our most important event of the year to
help raise operating funds for our club. These funds
support our newsletter, club get-togethers and other
events planned throughout the year. Please help
support the club by (1) buy as many raffle tickets as
possible (you do not have to be present to win these
great prizes) or (2) if you have any items you wish
to donate for the raffle (i.e., wine, dinner certificates,
etc.), please let us know.
Now I’m not going to make this sound easy; keeping a classic
in top condition takes attention, time, and a decent amount
of elbow grease. But by taking a preventative approach to
your car’s health and following a few simple maintenance
tips, anyone can keep their vintage car model a usable
masterpiece – whether you’re as famous as Jay Leno or an
everyday Joe.

Edie Walker Leaving Our Region
It’s on a sad note that I have to announce that Edie will
be leaving our region for Arizona. She held this region
together for many years and kept it alive. If it were not
for her, we would have been split up as a region and
would have become members of the Boise or Montana
regions. We all owe her a great amount of gratitude for her
dedication and hard work. She was the Board of Directors,
since she held all of the officer positions in this region for
many years all by herself. At that time, there were not too
many people to thank her either. So let’s thank her now.
Thank you Edie and enjoy Arizona. Just know; we will not
forget you.
New Car Pictures
We are hoping you can help us with a new idea for our
newsletter. We would like for all members to send pictures
of the Porsche cars in their household, to the newsletter
editor (Ken at [email protected]). We would like to add
these pictures to the newsletter and web site to help
identify the owner and the cars that we see on the road.
Also, if you purchase a car in the future, please send those
pictures to us as well so we can publish them. It doesn’t
have to be pretty or new-just a Porsche. To show everyone
we are an equal opportunity newsletter; our first car
picture is a Ferrari 599 Fiorano owned by a member in the
Jackson area-Alberto. I know it doesn’t compare to our
Porsches and it is only a Ferrari, but it got your attention.
So now I know you read this article and you have no
excuse not to send in your pictures.
Family is why
WE DO IT ALL.
New Board Members
Bodean Barney will become our new VP with the
departure of Edie. Also, Tara Holzinger will be taking on
the responsibility of becoming our clubs Secretary. Please
thank both of these members for caring about the club
and taking on the additional responsibility of serving as
officers.
We all feel the same commitment to care
for our families. As your good neighbor
agent, I can help you meet your insurance
needs. Call me today.
