Snorter’s Report Swinburne University Hockey Volume 2007 Issue 6 6th June 2007 In this issue: • Behaviour both on and off the field • Return of the reverse stick! • Match reports. • Presidents report, dates to remember, player profile. Presidents Report Hi everyone Well, we are fast approaching the half way mark and there have already been plenty of memorable hockey moments. Which I am sure we will read all about them again in the year book at the end of the season, so check your eye out for that. It has been great to see many of you around especially on home days watching and supporting the other teams in the club. Which I am sure will continue through out the rest of the season. Thank you to those people who have been helping out with the running of the BBQ's on home days and those assisting with the umpiring. Just a quick reminder that fees are now OVERDUE. If you have not already paid your fees or have not made arrangements with Dan Eason to pay them, then it is important that you do so as soon as possible. As if you have not paid them in full by round 10, then you could find that you may not be selected to play until they are paid up or an arrangement with Dan is made. It is possible to pay money to your team managers on game day if you are unable to make training. So please pay your fees ASAP. On the Social front we have a few up and coming events to be aware of and put in your diary. The club is running their Annual Pub Crawl along Bridge Rd on Friday the 22nd of June. This event has been a great success in Welcome previous years, providing plenty of funny stories and many sore heads the next day. I encourage you all to attend and to bring along as many husbands, wives, partners, friends and siblings that you can find or pay to come along. We are planning to start at the Bridge Hotel, so if you are planning to eat dinner at the pub make sure you get there early as we plan to leave there at 8pm. Heading toward the city along Bridge Rd. There will be various challenges to be completed along the way. If you are planning on attending please either email Bridget N or the committee or simple add your name to the list at training. I look forward to seeing you there. Swinburne is this year co hosting the Uni Ball in conjunction with Monash Uni. This is a fantastic night out and an even better excuse especially for the girls to lose the hockey uniforms and put on a pretty frock, and for the guys to bring out the favourite suit for its yearly wear. The club is in the planning process at the moment but keep your eyes and ears open for more details soon. Good Luck with your games Donna Welcome to the slightly new look issue of SNORTER'S REPORT, the Swinburne University Hockey Newsletter, for 2006/7. Over the next few issues I will be playing with the layout to see about re-vamping the newsletter. Let me know if there’s anything that you like or hate by sending me an email at [email protected]. SNORTER'S REPORT will be as good as you want it to be - feel free to comment on what you want to see in it as well as contribute to it by providing match reports, pictures or even some good old fashioned gossip. Contributions can be sent to [email protected] or scribbled down on a scrap of paper handed over at matches. Apologies on the late issue. But as you can probably see it was a big issue this month! Behaviour both on and off the field In light of a few issues of late, the committee decided that it was important to emphasise the impact of your behaviour both on and off the field. As many of you are aware the way that you behave both on and off the field reflects on not only you but the club and your fellow team mates. How many times have you said “Oh, [insert club name here] they’re a pack of dirty players”. How did they get that reputation? By the way they conduct themselves on the field. Both in interacting with their team mates, umpires and opposition players. This is a reputation that we as a club do not want to obtain. So, what can you do to help stop Swinburne Hockey from obtaining a reputation like this? On the field Team mates: mates Treat your fellow players with respect. They have been selected for your team by the selection committee for a reason. You may not be privy to that reason. I know, at times, when you’re under the pump or losing badly it’s difficult to not blow your stack. But think of it from the other side. How would you feel if you were trying your hardest and someone went off at you? Now is the time to focus and take a few seconds to regroup your thoughts and channel them more effectively. If you have bench then sub yourself off the field and take a few moments to collect yourself. It is not appropriate to throw a tantrum and storm off the field and leave your team mates. They haven’t left you. They’re still out there giving their all and trying hard not only for themselves but for you and everyone else on that team. Opposition: Opposition Don’t give them the satisfaction of riling you up. If they push then hold your ground. Don’t push back. If you do then you’re no better than they are. Beat them will skills not rough housing. If someone is starting to get to you then talk to your fellow team mates and swap position for a bit until they’re not longer a factor. Again, if you have a bench then sub yourself off. Remove yourself from the situation before it comes to a head. Umpires: Umpires Let me guess, don’t get you started on the umpires. We have all had bad experiences with umpires. They don’t always get it right but they’re there to do a job. Umpiring is a difficult job. They can’t see everything or be everywhere. They do the best job they can. The first thing that you need to ask yourself when you’re about to go off at an umpire is “When was the last time that I umpired?”. If the answer is never or a long time ago then you have no right to argue with the umpire. Put your money where your mouth is and umpire a few games and you’ll get a better appreciation for the job they’re doing. If you have changed address over the past year can you please let either Terry (Vice-President) or Donna (President) know your new details so that we can keep in contact with you. Off the field Transfers At the end of the day we’re all there because we love the game and want to have some fun. So let’s do our best to make it fun for everyone that includes the opposition, supports, umpire and team mates. If you have come from another club or have ever played for another club you need to get a transfer! If you’re not 100% sure then let Donna or Terry know and they can chase it up and find out for you. Feel free to cheer for your team. Yell, scream and shout encouragement to your club mates. You are not there to jeer and yell at either the umpires or opposition. That’s not what we, as a club, want to build a reputation of doing. 2 Goal Scorers Tally OVERDUE Fees are now overdue and MUST be paid. Sandringham fought back with lots of drives up the middle but even with some patchy teamwork and communication Swinburne held them off. After half time Swinburne came back with renewed energy getting in some good passing combinations resulting in a stroke. Lauren narrowly missed out on her hat trick of 3 for 3 with the ball just slipping passed the wrong side of the goal post. The girls continued to build the play well culminating in a number of shorts. Jo R and Jayne combined beautifully to score the second goal putting the match out of Sandringham's reach. Women’s Metro 4 South Round 5 vs Mentone lifting in their skills and game tactics. Author: Lauren Keam Playing the top team with 3 players short, we knew we were in for a tough game. However, the teams were pretty even, with the game remaining scoreless for the majority of the first half. Considering the odds were against us, the girls played extremely well, with great defence and only just missing out on a few great opportunities at goal. Although we were defeated, a 0-2 loss is a great result against the top team, with no bench and 1 player short, indicating that as a group the Metro 4 ladies team are really 4 Match Reports (cont’d) Men’s Metro 2 East Round 7 vs Chadstone Author: Matt Eason Coming in to the game with our Captain Colin and our starting fullback Leigh missing, Swinburne would have to produce some top quality Hockey to get the points against a highly rated opposition. With Phil Watts starting at an unfamiliar LHB and a very surprised Matt E moving in to CHB we were playing an experimental line-up at best. Building on our blazing start from last week, Swinny once again jumped out of the blocks with Terry having 2 quality shots on goal in the opening minutes. Our strategy of hitting long into space for our 3 high forwards was paying off with Steve, Terry and Rowan playing like a well-oiled machine up front. Despite the vast majority of attacking play in the 1st half we were unable to put on any scoreboard pressure and we headed to half time locked at 0-0 but with the Swinny players really starting to hit their straps. After a rare forward entry by the Chadstone forwards Nick found himself the victim of a blatant elbow to the head directly in front of the Umpire. However to our amazement the offender got off scot-free and Nick is sent of for remonstrating with another player. Rough Justice for Nick but another Slab in the Kitty. After a long period of attack from Chadstone they finally scored the equaliser off the 3rd shot from a Penalty Corner, to make it 1-1 with 10 minutes to go. Swinburne found another gear and after some tough defence in our own half, we pushed forward to pepper their goal with shots for the last 5 minutes, Steve’s shot just going over the At the start of the 2nd half crossbar and various others just not finding their way over it seemed that every the line. Chadstone Player was screaming about how they Final score 1-1, on another day it could have been 6-1 but would slot an early goal and them’s the breaks. Without a doubt our best game this take this game away from season against quality opposition. Best players included us, but it was not to be, Rowan Hardman, Nick Leahy and Paul Smart and about 9 with some simple passing others too numerous to mention here. putting Rowan into space Overall a hard-fought bruising affair, with the Swinny fellas and on his way to the circle. really putting their bodies on the line for the team. Now if we Rowan duly delivered for can figure out some way of keeping Colin at work on the his 2nd goal of the season weekends we should play finals. That’s 2 wins and a draw and Swinny was 1-0 within while you’ve been away Col. the first minute. Spirits high after a dream start Swinburne pressed hard on the Chadstone defence playing 20 mins of high quality Hockey, but confusion reigned in the attacking circle with many chances going begging. Contributions welcome! I will be trying to ask a difference person each week from each of the teams to put together a match report. If you would like to freely volunteer a match report that would be fantastic! With typical Swinburne started strongly with an early attack within the opening aplomb, he slotted it! The Swinburne crowd burst into cheers! seconds of the game. But it was not to last, and Swinburne’s GAME ON! defence soon found themselves under almost constant attack from Brunswick. Cam Degraaf played an excellent game at full back Again Marcellin took the ball from the half. Quickly we had under tough conditions. But despite of this, and the solid possesion again only to find through some luck and good work, resistance from Adrian and Dieter, Brunswick led 4 nil at half time. Marcellin found themselves in the D and past our keeper, well against the tide of play. The clock was ticking. The order was The second half saw more attack from Swinburne than in we had passed around "Get a short!". We dropped a half off our back line seen in the first. (Authors note: Marcellin have 4 red cards for that team as of Round 5 vs Marcellin round 5..) Our first short corner was not looking likely, only to find Author: Jason Clarke that they had broken. Our second was looking likely but only With the sun setting over the goals a slightly short swinburne team resulted in another short. took the field, with Mario and Damo to take the field after a 15 minute siesta. Lining up against a very short Marcellin we looked confident. This was soon to change as the explosive speed of the Marcellin team pushed our defense hard very quickly. Due to the amount of speed the Marcellin team was able to put on we soon looked up at the score board at the 10 minute mark and saw we were down 3-0. Our inners, halves and backs redoubled their efforts and stymied the Marcellin attack. Suddenly though, we found ourselves pushing up their foward line, we were cutting passes off and shutting down players. The difference? Damo and Mario blunted their attack. Soon we found ourselves pushing their halves, then their backs and steadily putting more heat on the keeper who up until the 20 minute mark, hadn't had any work. After a short period of time we found that the offensive D was incredibly packed and scoring opportunities were very limited. We worked a couple of short corners and with Phil W pushing out and Bubbles (Braden B) trapping, goals were sure to come. One did after a mad scrable the keeper was found to have stood up too long and a goal went in under them. Score one me! Half time came and we found that our spirits were fine, our will still strong. We were deterimed to push and push we did. Our passing was picking up, our tackles and calling were clearly called and it was showing, we had Marcellin on the back foot. Early into the second half we found we had more short corners. The simple trap, bunt and hit wasn't working, their first runner was too quick. Bubbles faked off to the right, passed in and I was able to glimpse the keeper flat on the group. A slap of the ball produced a slow and agonising arc that cleared the keeper and THUNKED into the backboard. Score two me! It seemed at this point that Marcellin had dropped their forward line, along with their shoulders, to the backs and tried to shut us down. In hindsight this was our best opportunity as we seemed to be lucky with our corners. Sure enough, with fantastic calling from the likes of Mario, Phil, Cam, Bushy and an injured TJ we Then the whistle went! Our third short corner broke down and Marcellin were unhappy about the award of another short corner. Our fourth was textbook. The pushout was smooth, sharp and accurate, the ball stopped 2 blades of grass outside, travelled over the line again by 2 blades of grass. I hit it, I watched it travel towards the far post. Keepers boot was moving towards, then past! OFF THE BOOT! IN! DRAW! WHISTLE! MANLY LOVE ON THE TOP OF THE D! The 2nds played the game of our season sofar, and the scoreline sure doesn't show it. P.S. Score hattricks and expect to be asked to write the match report. Round 6 vs LaTrobe Author: Justin Bush Round six saw Swinburne Hockey Men’s 2 North take on the boys from Latrobe Uni - and what a game it was! Swinburne entered the Hawthorn hockey arena full of confidence after hearing that they were two men up on the opposition. It wasn’t long though into the first half when Swinburne realised that Latrobe Uni weren’t going down without a fight. Some excellent defence work by Swinburne kept the ball out of the opposition’s attacking 50 and some equally good attacking by Swinburne’s forward line made sure Latrobe felt the pressure. About halfway through the first half (some would call that a quarter of the way), disaster struck when Latrobe managed to penetrate our back line and pocket their first goal. This was shortly followed by one massive roar emanating from one of Latrobe’s players. Thankfully the Swinburne Sideline Support Crew (SSSC for short) were on the ball and retaliated with a chant of “No Garry, no!” aimed at the sweatband wearing player. Swinburne played out the rest of the first half with many close shots on goal 6 Match Reports (cont’d) (Continued from page 6) but to no avail. After some priceless advice from coach Jesse (and Jason) at half time, Swinburne leapt from the change room benches and returned to the field for the second half, full of vigour. As the Men’s 2 North tend to do, we played a much tighter second half. A touch of drama was added to the mix when a Latrobe player went down at the hand of one his own team members. Like two boxers in a clinch, neither team seemed able to score and before long the final whistle was blown. All in all, a good game with the final score: Latrobe Uni – 1, Swinburne – 0. Round 7 vs Doncaster Author: Damien Cockfield The game started out in the oppositions favour when only 10 of us could take the field. Thankfully, an injured Bron offered to come on the field and take out a player for us by molestering him profusely. The game started out well, with many a close contest, which managed to last for the whole game. The scoreboard was empty for quite a while early in, despite Doncasters best efforts, thanks to some brilliant saves from Adrian and great work by all players in getting back and defending. Doncaster struck first with a flicked in goal off a short corner. Thankfully due to some good passage of play and a nice tap in by TJ we were able to level the scores. We almost managed to get on top of Doncaster with Bron coming out after leaving her defender in her wake and pounding the ball into the goalies helmet, and then a very near miss by Huan later on. Everyone played well throughout the game, with the wings Huon and Jason doing excellent work up forward, and Rowan and TJ doing great work as inners feeding the ball forward with their pace and skills then always making the run back to help defend. Everyone helped move the ball forward, even with full backs Dieter and Matt getting up into the forward D once or twice after some good passages of play. The backline worked well together as one strong wall consisting of Reece, Johnny, Damian as first line, and Matt and Dieter doing excellent work down back. Adrian played his best game of the year in the goals, stopping many of the Doncaster strong hits at goal. Unfortunately due to some bad luck on our part, Doncaster managed to squeeze through a goal right before the end to give them a 2-1 lead, which despite some good last effort attempts we couldn’t get back. Special thanks to Mario for umpiring, Bron for helping us make up the numbers even though she was injured. Matt for playing a second game to help us out, and Johnny the temp, for gracing us with his presence. A win is definitely not far away for us. Men’s Metro 3 South Round 4 vs Collegians-X There was one embarrassing moment when we all thought Ed was trying to chat up Alex; he was actually asking the new player Michelle to smack it at him! The previous game ended, the crowed thinned, we took the field. Our hit-up was an interesting affair. We only had one ball! Cam kept hitting it way over the other side of the field. I think he was eager to be accosted by the shadowy figure lurking over by the dark bushes. Some kind soul took pity on us and a few more balls turned up. We took turns to smack it as hard as we could at Ed who calmly kicked it back to us along the ground so we might smack it at him again! Round 7 vs Chadstone Author: Mitch & Phil Redoubtable veterans Braden "Bubbles" Betley and Mitch Dovey worked tirelessly in the midfield and were rewarded in the second half with Swinburne making more determined thrusts into attack, resulting in a number of shots on goals and short corners. Cam DeGraff, playing out of the full back position ran the length of the field and scored Swinburne's only goal for the game after some gritty work getting the ball into the circle. Throwing caution to the wind, the Swinburne team played the rest of the game with lone full back Phil "Poleaxe" LeHunt and Ed the goal keeper in defence, moving Cam as a free player into the attacking mid field. Not only was the depleted defence able to hold off Chadstone for the remainder of the game, the move of the extra player into the mid field assisted in building up the Swinburne attacking plays For the second time in as many weeks, the Swinburne Metro 3 resulting in a number of goal scoring opportunities that just went South team made the trip out to the Waverley Hockey ground - this begging as well as a short corner right at the conclusion of the time to play Chadstone.
