Humanutopia (represented by Steve and Chris) visited Haughton Academy on Tuesday 21 March 2017 and this was the ques:on they asked our Year 10 pupils -‐ “Do you need to change?” The response throughout the day was overwhelming. The Year 10s were a credit to our school. Steve said, ‘the pupils took a very honest and mature approach to all the challenges the team set them.’ The day took the Year 10s on a rollercoaster journey looking at the key topic of hope, confidence, happiness, rela:onships and employability. The team challenged the pupils to think about their past and whether they had ‘filled anyone else’s bin’ with nega:vity in the form of name-‐calling, isola:ng people etc. Pupils were very honest and courageous; they stood up and shared with the rest of the group how the name-‐calling made them feel. This was met with some pupils adminng to saying huroul things and apologising to those around them. The whole process was extremely emo:onal. The aYernoon session involved the pupils working with other pupils they would not normally interact with par:cipa:ng in team building skills. They also started to share their hopes and dreams with each other. GCSE Drama Date The GCSE Drama exam is on Friday 28 April 2017. Crea,ve Pupils at Whinfield Primary School Win Book Vouchers Pupils in our Year 8, set 1 English class so enjoyed their homework task of rewri:ng the final chapter of one of their favourite stories that they decided to launch a compe::on in our feeder primary schools. We took Year 8 pupils to their former primary schools to explain the compe::on to the Year 5 and Year 6 children and also to read out their alterna:ve endings. The following pupils went along to their former primary schools where they thoroughly enjoyed mee:ng up with their previous teachers: • Springfield: Jack Walker and Jacob Edgerton • Whinfield: Ka:e Gale, Emily Guy and Gemma Read • Redhall: Abbie Keneford • Gurney Pease: Grace Mansfield and Bethany Wanless We decided that we would aim the compe::on at the MAT (more able and talented) pupils and what able and talented Year 5 and 6 pupils they turned out to be! Year 8, set 1 English thoroughly enjoyed judging the gripping entries. Deciding on the winners was a difficult task as there was so much imagina:on and crea:vity to choose from, but the very deserved overall Darlington winner was Isabelle Raw from Whinfield Primary School. Isabelle won a £20 WH Smith voucher. You can enjoy her story on the page opposite. Other winners from Whinfield were: School Winner (£10 voucher for WH Smiths): Liam McAllister Runners Up (£5 voucher for WH Smiths): Eloise Knights, Zara Lowe, Ben Gray, Jake Armstrong & Freya Hollinshed. Springfield winners: School Winner (£10 voucher for WH Smiths): Freya Currie Runners Up (£5 voucher for WH Smiths): Emily Lomas, Lola Robinson, Anna Simpson, Brooke Leonard & Elise Ward. We’ll publish some of the other winning entries for you to enjoy in future newslebers. Heroes of Olympus: The Blood of Olympus by Isabelle Raw, Whinfield Primary School, Year 6 Leo was dead. He couldn’t see, hear or even smell anything. All he could do was feel pain. It felt as if he kept dying and dying, over and over again. Then somebody put jumper cables on his brain and restarted his life. At first all he could see was a blur of sky blue, then some white blobs faded in. He looked down and saw the golden scales of Festus. “Man, dying sucked. But that physician’s cure is way worse!” Leo groaned. Festus clicked in morse code. “I’m joking man I’m glad to be alive. And yeah I love you too.” Leo checked for damages. Strangely (even though he’d just been blown up) the only damage was to the end of his tail which didn’t really exist anymore. Leo couldn’t really remember what had happened. All he remembered was a blinding flash then BOOM he was dead. He just hoped that Jason and Piper had made it out alive and that the camp was okay. He hoped that Harley and all of his brothers and sisters were okay. He no:ced that the naviga:on system was all messed up. “Hey buddy guess what! Your naviga:on system’s broken! I have no idea where we are. Then Leo had a sudden urge to whoop, “OH YEAH! WHO DIED? WHO CAME BACK TO LIFE? LEO BADBOY SUPREME THAT’S WHO!” People probably heard him in China. Festus creaked. “Oh ha ha very funny.” Said Leo. Then he realised a small island with a long beach. On that beach was a very familar person. “Go down,” demanded Leo. Festus swooped down and landed on the beach right next to the very familiar girl. “You took your :me.” Exclaimed Calypso. “How long was I gone?” asked Leo. “I’m not sure,” she said nervously, “Time is different here on Ogigya.” “You look like you’re packed for a long trip,” said Leo. “I was expec:ng someone.” Calypso admibed. Leo’s face went green. “wh-‐who?” Leo stammered. “YOU, DUMMY.” Calypso cried. “o-‐o-‐oh.” Blushed Leo. “Where’d you wanna go?” he said, helping Calypso (and her bags) onto Festus. “Nowhere in par:cular.” Calypso giggled “Okay then. Festus, set course to nowhere in par:cular.” Leo demanded. Then the two of them (kissing of course) set off into the sunset to nowhere in par:cular.
